COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD

With Sympathy 17The Southern Cross 17

From the Acting PrincipalDear members of the Sacred Heart College community

Welcome to Term 3! I trust our students have returned to classes reinvigorated by the break and ready committed to working towards the goals they set themselves at the start of the year. I take this opportunity to provide an update with regard to the Staff Professional Learning Week, held in Week 10 of Term 2.

In addition to the Mid-Year Exams being undertaken by our Year 12 students, staff across three campuses came together on a collective learning journey that covered the following themes:

• Positive Psychology - Dr Suzy Green from the Positivity Institute (www.thepositivityinstitute.com.au) and her team led staff on a three-day process looking at wellbeing, coaching, character strengths and growth mindsets (to name just parts of the program).

• Visible Learning - Staff from all three campuses participated in the next phase of the Visible Learning process, as we worked to better define the learner characteristics we desire for the young people entrusted to our care. The day was titled “Evidence into Action: Day 2” and relied on an analysis of data collected across the College, with regards to learning, students identifying their learning outcomes and their success criteria.

As previously communicated to families, Positive Psychology will underpin the Pastoral Care of Champagnat Campus from 2019, while Visible Learning will guide our planning, programming and assessment. There is of course much work still to be done in the space, but throughout 2018 and most importantly, during Week 10 of Term 2, great progress has been made!

In addition to the work on Visible Learning, and indeed the setting and marking of Mid-Year Exams, staff from the Senior School spent time in Learning Areas, moderating samples of work, setting upcoming assessment tasks, and writing curriculum. They also spent a day with Deb Black from the centre for Restorative Justice, focusing on a restorative approach to addressing matters of conflict. This learning also ensures a continued and more seamless approach to conflict resolution will exist across campuses, into the future.

62nd Kilmore Exchange – can you help? From Friday 17 until Sunday 19 August, the College is proud to be hosting the 62nd Annual Kilmore Exchange, an event steeped in great history and imbued with the Marist spirit. Participants will compete against our Marist family from Assumption College, Kilmore in events including Soccer, Drama, Dance, Music, Basketball, Hockey, Netball and Football. Please click here for the program.

Based on the Marist characteristic of Family Spirit, a key element of the Kilmore Exchange is the billeting of 120 students from Kilmore, into the homes of Sacred Heart students and their families for two nights. As it stands and with little time remaining, we are still seeking a significant number of families willing to billet a student for the weekend.

If you are in a position to support this significant event, I’d ask that you please contact Luke Hildyard at the College via [email protected].

From the Head of Champagnat CampusA warm welcome return to all families as we enter the new Semester. I trust that learners enjoyed the break and are feeling refreshed and energised for the term ahead.

Professional Learning WeekAt the end of last term, staff gathered for a week of professional learning. The focus was on Positive Education and Visible Learning which was facilitated by the Positivity Institute and Corwin. Over the course of the week, staff explored the science and practice of Positive Psychology and its application in education. In addition, we looked at the importance of lesson intentions, success criteria and learner characteristics. Staff embraced the opportunity to explore research and there was an energy that filled the room as teachers discussed data and shared ideas and new strategies that they will implement for the term ahead. I continue to be grateful for the work of our teachers and acknowledge their commitment to learning.

Academic AssemblyEarlier this week we gathered as a Marymount community to acknowledge students who excelled in their learning during Semester 1. Students recognised at this celebration have shown a deep commitment to their studies. They are focussed, have spent time completing homework tasks, questioning, clarifying their thinking with teachers and have meticulously edited and refined their work before submitting assessments of the highest standard. The Academic Assembly was a proud moment at Marymount where hard work, effort and success were acknowledged and celebrated for Semester 1.

From the Assistant to the Principal - Champagnat ProjectAs we begin Semester 2, I share a few staffing changes and appointments and warmly welcome the following staff to the Middle School for Term 3:

• Alana Kunowicz to the Year 7 Team and Visual Arts Department, replacing Emma Basey who is preparing for the arrival of their first child.

• Emmalee Learning, who is replacing John Sladic for the first five weeks of Term 3.

• Lydia D’Ambrosio will be providing Italian lessons for the first few weeks, covering classes of Deb Skewes and Domenica Caruso.

• Maureen Watts to our front office team. Maureen will be on Reception on Monday and Tuesday’s for the remainder of the year.

• Meagan Koslowski will head off in a few weeks to also prepare for the arrival of their first child. I congratulate Brett Leikas who will take up the position of Year 9 Leader of Learning and Teaching in Meagan’s absence.

Walk a Mile in My BootsThis coming Friday, both students and staff at the Middle School will join together to participate in the annual Walk a Mile in My Boots to raise awareness and funds for the Hutt Street Centre. Following a short assembly to launch the walk, we will walk two laps of the school – replicating the mile long walk which will occur in Adelaide on Friday 10 August. Students and staff are asked to bring a donation in to support the great work that the Hutt Street Centre does and to support those living on the streets this winter. I thank you in anticipation of your generous support.

Yoga - Round 2Late in Term 2 saw the much-anticipated second instalment of yoga and Mindful Movement at the Middle School. Over 60 boys arrived for the before-school session and enjoyed some of their favourite poses including Warrior and Downward Dog. All boys once again experienced numerous benefits and we will be sure to continue these sessions in Term 3.

