July is Cemetery Month! July is the traditional month in which we take up money for Calvary Cemetery. The money goes for any upkeep or repairs necessary, including mow-ing! Those who subscribe to church envelopes will have a green-edged envelope in their packet. Those who do not take church envelopes may contribute by dropping a check into the offertory clearly marked “Cemetery.” We appreciate your honoring your deceased family & friends in this way!

FRIDAY, JULY 11 FEAST OF ST. BENEDICT
What we know of this saint comes from the writings of Pope Gregory I, who says that St. Benedict (480-547 ?) was born into a noble Ro-man family, but became sickened by the debauchery of his times. He fled to the wilder-ness, founding twelve monastic communities near Subiaco, Italy and later traveling to Monte Cassino. To guide these communities, the saint wrote his fa-mous “Rule.” Despite the moderation of the Rule, his desire for reform made some of the monks so angry that they attempted to poison him, whereupon he was saved by a miracle. Not only were miracles done for him, but numerous miracles were done by him, according to Pope Gregory.
Benedictines still flourish today, but are not an “order” in the strict sense of the word. They are a confederation of autonomous communities, each with its own abbot or abbess. A number of orders in addition to the Benedictines follow the Rule of St. Benedict. For this reason, he is called the “Father of Western Monasticism.”
St. Benedict has a sister who is also a saint… St. Scholastica. He is the patron saint of Europe and
also of students. She is the patroness of women religious. Her Feast Day is Febru-ary 10.
St. Benedict & St. Scholastica, Pray for us!
