Safe at Home Review

What did we learn this year?

Page 2: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that fire fighters are our friends. Even though they dress funny to do their job, we should never be afraid of them and we should never hide from them

Page 3: Safe at Home Review

• We learned what an emergency is– something dangerous– you need help right away

HELP!

Page 4: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that if we have an emergency, like an accident or a fire, we should call

• We should be very calm and tell the operator our name, address and what our emergency is.

Page 5: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that we should know how to use every phone in our house

Page 6: Safe at Home Review

• Some of our phones will have a dial that looks like this

• We learned that fire is very hot, and creates smoke that is very dark. It is not like we see on television

Page 9: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that it takes three things to cause a fire:

– Heat - or something hot - like a match or a space heater

– Fuel - or something that will burn - like papers or trash or furniture

– Oxygen - which is the air all around us that we need to live

Page 10: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that there are good fires - if fire is used carefully

Page 11: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that every house should have at least one smoke alarm on their ceiling. It can tell us if there is smoke in our house, even before we can smell it.

• Do you know what your smoke alarm sounds like? Push the button to see!

Page 12: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that we should all have a home escape plan that everyone in the home practices together in case of a fire in our home.

Page 13: Safe at Home Review

• When our smoke alarm sounds, we should GET OUT and STAY OUT. If there is smoke, we should crawl low under the smoke until we are outside.

Page 14: Safe at Home Review

• We should have a meeting place outside so we know that everyone is safe.

• Once outside, we can call 9-1-1 to report the fire

• Once we are outside, we should NEVER go back inside for anything.

– Not our favorite toy

– Not our favorite pet

– not even a family member. If you practiced your plan together, they will know what to do and how to get out safely

Page 16: Safe at Home Review

• Remember - things can be replaced, but you cannot. Get Out and Stay Out!

Page 17: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that matches and lighters are adult tools - not toys. We should never play with them.

• Just like a hammer is an adult tool

• So is a lighter

Page 18: Safe at Home Review

• We learned that there are many things in our homes that are hot or can get hot and can burn us.

Page 19: Safe at Home Review

• We need to stay away from appliances like coffee pots

• What are some other appliances that are hot or can get hot that we should stay away from

Page 20: Safe at Home Review

• We need to stay away from open flames like campfires

• What are some other open flames that we should stay away from

Page 21: Safe at Home Review

• We need to stay away from hot liquids like coffee.

• What are some other hot liquids that we should stay away from

Page 22: Safe at Home Review

• We also need to be careful when using our microwaves and eating the food we cook in them. Cool food before eating it.

Page 23: Safe at Home Review

• If we do get burned, run cool water over the burned area for at least 10 minutes, tell an adult right away, and get medical help if needed.

Page 24: Safe at Home Review

• What if we get too close to something that is hot and our clothes catch on fire. What do we do?

Page 25: Safe at Home Review

• Stop where you are• NEVER RUN!

Page 26: Safe at Home Review

• Drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and

• Roll back and forth until the flames are out.

Page 27: Safe at Home Review

• If the fire is on your sleeves, put your arms at your sides and roll over and over until the fire is out

• If you are with someone who catches on fire, tell them not to run, and help them put the fire out by rolling them on the ground or using blankets or water to put out the fire.
