Dear Parishioners, On this, the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, we honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In honoring them, we also honor all families, big or small.

And in honoring all families, we honor the family of God, the Church. But most especially, we focus in on the hidden, day-to-day life of the Holy Family of Nazareth. The family home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph would have been, in numerous ways, just like any other home. They would have related together, talked, had fun, disagreed, worked, eaten, dealt with problems, and encountered everything else that makes up daily family life. Of course, the virtues of Jesus and Mary were perfect, and St. Joseph was a truly “just man.” Therefore, the overriding characteristic of their home would have been love. The Holy Family lived normal family life in every way. This is significant because it reveals God’s love for family life. The Father allowed His Divine Son to live this life and, as a result, elevated family life to a place within the Trinity. The holiness of the Holy Family reveals to us that every family is invited to share in God’s divine life and to encounter ordinary daily life with grace and virtue. Reflect, today, upon your own family life. Some families are strong in virtue, some struggle with basic communication. Some are faithful day in and day out, some are broke and deeply wounded. No matter the case, know that God wants to enter more deeply into your family life just as it is right now. He desires to give you strength and virtue to live as the Holy Family. Surrender yourself and your family, this day, and invite the Triune God to make your family a holy family. “Lord, I do offer myself to You this day and in doing so I offer You my family, our parish family. I offer every relationship, be it good or difficult, and I offer every challenge we face. Please come and sanctify our families, making them holy in imitation of your family in Nazareth.” May God Bless you always! With my prayers, Father Gorka

Second Grade Highlights It is an exci ng me in second grade. Not only are we preparing for the birth of Jesus but we have also begun studying for our First Penance. Each day we add an ornament to our Jesse Tree and learn about another ancestor of Jesus. We are trying to do a kind deed daily for Jesus and we record this on our Advent calendar. In our project for religion, we told the Na vity story and colored illustra ons to match our sentences. The second graders recently had a retreat in prepara on for making Reconcilia on and received their special Children’s Bibles. We are studying the parts of the Bible and about all the wonderful things that God has told us about Himself and Jesus! We will explore the Ten Commandments next!

We con nue to learn new topics in math like 2- and 3- digit place value and adding two and three digit numbers. We are also thrilled to begin cursive wri ng. We learn a new le er each day and we can’t wait un l we are finished so we can read and write in cursive every day. A big part of second grade is improving our reading and wri ng skills. We have wri en informa onal text about topics like pets, the Pilgrims and Christmas Around the World. We have learned the form for friendly le ers and prac ced by wri ng a le er to Santa and le ers to the Star Student for each week. The second graders are avid readers digging into a new story in our reader each week and finding the me to read over 400 books already for the Accelerated Reading Program!

December's prayer intentions are for Father Giuffre.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God falls exactly one week after Christmas, the end of the octave of Christmas. When Catholics celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God we are not only honoring Mary, who was chosen among all women throughout history to bear God incarnate, but we are also honoring our Lord, who is fully God and fully human. By celebrating a solemnity dedicated to Mary’s mother-hood, the Church highlights the significance of her part in the life of Jesus, and emphasizes that He is both human and divine. Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give Mary.

As we begin another year, we draw inspiration from the selfless love of the Theotokos, (“God-bearer”), who never hesitated to do the will of God. And we trust in her prayers to God for us, that we might, as the years pass, become more like her.

O Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!

The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts. Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, the Baptism of the Lord; Christ’s first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the Nativity of Christ; and the visitation of the Wise Men or Magi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man: At Christ’s Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of God the Father is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ’s divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ’s divinity is revealed to the Gentiles - the other nations of the earth. Eventually, the celebration of the Nativity was separated out, in the West, into Christmas; and shortly thereafter, Western Christians adopted the Eastern feast of the Epiphany, still celebrating the Baptism, the first miracle, and the visit from the Wise Men. Thus, Epiphany came to mark the end of Christmastide - the Twelve Days of Christmas, which began with the revelation of Christ to Israel in His Birth and ended with the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles at Epiphany. Over the centuries, the various celebrations were further separated in the West, and now the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Sunday after January 6, and the wedding at Cana is commemorated on the Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord.

