Newsletter
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we prepare to celebrate our school feast day on Friday I encourage you to take the time to read the above description of the feast. The message expressed will be the focus of lessons and conversations with our students on Friday.
On Friday the funeral Mass of well known and much revered former Parish Priest of our parish, Father Plunkett will be celebrated at 11am in our parish church. The students of our school will form a Guard or Honour along Lake Albert Road, as the cortege leaves for the cemetery. It will be our way of recognizing all the work that Fr Plunkett did for our school and the people of Kooringal.
Our students are back in the routine of teaching and learning at school with relationships being more settled as all have readjusted to being back together in community. Staff continue to be mindful of the needs of each learner during these times and are ensuring that there are learning breaks, opportunities for physical activity and activities that promote co-operation, connections and understanding amongst class members. If you have concerns about your son or daughter or have been impacted yourself by COVID19 please don?t hesitate to contact me for support or advice regarding services that could assist you and your family.
Don?t forget to book in for your Three Way Conversation (students Year One to Year Six) or Parent Teacher interview (students in Kindergarten) which are scheduled for after school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (week 9). Your presence at these interviews is especially important this year due to the long period of ?At Home Learning?. All teachers are looking forward to the opportunity to talk with you via a zoom meeting.

Celebrat ing t he Feast of t he Sacred Hear t ? our school feast day
Fr iday 19t h JuneOn this day, we celebrate God?s creat ive love burst ing forth into the heart of creat ion, into the heart of humanity. It is a day to reflect on the boundless love that God has for each person. In essence it speaks of the great tenderness of a God who stoops down and lifts us up when life is filled with challenges and suffering. God?s love reaches out to us, invites us, and draws us into the very heart of God where our lives are t ransformed into being the hands and feet , the gent le voice and the listening ear of Christ in the world today.
In essence the Feast of the Sacred Heart is about celebrat ing the goodness, kindness and compassion that was at the heart of Jesus? minist ry. A way to celebrate this feast would be for us to give recognit ion to the many acts of random kindness and goodness that we see around us each day. For it is in the daily act ivit ies of life that people cont inue to give witness to the compassionate face and heart of God. Compassion calls us to be a beloved Christ-like presence in our world today.
Are you willing and ready for the goodness and compassion of your life to be poured out for others, so that the divine dance of love continues?
Kindergarten 2021 interviews commenced today. It is always wonderful to meet the new families and children who will be joining our community.
I hope that you are looking after yourselves as best you can during these weeks as we slowly move towards more social interactions and opportunities.
As we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart may you know the fullness of God?s love in your life.

Metal Sphere
Many have asked about the significance of the metal sphere at the front entrance to the school.
The metal sphere captures the life and focus of Nano Nagle, an Irish woman who committed her life to raising up and educating the poor. To support her work she gathered other women around her and they became known as the Presentation Sisters who began our school in 1959. Founded on the charism of Nano Nagle and the Presentation Sisters Sacred Heart continues to enable every child to become the best they can and provides every opportunity to enable that to happen. Please come and look at the story on the sphere.

3-Way Conversat ions
Our teachers have been busily preparing for their 3-way interviews on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
of next week.
During these interviews the class teacher will be able to discuss the progress your child has made from
their point of view at school during the first semester, regardless of the amount of time your child may
have been away from school during Covid. It is important to remember that regular classes were
interrupted during week 9 and 10 of Term 1 and Weeks 1 - 4 in Term 2, before regular classes resumed in
Week 5. While regular class time was interrupted, those working from home were able to provide their
teacher with valuable information about their understanding of topics, their work habits, and their ability
to overcome adversity. For those students who worked largely from home during this time, your role as
the parent and supervisor of this home learning will be an integral part of these interviews, as will be your
insights you gained from supervising your child at home, as it will form a more holistic interview process.
The third part of the interview will be the students. They have already completed a reflection sheet at
school about their thoughts on English, Maths, Religion, and life at school in general, and the way they will
be able to articulate their thoughts as their contribution to the interview will be highly valued.
All parents who register a time for their interview will receive an email from their child?s teacher confirming
the day, time and the link you will need to join the Zoom meeting. It is important that when you join the
link you are patient to be admitted to the session, as the teacher may still be with another conversation,
and will need to end that one before admitting you for your 3-way conversation.
Please be aware that a physical report of this meeting will be sent home in Week 10.
If you have any questions please contact your child?s teacher.
All the best

Refugee Week 2020: Celebrating the Year of Welcome
This year?s Refugee Week theme, ?Celebrating the Year of Welcome?, invites people to consider how they might be
more open and receptive to listening to refugees and asylum seekers and welcoming them into our communities.
Prayer
Lord, No one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.
In your kindness watch over refugees and asylum seekers,
those separated from their loved ones, those who are lost, and those who have been exiled from their homes.
Bring them safely to the place where they long to be, and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and
those in need.
Our Year Six students have been looking at the plight of refugees within both their Religion and English work. They
have used the novel Boy Overboard as well as their interviews with Fr. Paddy Sykes and Mr Glen White about their
experiences in Afghanistan to gain an understanding of the desperate situations people face when they choose to
flee their country.
Click on the names of the stories below to see a sample of their stories which illustrate why we should always
remember to be open and receptive to listening to refugees and welcoming them into our communities.

Bapt ism
In Year 4, as part of our preparation for the Sacrament of Eucharist,
we have been learning about the Rite of Baptism as one of the
sacraments of initiation of the church. We were fortunate enough to
celebrate with Trinity Cabot when she was baptised on Monday at
Sacred Heart, Kooringal.

TRIBUTE TO FR. PLUNKETTFr. Plunkett much loved Parish Priest of Sacred Heart 1976-2007 died recently.
Fr. Plunkett was loved by everyone, how often we have heard people say proudly, "Fr. Plunkett married us" or "Fr. Plunkett baptised my children".
Fr. Plunkett through his leadership built an exceptionally strong parish community well ahead of its time.
He took the time to spend time with people and build relationships. He called everyone by name and knew their story.
Fr. Plunkett was responsible for the development of Mater Dei Primary and was always supportive of catholic education at Sacred Heart School and our parish.
Fr. Plunkett knew what love and service meant and through his life made a difference to people's lives.
With his work on earth complete may he now be rewarded with the fullness of life in God's presence.
Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
