Gospel reflection: Matthew 18:21-35

Jesus tells a striking parable in this gospel about two instances of forgiveness of debts— one lavishly given, the other miserly withheld. The implication made in the parable is that God acts like the extravagant king. But not so. God’s forgiveness of us is always even beyond extravagance, even beyond measure. We measure; God does not. As infinite as God’s forgiveness is, to receive it is not without a substantial condition. We are to forgive one another as God forgives—from the heart, “seventy-seven times.” Only forgiveness that comes from the heart is immeasurable.

By forgiving we repair the damage to the relationship and

restore dignity both to the forgiver and the forgiven. This

is why counting how many ties we forgive—even to the

seven that Peter suggests at the beginning of the gos-

pel—misses the point. Jesus’ response to Peter is a way

of reminding us that God forgives us countless times,

and this is the motivation for forgiving each other equally

countless times. Out “heavenly Father” has shown us the

way—forgive one another “from [the] heart.”

Prayer: Lord God, we lie to count the grievances we

have against each other. Not so with You! Grant us the

strength to forgive with open hearts, recognizing our own

weaknesses and growing in our willingness to beg

forgiveness of you and others. We ask this through Christ

our Lord. Amen

QUESTION: According to the Bible, the Apostles first

received Baptism (John the Baptist), then, second,

Holy Communion at the Last Supper and third was Confirmation at Pentecost

when the Holy Spirit came to them in tongues of flame. Somehow I missed the

part about Confirmation coming before Holy Communion. Perhaps I associated

Confirmation with the wrong event. If this sacrament was not first given at

Pentecost, then when was it given?” [From Rose, a Confused, Retired Catechist]

ANSWER: Aloha Rose! Thanks for your interest in our project to begin

celebrating the Sacraments of Initiation in their Original Order!

The term “original order” does not strictly relate to Jesus’ experience of events,

but rather it reflects the practice of the early Church, where the sacraments of

initiation were celebrated in this order: Baptism, Confirmation and then First

Holy Communion. Thus, we are going back to the practice of the early Church,

which is a theological order.

If you look at the Catechism of the Catholic Church, you’ll notice that the first

three sacraments are covered in this order: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist.

Church documents consistently list the sacraments in that order.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY SEPT. 17, 2017

9:00AM MASS AT

SACRED HEART The Church celebrates

Catechetical Sunday on September 17,

2017. The theme is "Living as Missionary

Disciples." Those who the Community has

designated to serve as catechists will be called

forth to be commissioned for their ministry.

Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity

to reflect on the role that each person plays,

by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith

and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical

Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate

themselves to this mission as a community

of faith. USCCB

Special request - In disaster: Give like the widow [EXCERPT FROM 09/07/2017

HAWAII CATHOLIC HERALD] By Jennifer Carr Allm, Executive Director of the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops [Catholic News Service] ‘Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.’” (Mark 12:43-44) When it comes to charitable giving during a disaster, we are called to give like the widow: give deeply and with a goal and purpose in mind. There are three stages to disaster recovery: Immediate crisis response; Intermediate transitional recovery; Long-term recovery. Recovery from catastrophes takes years. CCUSA’s link makes donating simple: text CCUSADISASTER to 71777 // online at https://catholiccharitiesusa.org; // 800-919-9338. Even though Hurricane Harvey has destroyed thousands of homes, we must remember that there are still expectant mothers, foster children, veterans, the mentally ill, and countless others who needed assis-tance before the storm and continue to need our charity. We all know that the hearts of Texans are deep, and today we ask you to dig deep for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.” Your prayers for the HEROES: first responders to the hurricanes, & victims, are gifts towards healing for all!
