Prayer for Vocations
In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the par-ish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after Mass for parishioners to
focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflec-tion. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.
Prayer for Vocations God our Father, our needs are great
and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.
Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their
hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,
deacons, religious and lay ministers.
May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Infant Baptism Preparation The first step for parents wishing to have an infant child baptized at Sacred Heart is to attend a Bap-tism prep session. At the session parents discuss the responsibility involved in
having a child baptized and share ideas on living out their commitment to raise their children in the Catholic faith. A Baptism Preparation Ses-sion will be held this Thursday, June 11th at 6:30 p.m. in McCann Center. Please call the office to indicate that you will be attending.

Cemetery Collection
Every year at this time—around Memorial Day—there is an appeal made to the parish on behalf of Sacred Heart Cemetery. Every time a cemetery plot is sold some of the income from that sale is put aside for Perpetual Care. You can imagine that the Perpetual Care money collected decades ago would not be near adequate for current day expenses of maintenance for the cemetery, let alone for improvements. The burial of the dead is a pious and holy thing, as is the care of their buried remains. The cemetery is a holy and sacred place, as it claims our bodies until the Resurrection. Your generous response to the appeal for Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery will be greatly appreciated.
Next week, our parish will take up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection com-municates the Gospel through Catholic social media ac-tivities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection.
My Dearest Sacred Heart Parish Community, It is with great joy to announce that I have ac-cepted a position to serve with NET Ministries for the 2015-2016 year. NET Ministries is a relational youth ministry where 150 young adult Catholics share the Gos-pel with over 70,000 middle and high school students. These NET ministers split into teams and travel the country while giving retreats. These teams have visited our own parish in recent years and have an impact on our local parish in addition to thousands of parishes across the country. In order for me to serve, I must secure 5,000 dollars in partnership funds. These tax deductible donations can be given in monthly pledges or one time gifts. I would be honored if you and your family would consider partnering with me. Above all, I ask for your unceasing prayers for all of the NET ministers and the youth we will impact next year. period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. This film tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his brothers and sis-ters in the movement prompted change that for-ever altered history. A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
Today’s Gospel gives St. Mark’s account of Jesus gathering his disciples for a last supper, revealing to them a new cove-nant established through his own sacrificial blood. Every time we participate in the Eucharist, we make a pledge to re-new and deepen our participation in Christ’s covenant in practical ways. For the steward, that means making daily, per-sonal sacrifices to strengthen this covenant relationship such as deepening our relationship with the Lord in prayer, sup-porting our parish, and giving comfort to the poor. Now is a good time to reflect on what we can do to strengthen our covenant with the Lord and our community in practical ways.

St. Anthony of Padua is one of the most beloved and admired saints in the church. Because
he was a prolific preacher and witness to the Gospel in his personal life, he is known as a great stew-
ardship saint.
St. Anthony was born on the Feast of the Assumption in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 to a
walthy and educated family of the Portuguese nobility. He entered the Augustinian religious com-
munity at an early age where he devoted himself to the study of sacred scripture and Latin classics.
He joined the Franciscan Order when he was 26 years old and traveled tirelessly to preach
what it meat to live according to the Gospel. He is believed to have made as many as 400 trips to
towns in both northern Italy and southern France.
St. Anthony knew that preaching was not enough to help people understand how to live
according to the Gospel. He believed he had to give witness to the Gospel by the way he lived his
personal life. He adopted and maintained a simple lifestyle consistent with what he believed the
Gospel was calling him to.
St. Anthony died in Padua, Italy, on June 13, 1231 at the age of 36. He was proclaimed a
saint less than one year after his death. So simple, yet compelling and inspiring was St. Anthony’s teaching of the Catholic faith
that he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946.
Best known for his patronage of seekers of lost items, St. Anthony is commonly referred to today as the “finder of lost
articles.” Few people know that he is the patron of many other causes including the poor and those who travel. His feast day is
June 13.

O God, Giver of all good gifts:
In the beginning, you spoke — and all That is came to be.
In the fullness of time, you spoke — and your Word took on Flesh, and the Church was born from the water and blood which poured from his side.
In our time, you still speak — through the Scriptures and through the Sacraments.
In baptism, you call us to be a chosen race, a royal priest- hood, a holy nation, a people for your own possession.
You gather a Eucharistic people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.
When we sin and wander far from you, you seek us out speaking words of mercy and forgiveness through the sacrament of reconciliation.
You call us to lives of generous service, whether in the sacrament of marriage Or the sacrament of holy orders, whether as vowed religious or as single persons in the world.
Hear us, O God.
May your Holy Spirit come to rest in our hearts and set them aflame, so that we may become what we receive, Bread, broken for the life of the world, and make of our lives, and of the Diocese of Davenport, a return—gift to you.

What should I do if see a piece of host on the floor? What do I do if I drop the host? Sometimes after holy Communion is given out, I see pieces of the consecrated host on the floor. Is it OK to eat them? And what
about receiving holy Communion with chewing gum in one’s mouth?
Eating the pieces is one option. However, it
might be hard to distinguish between pieces of a host,
lint, or dust. So a better option is to talk to your pastor. If he thinks there is an issue, then he could have someone take the particles into the sacristy and put them in a container of water, allowing them to dissolve and then wash them down the sacrarium, a sink that goes directly into the ground. If he does not think there is an issue, be obedient to his decision. That brings us to your second question. It is not respectful to chew gum when one is receiving holy Com-munion. Receiving holy Communion de-mands our respect and reverence. It re-quires our fullest attention. If a person were about to eat a fine meal with gum in his mouth, the cook would be insulted. In the same way, how much more important and “delicious” is the sweetness of the Lord (Psalm 34:8)?

The DVD, Father Placido Cortese The Courage of Si-lence tells the story of a 37 year old Fran-ciscan monk from Padua,Italy. During the second world war thanks to a strong network of friends, and at the request to the Vatican, he managed to save hundreds of Jews, Slovenian, Croatian and American prisoners. As editor of the publication, Messenger of Saint Anthony he gathered a network of persons who could secretly take much needed personal supplies and information to these prisoners. On Octo-ber 8, 1944, he was picked up by the Nazi Gustapo as he exited the Basilica of St. An-tonio never to be seen again in Padua. Through extraordinary and direct evidence we now know he was tortured and died in Trieste never having revealed the names of his collaborators. A beautiful example of a priest who quietly but profoundly like Christ gave his life for others. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday mornings. I used to dream about the kind of house I would live in when I grew up. I wanted gracious, rooms, a large kitchen, a family room and—for reasons passing understanding—I wanted a stream running through the house with a waterfall somewhere in it. The house I actually live in was more than 100 years old when we bought it. It needed a boiler, a roof, and a new bathroom within the first year. The rooms were small; the kitchen had no drawers. There were no closets on the first floor. But it was ours and we raised our family in it. The smallness of the house did not seem to matter to our children’s school friends who regularly visited, knew they could call us if there was an emergency, and could count on a full bowl of fruit salad (strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, and grapes) in the refrigerator. It would have been easy to have complained about the difference between the dream and the reality. My husband and I might have argued about get-ting a bigger home. But we realized that “home” was not about the build-ing; it was—and is—about the community and relationships inside.
Had the love not been there, we might have even become divided over the flaws. I like to think that our marriage and family were blessed with the grace to see what was important. I know that in a world of poverty, we were privileged. But I believe that having each other and sharing our faith was our strength and our founda-tion, and would have been even if we had lost everything.