Thanks go to Alex from MissFit Movement, as well as the staff who arrived early to provide supervision and expert demonstrations. Thanks also to the parents and families for supporting this activity by dropping the boys off before 8.00am!

SENIOR SCHOOL

From the Head of Senior SchoolWelcome back to Term 3!

Parents & Friends AssociationThe P&F is a friendly, easy-going group of mothers, fathers, friends and grandparents with one major thing in common - they all have a child/grandchild/family friend attending the Senior School. All are welcome to be a part of the P&F and they are always seeking new members to bring along different ideas and a fresh approach. The P&F is not a traditional ‘primary school’ P&F - they understand that everyone is busy and time-poor, so input by members is minimal. If attending group meetings is not your thing, you can simply add your name to the volunteer list and assist at events where possible. Your valuable time and generosity, no matter how much or how little, will always be greatly appreciated.

The primary focus of the P&F is to organise social get-togethers with parents, grandparents and friends. Occasionally the group organises fund-raising activities such as a movie night or shopping night. Activities include:

• Term 1 Welcome Drinks• Term 2 Mother’s Day Mass• Term 3 Assumption College Kilmore Exchange (when SHC hosts) - provide assistance at various weekend activities• Term 3 Parents Farewell Drinks

The P&F meets once per term (usually in The Parlour) for an hour. For further information, please contact Ingrid McKay (Chairperson) [email protected].

Marist MissionSpecial thanks to the students and families who supported the Marist Immersions movie night fundraiser on July 27 at Event Cinemas, Marion. The evening was very well attended and important funds were raised for Marist communities in India, Sri Lanka, Fiji and the Philippines. We also thank our community for their generous donations of clothing and bedding in support of St Vincent de Paul Society Winter Appeal.

On Friday 10 August, student leaders from the Senior School will accompany students from Marymount and the Middle School to Walk a Mile in My Boots. The Hutt Street Centre initiative seeks to raise awareness for those who are homeless and marginalised in the city of Adelaide.

On Wednesday 15 August, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a whole campus mass in the McAteer Centre. We will also be farewelling Monsignor Ian Dempsey who retires as the Brighton Parish Priest at the end of August.

We look forward to seeing Grandfathers, Fathers, Uncles and Brothers at our Father’s Day Mass in the Chapel at 9.00am on Wednesday 22 August. Please see the email invitation that was distributed by James Gill, Director of Marist Mission for RSVP information.

Subject Selections for 2019Subject selections for 2019 commence this week with meetings for Year 10 students conducted on Tuesday 31 July and an information evening held for their parents on Wednesday 1 August. Year 11 students and their families have their meetings next week. A reminder that the Curriculum Handbook 2019 is not available in printed format, but can be accessed via www.shc.sa.edu.au/senior/curriculum.

Academic AssemblyCongratulations to the following students who were presented with Academic Excellence Awards for their studies in Semester 1. These students achieved 6 A’s or 5 A’s in their Year 10 or 11 subjects for Semester 1. We will also present certificates to Year 12 students who achieved 5 A’s or 4 A’s in their subjects in the 3rd Progress Report of this year - students who achieved a Credit, Distinction or High Distinction in their University subject are also considered to have achieved an A.

Stage 2 Trial ExamsThese exams were held in the week commencing 2 July. Students were provided with the opportunity to experience exam conditions that replicated the final exams as much as possible. Invigilators were employed to monitor students during their exams and reported that the students’ level of concentration and application to their assessment was impressive. Well done to all students involved in trial exam week!

There are two bursaries available for female students and two bursaries available for male students. They include $1,000 off the students’ school fees, together with a gift of $500 to each student. Students have been emailed an application form, but if you wish to download one, please click here. Applications close on Friday, 24 August 2018.

2018 Year 11 Sharon Jeloscek AwardFor 32 years at Sacred Heart College Senior, Sharon Jeloscek was a long-serving member of our Marist community in her roles as: Head of Learning Area - English, Head of House, Director of Curriculum, Deputy Principal and Acting Principal. Following the passing of Sharon in 2017, her son Lee Jeloscek has created an annual award in her name. This Award, will be presented at the Year 10/11 Graduation Assembly on Wednesday 14 November.

The Award is presented to a Year 11 student (about to enter Year 12) nominated by staff from Sacred Heart College. The student receiving this award will be a determined and passionate individual. This student may not be the highest achiever but is someone who demonstrates commitment to hard work and projects an understanding of their value as a unique individual.

Staff will nominate students, followed by a short-listing of applicants. These students will then submit an application folio. The application folio will be sent to Lee Jeloscek who will determine the winner of the Year 11 Sharon Jeloscek Award for 2018. The winner of the award will receive a significant bursary from Lee Jeloscek which will go towards the student’s school fees.

Staff and students will be provided with information over the course of the semester as to more pertinent details outlining the process and timelines for the various stages of the Award, which will culminate in the presentation to the winner at the end of this academic year. We look forward to celebrating the legacy of Sharon Jeloscek’s life through the launch of this inaugural award.
