Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to en-rich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Prayer for Vocations
In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for voca-tions after the Masses this week-end. Members of the parish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be
made to use time after Mass for parishioners to focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflec-tion. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.
Prayer for Vocations God our Father, our needs are great
and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.
Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their
hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,
deacons, religious and lay ministers.
May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.
Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.
Amen

RCIA Sessions Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about our Catholic faith? The Rite of Christian Initia-tion of Adults (RCIA) program exists to help those adults who are interested in learning more about or joining the Catholic Church. The RCIA process is a period of reflection,
prayer, instruction, discernment, and formation. There is no set timetable, and those who join the process are encouraged to take as much time as they need. However, on average the process takes about eight months for those who have never been baptized. Those who enter the process are expected to be-gin attending Sunday Mass, attend a weekly RCIA session, and to become increas-ingly more involved in the activities of the parish community. Interviews are now being scheduled for those interested individuals! The first session of the year will be on Tuesday, September 15th at 7 p.m. in the McCann Center. Please contact the Director of Lifelong Faith Formation, Luke Gregory, for more information at the Parish Office at 792-2050! (Sessions for Children can also be scheduled for those students of catechetical age who have missed sacraments! Call for more information!)
This Monday is Labor Day and the parish of-fices are closed. Let us be mindful of the need for good work for those of an age to work. Work is a noble thing, as is caring for and providing for one’s self and one’s fam-ily. Pray for decent jobs which can sustain a fam-
A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
St. James teaches that those who are poor in the eyes of soci-ety are the ones who have been chosen to inherit the King-dom of God. Indeed, we are saved because of our poverty; we are redeemed out of our need; not because of our material wealth or achievements that the world finds praiseworthy. St. James also suggests that we are stewards of others, especially the poor; and it is how we respond to the poor and needy that will define our relationship with the Lord. How do we respond to the less fortunate right within our own parish?
Marriage Moments "And people brought Jesus a deaf man who had a speech impediment." (Mark 7:2) Sometimes in marriage it seems like one of us is deaf or at least not listening. Other times the speaker mumbles (or so I tell my husband). Which of you is better at speaking; which at listening? Practice each other's gift.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. There have been many movies about Saint Joan of Arc and the library has a fair col-lection but our latest is very special. In it, lead-ing researchers and his-torians of the saint show her as a vibrant coura-geous, level headed young lady who loved God first and her country next. Doing the will of God gave her the strength to fight but in an honorable way. In warfare she be-lieved in praying for not only her troops but those of the enemy. She made sure all in-volved in combat were administered the sac-raments. The DVD Saint Joan of Arc: Maid of God is labeled a docudrama, but it is so well presented you think the saint is alive and talking to you. The discussions by the researchers lend credibility and accentu-ate the depth of this saint’s faith and trust in God. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings. In Spanish Bibles, why do Psalms have different numbers ?
I’ve been looking at a Spanish translation of the Bible. Why are the Psalms num-bered differently?
Among the various translations of the Bible, two numbering systems are commonly used: a Greek number-ing and a Hebrew numbering. Each system is primarily based on one of two original texts: the older Septuagint, or Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures; or the Masoretic text, a later Hebrew trans-lation. When St. Jerome translated the Bible into the Latin Vulgate, he fol-lowed the Greek Septua-gint. In Bibles using Greek numbering, certain pairs of psalms are merged into one, such as with Psalms 9 and 10 and with Psalms 114 and 115. Other psalms are divided into two psalms each, such as with Psalms 116 and 147. Hebrew-numbered Bibles, therefore, may list psalms a bit lower or higher than Greek-numbered ones. The resulting numerical difference is what you are witnessing in your Spanish Bible. Other examples of Greek-numbered Bibles would be the Douay-Rheims and those used in Eastern Orthodox churches. Many modern English Bibles, especially those used in Protestant churches, follow the Hebrew numbering. But numbers aside, most contemporary versions of the Bi-ble draw from several sources—including the Greek Sep-tuagint, Masoretic Hebrew, Latin Vulgate, and Dead Sea Scrolls—to create an accurate and effective Old Testament translation, whether in English or Spanish.

September 6, 2015 — 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 35:4–7a / Jas 2:1–5 / Mk 7:31–37
It seems odd that Jesus would tell someone he just cured to keep silent about the whole incident. If I had experienced a miraculous cure, I think my first impulse would be to tell everyone about it and how it came to be. It’s hard to keep that kind of good news to oneself. But Jesus’ reasons for asking this went beyond mere mod-esty. He did not want people to follow him simply because of what he did. There were prophets and preachers at that time who called attention to God and appeared to cure those who were ill. They cast out demons and preached their understanding of the truth. But Jesus wasn’t like any other person. He wanted people to look within themselves and believe in him because of who he was: Emmanuel, God with us. If we believe in Jesus only because we have seen a miracle, then our faith is not rooted in a deep convic-
tion of heart and mind. The first time something bad happens, our faith will waver. If we believe only because someone else told us to, then when that person exits our lives, our faith may stop. But if we have had a personal encounter with Christ mediated through sacraments, or in prayer, or through another person and have come to believe in Christ as the Son of God, then our faith will grow. It will see us through rocky time and brighten the rest of our days. We will be like someone whose eyes and ears have been opened, because we will see Christ present in the world and hear his voice calling to us to come and follow him.
