IT WORKS
RPS recently tested soil from a hazardous waste company, which was contaminated with organic solvents. The main concern in testing was for reduction of Hexachlorobutadiene, which was reduced from 283 ppm to less than 0.5 ppm with one treatment (well below the regulatory limit of 5.6 ppm). The time for this reduction was three weeks. Other contaminants were found in the sample and were also quantifi ed as part of the testing. The control (untreated) sample contained Perchloroethylene (PCE) and some of the degradation products of PCE (Trichloroethylene, Trichloroethane, and several isomers of these compounds).
Below are results of testing completed as of April 29, 2011 on the above
mentioned waste solids with values expressed in micrograms per Kilogram:
These tests were conducted by Trace Analysis, Inc. which is a certifi ed (NELAP) environmental laboratory. The analyses were done approximately three weeks after treatment.
Perchloroethylene (PCE) and its direct degradation products are toxic. All are either suspected or known human carcinogens. PCE is known as a “Dense, Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid” (DNAPL) when found as a soil contaminant. Highly mobile, it is heavier than water (density is > 1.6), which makes it of more concern and harder to treat than oil contaminants in soil; oil is lighter than water and does not progress to underwater aquifers as quickly as PCE.
