FROM THE DESK OF FATHER JEFF: I would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe July 4th. Thanks to Collum Signs for the nice signs for the raffle and Midsummer Collection.

Our Annual Midsummer Collection will be the weekend of July 30-31. This helps us pay our winter bills, as our collections are not the greatest in the winter (with the exception of Christmas and Easter). Thanks to Fred Weinfurt and his committee for organizing the sale of the raffle tickets. Remember, you have to be in it to win it! The prize is $10,000 and only 200 tickets will be sold at $100 each. Remember, the new edition of the Roman Missal will come out at the end of November 2011. For those of you with a computer, the website is usccb.org-romanmissal or , the Diocesan website: www.drvc.org. For those of you without a computer or who would just like to come, we will be having learning sessions here in the Fall. The Missalettes we use will have the new translation, so we fan follow with them. Don’t forget our wonderful Bake & Plant sale organized by Gina Arresta next weekend.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097.

Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.sacredheartsofjesusandmary.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. FEAST OF FAITH

Little Mysteries

Two small rites—or, as one liturgist has called

them, “little mysteries”—accompany the preparation

of the gifts. The priest or deacon takes a small cruet of

water from the server and adds a drop of water to the

wine. Then, after the elevation of the chalice (and the

incensation, if incense is used), the priest washes his

hands. Both of these actions were at first practical,

matter-of-fact realities: in the ancient world the wine

was usually quite thick, and was generally mixed with

water before it was drunk. And in the early church,

when the faithful brought forward a great variety of

gifts at this time, there was a definite need for the

presider to wash his hands! But now these rites serve a purely symbolic

function. The mingling of the water and wine is

accompanied by a prayer that speaks of the wonderful

exchange of the Mass, the mingling of Christ’s divinity

and our humanity. And as the priest washes his hands, he

prays words of supplication from Psalm 51,

acknowledging his own sinfulness in the presence of the

assembly before he dares to approach the altar for this

most sacred action. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

KID’S PAGE Prayers and history of the Church

______________________ July 3, 2011 Today we remember the apostle called Thomas, “the Twin”. He is also called “Brave Thomas”. When Jesus planned to go to Jerusalem even though it was dangerous, Thomas immediately said to the other apostles, ”Come on. Let’s go, so we can die with him.” (John 11:16) Gospel John 20:24-28 Listen to the words of the Holy Gospel according to John Although Thomas the Twin was one of the twelve disciples, he wasn’t with the others when Jesus appeared to them. So they told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But Thomas said, “First, I must see the nail scars in his hands and touch them with my finger. I must put my hand where the spear went into his side. I won’t believe unless I do this!” A week later the disciples were together again. This time, Thomas was with them. Jesus came in while the doors were still locked and stood in the middle of the group. He greeted his disciples and said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Put your hand into my side. Stop doubting and have faith!” Thomas replied, “You are my Lord and my God!” The gospel of the Lord. Prayer: Jesus our brother, through the gift of your Spirit, and the teaching of the apostles, we proclaim that you are the risen savior; our Lord and God. Strengthen our faith, that we may praise you, Now and forever. Amen

T h i s i s Independence

Day, but you know that! On this day in the year 1776,the Declaration of Independence announced that 13 American colonies joined together to form a new nation. We are happy to be part of a country that declares the right of each person to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” We honor its history and its heroes. We do what we can to protect the beauty of the land we have inherited. Listen to the words of the book of Psalms: Do not put your trust in rulers, In mortals, in whom there is no help. Their breath departs, they return to the earth; On that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose help is in the God of Jacob, Whose hope is in the Lord, their God, Who made heaven and earth, The sea, and all that is in them. The Lord keeps faith forever, Executes justice for the oppressed, Gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. The Lord watches over the aliens, And upholds the widow and orphan. The word of the Lord. Reflection: Why is religious freedom so important? Why should people who were once oppressed be

careful never to oppress others?
