What does the smart metering mandate require us to do?
4
“By the end of 2020, around 53 million smart meters will be fitted in
more than 30 million premises (households and businesses)
across Wales, Scotland and England.
This is the biggest national infrastructure project in our lifetimes
and it will enable a more energy efficient system for Great Britain.”*
Suppliers must…
• Install gas and electricity smart meters to all customers
• Pair and commission meters
• Offer energy efficiency advice and Smart Meter Displays
• Demonstrate the system.

So what are industry doing to prepare?
6
• Standardising the way in which installs will be conducted
• Setting agreed training standards
• Industry forums for collaboration – SMOG, SMOG Safety Subgroup, EUK Retail
Group….

Some insights from EDF Energy….
7
• Safety has to be the first thing on the agenda
• QA regimes need to be both robust and flexible (tailored to the individual)
• Reward packages with strong base pay and incentives capped for volume and
only accessible if operatives meet quality and safety standards
• Control of contractor process will be key – High degree of change and complexity.
Transparency and collaborative working with your supply chain can help reduce
risks • Training standards are a great start, but we also need strong technical standards
and a competency exam to be feared.
• Stress and Wellbeing are important too…
