THE SHEPHERD’S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrec-tion. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shepherd, the image put before us in today’s readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus re-veals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his “flock.” In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts as-sures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 11:1-18; Ps 42:2-3; 43:3, 4; Jn 10:11-18 Tuesday: Acts 11:19-26; Ps 87:1b-7; Jn 10:22-30 Wednesday: Acts 12:24 — 13:5a; Ps 67:2-3, 5-6, 8; Jn 12:44-50 Thursday: Acts 13:13-25; Ps 89:2-3, 21-22, 25, 27; Jn 13:16-20 Friday: Acts 13:26-33; Ps 2:6-11ab; Jn 14:1-6 Saturday: Acts 13:44-52; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 14:7-14 Sunday: Acts 14:21-27; Ps 145:8-13; Rv 21:1-5a; Jn 13:31-33a, 34-35

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — The Jews angrily reject Paul and Barnabas’ preaching. They then turn their energies to the Gentiles (Acts 13:14, 43-52).

Psalm — We are his people, the sheep of his flock (Psalm 100).

Second Reading — John envisions a great white-robed multitude standing before the throne and be-fore the Lamb. (Revelation 7:9, 14b-17).

Gospel — My sheep hear my voice; they follow me. I give them eternal life (John 10:27-30).

Pastoral Council The parish pastoral council is a leadership community of faith comprised of the pastor, parish priests, deacons, religious and lay persons. It is a reflection of the parish community and serves the entire parish community. Its leadership is marked by a spirit of collaboration and by the pastor’s positive, enthusiastic and understanding involvement in the work of the council. At baptism, each one of us is called to bring the eternal and unchanging message and mission of Jesus Christ to the people. The main purpose of the parish pastoral council is to provide direction for the parish based upon the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling in the community. The main task of the council is formulating and implementing parish policies and plans, as well as coordinating all parish activities. It is to be remembered, of course, that the parish pastoral council is accountable to the parish which it serves and to the larger Church of which it is a part. Each parish has two basic purposes:

1. To enkindle a deeper faith in the heart of its members through Word, Sacraments and Service. 2. To lead its members to participate actively in the mission of Jesus to the world. 3. To harmonize its ministries to the mission of the Catholic Church.

Your help is needed in nominating people that you think would be good in representing the parish and guiding the pastor. On a piece of paper please print the persons name and phone number and submit it in the collection basket or you may turn it in at the parish office. All names must be submitted by Next Weekend April 24, 2016. Thank you for your support.

Prayer for Vocations Send forth Your Spirit, Lord, into the hearts of Your faithful people, that we may be curious of our vocation to holiness and service to others. Grant that many of us may dedicate our selves to You through the priesthood, religious life, and lay ministries. We pray for the needs of our parish and diocese. Grant that we may always have sufficient good and holy priests and deacons, dedicated sisters and brothers, and committed lay ministers to serve our communities. We pray too for the Redemptorists, that generous men may join them to become zealous missionaries, preaching the Gospel in word, and action to the most abandoned, especially the poor. We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

Vocations to the priesthood and religious life are a priority within the Diocese of Orlando. Today, as we experience a growing populations in Central Florida, we are also experiencing an increase in vocations, partly because of the prayers of our faithful for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

I ask that you pray for an increase in vocations, pray for our seminarians as they grow in their formation. Pray for parents that they will encourage their children to consider the possibility of a vocation to religious life. Pray for children that they will discern the call of God and say yes. Lastly we pray for our priests and religious sisters & brothers as they continue to lead the people of God. I ask that you pray daily for vocations. There are many ways you can pray for vocations, such as praying the Rosary, or Chaplet of Divine Mercy, receiving Communion or participating in the celebration of the Mass with a vocations intention.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) God calls each of us to a future of love. To give ourselves as a gift to God as Jesus did when he died for us on the cross is the way to true joy. May our prayers for vocations lead those who hear the call to serve the Lord in this special way to say YES and may our prayers support them on this journey.
