MESSAGE FROM ASSOCIATE HEADTEACHER
Dear Parents/Carers In the first couple of weeks of term, it has been a real delight watching our new students and our new staff quickly settle into the life of the school. I do hope that new parents have been on the receiving end of some positive reports from the boys and girls regarding their first few weeks at
Sacred Heart. A well done to all pupils who have started attending at least one Extra Curricular Club since the start of term. We are a strong advocate of this and believe it has many
long and short term benefits. Research shows that 70% of businesses believe extra-curricular activities make job-seeking school leavers and graduates stand out from the crowd. In addition, nearly two-thirds feel that candidates with such experience tend to be more successful employees and progress more quickly in their careers. Skills such as leadership, communication and organisation are increasingly in-demand in the workplace, where new recruits are perhaps technically able but
lacking the transferrable skills that are needed to succeed. With this in mind parents, please support us. I genuinely believe that every child has a talent which should be identified and nurtured. If you are concerned about the time they are returning home please use the school diary, email or SIMs In-Touch to contact the teacher running the club, form tutor, Head of Year or reception who will relay a message if necessary.
It is important the Sacred Heart Community
understand that being a member involves excelling
in the classroom but also being very polite to
everyone. Positive behaviour and manners cost
nothing and will carry you where money won't go!
We hope this value can transcend from the
classroom and enrich society.
Have a good weekend!
Mr Lansiquot, Associate Headteacher

Sixth Formers attend Debate Mate’s ‘People’s Parliament’
Last Friday the new Year 12s showed their commitment to debating, and speaking out, by heading
to Westminster straight after school. Eight of our Debate Mate students turned up at Parliament
square to talk to members of the public and put on a show debate that focused on the issues that a
suspended parliament has made and how this has effected the running of the country and social
attitude.
As usual, the students made Sacred Heart very proud by showing off their dedication, manners and expert debate skills. Well done and thank you to the following: Holly, Emmanuel, Berenice, Blessing, Amabel, Shanaya, Nana and Khymee! The Charity Supporting Access & Diversity in the Fashion Industry
Southwark teen showcases designs at London Fashion Week with award-winning creative charity FAD
Organised by award-winning London charity FAD, and sponsored by Natwest and Asos, the 2019 Fashion Futures Final was hosted by Fashion Scout at Victoria House, Bloomsbury on Friday 13th September. The twenty finalists, aged 15-19, were the youngest designers showing at Fashion Week, showcasing designs exploring issues of sustainability and humans’ relationship with the natural world. A striking asymmetric blue dress by Southwark teenager Silvy Fernandes, 17 was featured on the catwalk. Silvy said:
The twenty London based finalists from diverse backgrounds were shortlisted from over 70 teenagers. With the support of FAD and fashion industry volunteers, the finalists worked hard to perfect their designs, rising to the challenge of using industrial machinery and mastering professional production techniques. The winners were selected by fashion industry judges including ASOS Senior Designer Morgan Allen-Oliver, sustainable fashion influencer
Claudia Ayuso, FAD trustee and Commercial Director of Shaun Leane Anju Mahbubani, Olivia Barnes, Associate Editor – Materials, Textiles and Knitwear at WGSN and Mahji Quadir of NatWest. Panel member Olivia Barnes said: ‘The students’ work clearly evidences the time and dedication they have invested in the Fashion Futures program. It is fantastic to see young designers embracing sustaina-bility as part of their practice.”
“To emphasise the natural elements, I incorporated gathered sleeves as a replica of floating lanterns, and a frill to the skirt which I had unravelled from the form of a flower. Colour-wise, 71% of the Earth’s surface became the primary colour of my
garment, ‘ocean blue’, alongside a floral watercolour wash.”
