CHEMISTRY 20

SAFETY

INTRODUCTION

CONTACT LENSES

On chemistry lab days contacts will NOT be allowed in the lab.

Goggles are required for all individuals including the teacher and anyone who happens to enter the room during the lab

EYE WASH STATION

There is ONE in the lab

Push the lever forward

FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY!

CLEANLINESS

The success of any chemistry experiment is often dependent on the cleanliness of your work area.

Ms. Possberg’s sanity is dependent on the cleanliness of the laboratory

BROKEN GLASS

Broken glass in a chemistry lab is very dangerous and must be cleaned up and disposed of properly

Please use a broom and tray, then dispose of them in the garbage can by my desk. I will then promptly dispose of the contents

FIRE DRILL

In the event of a fire within the lab please inform me IMMEDIATELY

Follow standard exit procedures and proceed out the high school doorsContinue walking to the soccer nets so as to

not block the door. If it is muddy, please keep in mind others

behind are trying to get away from fire!

PROCEDURES

Lab procedures exist for YOUR safety

FOLLOW THEM!!!!

There is to be NO MIXING of chemicals beyond the procedures provided unless DIRECTLY told to do so

DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS

At the end of the lab many of the chemicals we use often end up down the drain.

These chemicals then end up in your community watershed…(i.e. your drinking water)

Please dispose of the chemicals EXACTLY where instructed…it will be VERY CLEAR

CORROSIVE / TOXIC CHEMICALS

The only thing you can really do is minimize exposureUse glovesTake your timePay attention to what you are doingDon’t drink / smell / touch / taste chemicals

unless instructed to do so

OPEN TOE SHOES

Don’t let your feet have this fate…chemical burns are nasty!

Don’t wear sandles

TIE HAIR BACK

Especially when open flames are being used

I will ask on certain occasions and try to remind individuals with longer hair to bring a hair tie

NEVER POUR WATER INTO ACID

Causes splashing and a release of gases

Also, splashing is bad practice anyways and can actually mess up your experimental results

DEMONSTRATIONS

All demonstrations I perform for you will be done in a safe manner

Please keep a safe distance as instructed to ensure MY safety and YOURS

In the event of an accident during a demoBack away and get help if necessary

ALL CHEMICALS ARE HAZARDOUS

BUNSEN BURNER OPERATION

To light a Bunsen burner Light the match Turn the gas on medium (Remember: “righty

tighty, lefty loosey” Raise the match up to the edge not down to

the top Pull hand away Adjust flame

NB the counters in this lab have shelves above…a Bunsen burner left on will light it on fire in less than ½ an hour

HEATER/STIRRER OPERATION

To never be used at full capacity unless instructed to do so

Beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks can be placed directly on the hot plate

Do not place ANYTHING but Pyrex glass on the burners

FOOD AND DRINK DURING LABS

Nothing is allowed in the lab

NOT EVEN WATER BOTTLES

You can eat in the hallway if you absolutely need to

HAND WASHING

It is mandatory for you to wash your hands before leaving on a lab day

Anything on your hands will be in your food, or anything else you touch

Washing your hands at the VERY LEAST dilutes or rinses away SOME of the chemical that may be present on your hands

SCIENCE

TECHNOLOGY

WHAT BRIDGES THE TWO TOGETHER

SCIENCE

TECHNOLOGY

WHAT COMES FIRST?!?!

The chemical is made and then a potential use is selected for it.

The chemical is made and then applied to a need.

There is a need for a chemical to be made and it is designed for that purpose

IMPACT ON SOCIETY OF NEW CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

Can you think of any examples of a chemicals that have changed our society?

ISSUES IN SOCIETY

How would knowing about chemistry be helpful to identify

Causes of problems -

Solutions to problems -

CHEMISTRY DEFINED concerned with the composition,

behaviour, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions

Has several branches Organic chemistry – carbon based

chemistry Inorganic chemistry – non-carbon based

chemistry Biochemistry – living chemistry Analytical chemistry – analysis chemistry Physical chemistry – properties and

mathematics
