Second Collection January 28, 2018—Seminarians
This special collection for seminarians is used to support the formation of seminarians as they discern their
vocation to the priesthood. Preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Orders is a nine year process. The full cost of a
seminary tuition, insurance and books exceeds $400,000 during the nine year formation period.
Your support ensures that our seminarians receive adequate tuition assistance.
On Friday, January 12, 2018, the faculties of
Sacred Heart School and Burns Science and Technology played volleyball on a friendly match at Sacred Gym. Both schools have been working together in promoting academic excellence and
healthy sports competition.
Sacred Heart faculty won 25-11 .
Sacred Heart School Boys Varsity
Boys Varsity Basketball got off to a great start when they won their first game against
Saint Brendan on Saturday, January 13th at the new St. Peter’s Gym.

Having Fun at Religious Education
Mrs. Bilodeau made “Kente Cloth Stoles” with some of the younger members of the group on Sunday’s Religious Education. Based on the reading from the Book of Samuel, the lesson was about listening to God and what He wanted us to be. Kente is a special cloth from Africa and symbolizes things about the person who wears it. The patterns are made using geometric shapes and represent life, innocence, growth, unity, etc. Their teachers will be joining them next Sunday.
Mrs. Sylvia McCormick is on her third series of the Creed with her third graders. They had been studying the meaning of the profession of our faith. Way to go Team Sylvia!
Mrs. Carol Stawicki, our 4 & 5 grade teacher and our RE Team Leader is having fun with her students learning about the sacraments. Her instruction is loaded with technology that makes learning about the faith interesting. Thank you Team Carol!
Ms. Christy Bartholomew’s middle school class studies Scripture and prepares our 8th grade candidates for their reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Thank you Team Christy!

Family Ministry—We had 33 families join us.
Many are very excited for this opportunity to have a better understanding of the Bible and to deepen their faith and become more engaged in our parish.

Traveling Mother of Divine Mercy
Home Visitation
The statue of the Pilgrim Virgin together with the image of the Divine Mercy were taken to the home of the Dichoso family from the home of the Calla family the day after Christmas. In addition to praying the rosary, two images of the Divine Mercy were blessed and enthroned as King of Home and Family, of the Dichoso family and the Calla family by Fr. Aldrin Nunez, Cs.S.R., the Ministry’s Spiritual Director. If you want to schedule a Pilgrim Virgin home visitation and a Divine Mercy enthronement at your home, please call 386-848-1787.

Day of Prayer for The Legal Protection of Unborn Children

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through
special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from
the heart of every believer.

As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting
and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Call your local diocese or
parish to find out what events might be taking place in your area.
CROSSING FROM “SAYING TO DOING”
There are many ways we seek health-you might say wellness is the new religion! Wellness encompasses many areas of fitness, i.e., more than a change of meditation or a new exercise class, It requires taking charge of managing your life and health. Notice that I do not say “control”-that is more difficult than “manage”.
Wellness is for optimists just as January resolutions are.
Promise yourself NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
Use wellness as a guiding principle. Ambition is a principle. Take heart… the Arthritis Association states low impact exercise can reduce pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the U.S. 12.4 million adults are affected by OA. 10% of men and 13% of women older than 60 have OA in the knee. Only 30 minutes 5 days a week is the recommended amount of moderate low impact exercise. We have chair exercise Tuesday and Thursday at 9am at Sacred Heart. This is a HUGE free advantage, close to home and great company. It is proven that moving too little might cause your cells to age faster. There are more than 650 muscles in the body including the heart (skeletal muscle is different from cardiac muscle, but muscles they are). We lose more muscle mass starting at age 50. Little changes count! Stand hourly if you sit for long periods. Take a short walk to the front sidewalk twice a day. It takes 1 1/2 hours to walk off 2 slices of pizza! Added to movement are nutrition and sleep which aid in your quest. Small changes make an impact So try an apple for the candy bar. If a nap is impossible in work schedule, go to bed 1/2 hour earlier.
But much needed is the ability to endure hard work and heartbreak. Crossing from saying and doing is not always easy. To truly find a sense of wellness and Confidence, look into your faith and yourself. Look into the mirror to reveal results of new moves. Try to feel calm, connected to the Lord and be happy. It is your right , everyday, every month, every year.
I share with you that I practice what I preach. I go to the Gym 6 days a week. Happy 2018 too.

St. Gerard's Memorial Brick Program
We are excited to offer the opportunity for you to have an engraved brick embedded in front of our Holy Family statue on the path to St. Gerard's. Many use the engraved bricks to memorialize a loved one. This program is being run by the St. Vincent de Paul Conference.

ALUMINUM POP TAB COLLECTION
Thanks to all of you who have saved and donated your POP TAB’s for the 2017 – 2018 collection period, which ends February 28th. We are heading for another banner year. We’re in somewhat of a dull season right now, the holidays are over and the picnic season and outdoor activities are still down the road, but there’s more sports on TV than we can shake a stick at. That means there’ll be
plenty of great foods to enjoy, that will need a tasty libation to wash them down with. So, if the libation of your choice has a POP TAB, please save it for the Ronald McDonald Houses. Thank you. See picture of last year’s bounty in the vestibule of St. Gerard.

SNAPSHOT OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL ACTIVITIES
During October-December 2017, around 130 volunteers drove 4857 miles and joyfully spent 1353 hours in service to our needy neighbors.
Receipts totaled $21,939 of which $15,977 were from begging.
Expenses were $16,252 which included $980 operating ex-penses.
SVdP delivered groceries at a cost of $7381 to 536 households of 1376 persons, 29% of whom were children.
The conference gave 64 families utility bill assistance ($6,260), 54 families transportation help ($724), and provid-ed 33 families with medications, emergency lodging and miscellaneous services. We work closely with other agen-cies and routinely refer persons to myriad agencies which might help with specific problems.
In addition to food, the conference is able to give our ever present homeless population propane, tents, bug spray and bus passes.
Comparison to last year, same period, reveals little variance in level of expenditures and numbers of persons served.
We are only able to serve people because you are generously providing the means.
On behalf of those served, thank you for your steadfast support. The Lord hears the cry of the poor and we are
His instruments.
