Prayer for Vocations

In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the par-ish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time

after Mass for parishioners to focus their prayer on vo-cations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, religious, and consecrated per-sons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Exploring the Catechism Exploring the Catechism will meet in the McCann Center after Mass on Sunday. Topic for discus-sion will be The Holy spirit makes present the mystery of Christ. Paragraphs 1104 ff.

Help us in this year’s 24th Annual Walk for Life, Saturday , May 2nd, 2015. Let someone in the parish office know if you are willing to walk or get sponsors.

RCIA Topics For This Week! Tuesday, April 21, 2015

by IlaMae Topic: Your Spiritual Gifts and Family Life. How

do we use our spiritual gifts at work, at home, and in the com-munity? Newly baptized and fully initiated Adults in the RCIA will be discussing this topic. Other adults in the parish are welcome to join us who have an interest in learning about this topic. There is no cost and pre registration is not necessary. Just come.

O God, Giver of all good gifts:

In the beginning, you spoke — and all That is came to be.

In the fullness of time, you spoke — and your Word took on Flesh, and the Church was born from the water and blood which poured from his side.

In our time, you still speak — through the Scriptures and through the Sacraments.

In baptism, you call us to be a chosen race, a royal priest- hood, a holy nation, a people for your own possession.

You gather a Eucharistic people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.

When we sin and wander far from you, you seek us out speaking words of mercy and forgiveness through the sacrament of reconciliation.

You call us to lives of generous service, whether in the sacrament of marriage Or the sacrament of holy orders, whether as vowed religious or as single persons in the world.

Hear us, O God.

May your Holy Spirit come to rest in our hearts and set them aflame, so that we may become what we receive, Bread, broken for the life of the world, and make of our lives, and of the Diocese of Davenport, a return—gift to you.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Official prayer of the Diocese of Davenport, 2015

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

An underlying lesson from all three readings this weekend is that the Risen Christ has wiped away our sins, not only for individuals, but throughout the world and its history. The ter-rible power of sin has now been reversed and our coming to perfection through the love of God is part of the Easter ex-perience. As stewards of God’s love we are called to partici-pate in Christ’s redemptive activity. The stewardship ques-tions for us are many: How do we resist injustice at home or in the workplace? How do we confront violence in our lan-guage and attitudes? How do we bring Christ to others?

Maggie’s Story Legislation to allow physician assisted suicide has often been proposed in state legislatures. This so-called death with dig-nity is one of the ways that the value of life is diminished. If pain and burdens are intolerable at the end of life, a birth that will be “inconvenient”, or economically a burden may also be intolerable, resulting in abor-tion. “Death with dignity” helps legitimize that sentiment. The Church has produced a video on You-Tube (https://youtu.be/XJwWKDGBS5o) where you will find the per-sonal story of a cancer sufferer who has chosen to have a true death with dignity, and how she came to that life affirming choice. It is a beau-tiful summation of why the Church actively supports the life and dignity of the human per-son from birth to natural death.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. T h e D V D , Everyday Holiness, tells the inspiring story of a talented young en-g i n e e r , J o s e p h Muzquiz, whose life was transformed when he met St. Josemarie Escriva founder of Opus Dei. He was one of the first three men ordained as priests in Opus Dei. In 1949 Fr. Muzquiz was sent to start an Opus Dei apostolate first in Chicago and then in other cities in the United States. He later was sent to Canada, Japan and Switzerland. Opus Dei was founded to show how ordinary people can serve God through their everyday lives. Many of the these concepts were incorpo-rated into the documents of Vatican II on the laity. When Fr. Muncie arrived in the States, Opus Dei was not well known. He came with only a few dollars in his pocket but a love for attracting the laity to be de-fenders of their faith in their work places. The determination and clarity with which he announced the revolutionary message at-tracted many young followers. No one who sees the humility, integrity and perseverance of Fr. Joseph can not helpto be in-spired. His cause for canonization was opened in 2010 in the Archdiocese of Bos-ton. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings. Is it a sin to use things I stole by accident?

A few years ago I downloaded music from what turned out to be pirate sites. I stopped once I realized it was stealing, but I still lis-ten to the music I had already downloaded.

Am I making the sin worse? What should I do? We can’t sin unless we’re conscious we’re sinning and do it freely. Therefore, even if the action was wrong, you didn’t sin if you didn’t know it was wrong. Of course, that doesn’t apply to civil law. If you break a law and are caught by a legitimate authority, you might have to ac-cept the punishment. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, as the old saying goes. But, all that aside, there is a principle that says we shouldn’t benefit from theft, which is probably why you’re feeling guilty. It might make you feel better to wipe out the stolen recordings, reorder them, and pay the going rate. Or, donate the value of the downloads to your parish or some other worthy cause. Sometimes it’s not possible to restore the damage done by a mistaken act. In those cases, practice a virtuous act in its place. Doing volunteer work for a charitable or-ganization or running errands for a sick or elderly person are two examples. So make your donation, enjoy your music, and don’t download more music without paying for it unless it’s a le-gitimate giveaway from a reputable provider.

April 19, 2015 Third Sunday of Easter

Acts 3:13–15, 17–19 / 1 Jn 2:1–5a / Lk 24:35–48

During a particularly difficult period at one place I worked, I would come home at night and rehash con-versations and events, wondering whether the outcome would have been different if I’d said or done something else. I wonder whether the apostles asked themselves the same kinds of questions after the crucifixion. “Should we have done something differently? Could we have prevented this somehow?” Perhaps they locked the door because they were afraid they’d be put to death too. When we’re in a bad situation, sometimes all we want to do is hide. It’s a child’s response: If I don’t look at it, maybe it will go away. But the locked door was no barrier, and Jesus came and stood in their midst. Rather than ridicule their fear, he gently put it to rest: “Peace be with you.” The more Jesus talked, the more they heard, and they came to know that the peace of the Lord is not like the world’s peace.

It’s not a temporary measure that will only give way to more tur-moil. Jesus calmly and lovingly put their fears to rest. It wasn’t that the world was suddenly going to be welcoming; rather, they would be confident in the new life that was in them and in the grace Christ alone can give. Jesus does this for us as well. He walks through the locked doors of our hearts and blesses us with peace. The more we listen to Jesus’ words, the more we can understand and wit-ness to his truth. Is the Lord with you today?
