God Grant Me The Serenity

To Accept The Things I Cannot Change

Courage To Change The Things I Can And Wisdom

To Know The Difference

A Word from Fr. Andrew Dear parishioners and friends, For quite some time the press has covered the pending release of a report by the state Attorney General’s Office regarding abuses by Catholic clergy in several diocese in the State of Pennsylvania. Although much has been uncovered and made public already, this report will include the most extensive results of an audit of records in several dioceses dating back some 70 years. The Diocese of Scranton is one of those audited. At the time that this bulletin goes to print, that report has yet to be released. However, between the time that I write this letter and the time that you read it, that may have transpired. Regardless as to when the report is released, I feel compelled as your pastor and as a member of the clergy, to let you know how seriously I am affected by the atrocities that have been allowed to go on. I am heartsick. I know that many of you are deeply hurt and have had your faith shaken. I know that there are questions. I’m acutely aware that there is anger and that there is deep pain experienced by all of the victims and also by so many of our faithful parishioners. All of this is justified. Please know that I will address these concerns directly as I always do, in the very near future, after I have had time to study the said report. In the meantime, should you have any questions or concerns, and for that matter anything that you would like to talk about or to vent, please never hesitate to call on me. I love you dearly, and I truly believe by supporting one another and placing our faith, first and foremost in Jesus Christ, we will be able to walk through this dark time in the history of the Catholic Church. It is my true belief, that Christ who founded this church over 2000 years ago is just as present in it today. He will not abandon this Church. Our faith is not in an institution. Our faith is not rooted in a hierarchy or in the clergy. Our faith is rooted in a Christ who, as Scripture says, “makes all things new!”

“MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, PRAY FOR US!”
