CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS

BAPTISM: Communal celebrations of Baptism take place on the first and third Sundays at 2:00 PM. To arrange a Bap-tism, please call the Rectory. A Baptismal Instruction Session is required before the Baptism. Because Godparents play an im-portant role in the child’s Christian life and education, Godpar-ents must be practicing Catholics who have been confirmed, are at least 14 years of age and, if married, must be in a mar-riage recognized by the Catholic Church. If there is a question about the suitability of someone to be a Godparent, please call the Rectory before asking the person to be a Godparent.

RECONCILIATION: The Sacrament of Penance takes place on Saturdays and on the day before First Fridays from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. At other times, the person should make the request directly to a priest.

MARRIAGE: Engaged couples should contact the Rectory at least six months in advance. Diocesan regulations require a marriage preparation program for all couples.

MINISTRY TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: If a parishion-er is in the hospital or homebound, please contact the Rectory. Arrangements can be made for the person to receive the Sac-rament of the Anointing of the Sick. Also, Holy Communion can be brought to our homebound parishioners.

Heaven

Heaven is at present out of sight, but in due time, as snow melts and discovers what it lay upon,

so will this visible creation fade away before those greater splendors which are behind it.

RCIA Announcement

As we journey through the Lenten season, our catechu-men, Priscilla Bellamy, and our candidate, Catherine Langham, begin their final preparation for the reception of the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. A part of this prep-aration has already been completed. On Saturday even-ing, February 21, at the 5:00 PM Mass, our catechumen and candidate participated in the Rite of Sending. Our catechumen as one of hundreds throughout the Archdio-cese sent to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on February 22 to participate in the Rite of Election officiated by Cardinal Dolan. These catechumens have elected to become full members of the Catholic Church.

Our candidate, along with the candidates from the upper counties, was sent to St. Kateri Tekakwitha on March 1 to Bishop Dominick Lagonegro for the Rite of Calling to continuing Conversion. This Rite reminds her that she has been chosen by God to receive the special sacra-mental graces for which she has been preparing.

Today, and for the next two Sundays at the 12:00 PM Mass, our catechumen will participate in the Scrutinies. The Scrutinies are brief rites for self-searching and re-pentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. By the end of the Scrutinies the elect should progress in her perception of sin and her desire for salvation. The Scruti-nies help the elect come to know Christ the Redeemer who is the living water, the light of the world, and the res-urrection and the life.

The Sons of Thunder will be hosting a Fish Fry during Lent on Friday, March 27 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Fried or baked fish, French fries or baked potatoes, coleslaw, soda or bottled water for $7.50.

APOSTOLATE OF PRAYER

United each day, throughout the year, we pray for the members of our beloved clergy here in the Orange Coun-ty Vicariate:

Mar 9 Very Rev. Mario Esposito Rev. Thomas Zalewski, O.Carm Mar 10 Rev. Christopher Byrnes, O.Carm Deacon Jack Seymour Mar 11 Rev. Paul Denault, O.Carm Rev. Robert Traudt, O.Carm

Mar 12 Rev. Mark Connell Deacon William Glover Mar 13 Deceased priests and deacons Mar 14 Retired priests Mar 15 Most Rev. Dominick Lagonegro, DD

Father, in your plan of salvation, you provide shepherds for your people. Fill your Church with the spirit of courage and love. Raise up worthy ministers to your altars, ardent but gentle servants of the Gospel. To those clergy among us who have already answered your call, grant joy and perseverance in your service. We pray in the name of Jesus, your Son and Eternal High priest. Amen

THE PATH TO FREEDOM Most of us, if we were asked “Does the phrase ‘the Ten Commandments’ appear in the Bible?” would likely get it wrong, because the answer is “no.” “The Ten Com-mandments” is a postbiblical, phrase that developed along with an image of God as police officer that is not found in today’s passage from Exodus. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God’s law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God’s path to freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God’s freedom through Christ. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Participating in Lent, we are engaging in patterns that have endured across the centuries. From very early times, we have the sense of accompanying the elect on their journey to the font. From as long ago as the fourth century, we receive Lent as forty days to shake the dust from our spirituality and reorder our conduct. Then, fast-ing was not seen as a strict duty, yet it seems it was wide-ly observed. Think of the rules of politeness and courtesy that everyone agrees on. Fasting was also seen as a so-cial duty, since food was in short supply as winter wore on, and the weak and the sick had the first claim on what remained on hand. As a boost to the fasting of the body, the church de-veloped a richer spiritual fare, including celebration of the Eucharist every day. This practice began in Rome by the sixth century. Weekday Mass was only at designated “stations.” The pope would arrive on horseback at the sta-tional church. In those days, although the catechumenate was already in eclipse, there were prebaptismal activi-ties at the stational Masses: the giving of the Lord’s Pray-er, prayers for the godparents, and constant references to baptism. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
