Sacred Heart Catholic Church Second Sunday in Ordinary Time –January 15, 2017 Reflection from the Pastor: Today’s Gospel speaks about Jesus’ baptism and the special mission it confers on him to fulfill God’s promise to Israel that they would be the light of the nations. Our Lord’s baptism wasn’t necessary to forgive any sins, since Our Lord is sinless. It shows Jesus’ submission to God’s Law and it prepares the way for the institution of the sacrament of baptism: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Matt 28:13).” Our Lord taught his disciples that baptism was necessary for salvation, and so the Church follows Jesus’ teaching by baptizing even infants, a practice that can be found in the Acts of the Apostles (cf. Acts 2:39, 16:15 and 16:33). Canon law governs our actions as Catholics, and it reminds parents in Canon 867, no. 1: “Parents are obliged to take care that infants are baptized in the first few weeks; as soon as possible after the birth or even before it, they are to go to the pastor to request the sacrament for their child and to be prepared properly for it.” It is a serious sin of spiritual neglect not to have one’s child baptized in the first weeks of life. Proper planning by parents and godparents ahead of the birth ensures that the very minimal requirements of the Church for preparation are met so that the baptism occurs at the proper time. Fr. Sacred Heart Catholic Church Second Sunday in Ordinary Time –January 15, 2017

Reflection from the Pastor: Today’s Gospel speaks about Jesus’ baptism and the special mission it

confers on him to fulfill God’s promise to Israel that they would be the light

of the nations. Our Lord’s baptism wasn’t necessary to forgive any sins,

since Our Lord is sinless. It shows Jesus’ submission to

God’s Law and it prepares the way for the institution of the

sacrament of baptism: “All authority in heaven and on earth

has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of

all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of

the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Matt 28:13).” Our Lord

taught his disciples that baptism was necessary for salvation,

and so the Church follows Jesus’ teaching by baptizing even infants, a

practice that can be found in the Acts of the Apostles (cf. Acts 2:39, 16:15

and 16:33). Canon law governs our actions as Catholics, and it reminds

parents in Canon 867, no. 1: “Parents are obliged to take care that infants are

baptized in the first few weeks; as soon as possible after the birth or even

before it, they are to go to the pastor to request the sacrament for their child

and to be prepared properly for it.”

It is a serious sin of spiritual neglect not to have one’s child baptized in the

first weeks of life. Proper planning by parents and godparents ahead of the

birth ensures that the very minimal requirements of the Church for

preparation are met so that the baptism occurs at the proper time.