Keeping a light burning in remembrance signifies that the memory still lives on and burns bright. It is a ritual that promotes reflection and signifies remembrance. We have three vigil candles located in the Church - Blessed Mary, St. Joseph and Divine Mercy. To request a vigil candle please contact Susan in the Parish Office.

    Happy New Year!

May the Lord BLESS you, with the riches of His Grace; with the treasures of His Love; with the comfort of His Mercies; with the strength of His Presence; with the touch of His Care.

We wish you and your families a blessed 2021.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, We can offer Masses throughout the year for our dear loved ones, friends, those who need help, and those who need most of our prayers or who have nobody to pray for them. These such offerings shorten those souls’ pains and sufferings - helping them to become saints in God’s Heavenly Kingdom. They will be extremely grateful to you; and, you can be sure that they will pray and be with you every step of the way - on your way to Heaven. Consider offering Holy Masses for them. Every Mass is a gold mine and a treasure for the souls in Purgatory. Let all of us try to gain as many friends - saints in Heaven, who through our prayers and Masses achieve the ultimate goal - sainthood and everlasting joy with God. Masses can be offered for any occasion: in thanksgiving for graces received, for the sick and the suffering, family and friends, for conversions but especially for the dying. All of us have much to be thankful to God for. By offering a Mass of private intention or for the living, we can also pray for God’s protection, guidance and help for family and friends. By far the best gift anybody can give and the best and the most perfect present to receive is the gift of a Holy Mass. The Mass Book for 2021 is now open. You may contact the Parish Office at any time to schedule Masses. God bless you, Fr. Gorka

SAINT OF THE DAY Dec 28 - The Holy Innocents - Commemorates the massacre of young male children by King Herod, the Roman appointed King of the Jews. Herod issued orders to kill all the young male children who were two years old or under in Bethlehem and its vicinity. He did this to avoid the loss of his throne to the so called “newborn King of the Jews.” These children were killed for the sake of Christ and are considered the first martyrs of the Church. In honoring these Innocents, the Church honors all who die in a state of innocence, especially very young children and babies. Dec 29 - Saint Thomas Becket - Born in London in 1118 he became a great and favorite friend of King Henry II. In 1162 he was forced to become the Archbishop of Canterbury and defended the freedoms of the Church. Meanwhile, King Henry sought complete control over his kingdom and further sought control over the Catholic Church in England as well. King Henry proceeded with his efforts to reduce the power of the Catholic Church in England while Thomas adeptly and boldly blocked Henry’s efforts. During a dinner with his nobles Henry asked in jest, “Will no one rid me of this archbishop?” Some of his knights took him seriously and murdered Thomas at the foot of the altar in his own cathedral. He was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1173, a mere three years after his death. Dec 31 - Saint Sylvester - Devotion to Pope Sylvester was well known during the early Church. He lived in early Christian times, during the reign of Constantine. He became pope in 314 and reigned for twenty-one years until his death in 335. He is the first Pope who was not a martyr to be proclaimed a saint. Jan 2 - Saint Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen - These two close friends are honored on the same day. Their greatest contributions were as theologians who defined, fundamentally and decisively, what the word Trinity actually means: how Jesus is both fully God and fully man; and how the Holy Spirit is related to God the Father. To these two saints we owe the decisive words that the Holy Spirit “proceeds” from the Father and the Son. Saint Basil was born at Caesarea of Cappadocia in 330. He decided to become a monk and founded a monastery in Pontus on his family’s estate. After founding several other monasteries, he was ordained and, in 370, made Bishop of Caesarea. He was a man of vast learning and constant activity, genuine eloquence and immense charity. This earned for him the title of “Great” during his life and Doctor of the Church after his death. Saint Gregory was born at Arianzen in Cappadocia around the year 330. A quiet, scholarly man, he joined St. Basil in the solitude of Pontus in 358. In 372 he was appointed Bishop of Sasima and he was made Bishop of Constantinople in 379. He eventually retired to his family estate and died in 389. The depth of his theological knowledge and the vastness of his eloquence have made him one of the greatest Doctors of the Greek Church.
