You are no doubt finding that local planning authorities are increasingly requiring the submission of a ‘Safer Places Statement’ to accompany planning applications for new developments. It is a Government priority that new developments should create safe and accessible environments where crime and disorder or fear of crime does not undermine quality of life or community cohesion.

The introduction of Validation Checklists by many authorities has resulted in a need for security matters to be considered earlier in the scheme evolution. Where previously you might have dealt with issues such as boundary treatments and the installation of access control and CCTV through the discharge of planning conditions you are now having to consider these aspects earlier in the development process.
