Internal report Introduction to laboratory work at the Department of Animal Science (ANIS)

LAMU

Main Safety CommitteeObjective This introduction is primarily a tool to ensure that the regulations in the Health and Safety Law for work in the laboratory are complied with. As far as the law is concerned, the responsibility for ensuring a sound work environment rests with the employer. In the public sector the employer is the management, i.e. the research directors and in the final instance, the managing director. Apart from complying with the law, the aim is to achieve a good understanding of the practical procedures in the laboratories. This reduces the risk of work-related accidents and illnesses and increases the welfare of employees. However, it is important to emphasise that the responsibility for a safe environment rests with us all. The law thus stipulates that employees have a duty to participate and collaborate in the health and safety at work. You can find further information on health and safety aspects in ”Sikkerhedsmappen” http://intranet.agrsci.dk/institutsites/HBS/ under “Arbejdsmiljø”, where the health and safety committees (LAMU) are presented. The following describes the procedures that must be followed when new employees are introduced to the laboratories and stables at ANIS. The introduction is available both in Danish and English.

Introduction to laboratory work Before a new employee (laboratory technician, trainee, scientist, visiting scientist, student, etc.) starts working in the laboratory or the stable, the employee must be introduced to the health and safety procedures in force in the relevant section/department. The introduction must be conducted by the project leader or by another person appointed to that task by the project leader. The checklist for the introduction is ticked off and subsequently handed to the safety representative. The checklist is delivered to Karin Vikkelsø Østergaard and the new staff member receives a copy. The introduction contains the following elements:

• Regulations for laboratory work Regulations in special laboratory areas, standard laboratory procedures, protective clothing, cleaning, food consumption, etc.

• Regulations for stable work

Regulations for the stables can be found in the safety folder “Sikkerhedsmappen”.

• Location and preparation of suppliers’ safety data sheets and workplace Material Safety Data Sheets and the use of TOXIDO Sixteen points on the preparation of safety sheets. This is done in TOXIDO.

• Location and use of personal protective equipment

Instructions on protective clothing, gloves, face shields, etc.

• First aid and fire fighting Alarm, location of showers, first aid kits, eyewash, fire blankets, foam extinguishers, etc.

• Handling of waste Removal of different chemical wastes, glass, radioactive waste, etc.

• Checklist

Laboratory procedures Special laboratory areas Work with hazardous substances and chemicals, such as carcinogenic chemicals, isotopes, genes, etc. sometimes requires the notification/application for approval/licence from e.g. the Danish Working Environment Authority before work is commenced This type of work also requires separate, detailed instruction, where the relevant safety procedures for a certain process or area are explained by an expert in that area. Standard laboratory routines

• Always wear a lab coat in the laboratory. • Do not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory. • Remove lab coats before consuming food and before leaving work. • Always wash your hands before leaving the laboratory. • No mouth pipetting is allowed, use mechanical pipetting aids. • Bottled solutions should be labelled with the content, concentration, production

date, and initials. Remember hazard coding. • Do not store bottled corrosives above eye level. • Use suitable personal protection – read the supplier’s or employer’s instructions

before work is commenced. • Use fume cupboards if there is any risk of dangerous fumes, splashes or spillages.

Use calm movements in the fume cupboard. Work with as small an aperture as possible. Position chemicals along the side as suction is from the rear of the cupboard. Tidy up and close the fume cupboard after use. Do not store chemicals in the fume cupboard.

• Remove and dispose of spillages according to the relevant instructions for that substance.

• Collect chemical residues in the appropriate containers. Never mix unknown substances.

• Remember to label containers clearly. You will find information about personal protective equipment, emergency telephones location and more.

Preparation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and the use of TOXIDO Before work with hazardous chemicals is started, an MSDS (in Danish: APB) has to be prepared. The APB will normally be based on information from the supplier but has to be adapted to the local laboratory practice. The APB is made in TOXIDO. Protocol to TOXIDO is found in the safety folder “Sikkerhedsmappen”. To be log on TOXIDO contact Hanne Vestergård Berg. TOXIDO is found on http://djfintranet/ under “Genveje”. Content of Data Sheet The data sheet must contain information on the following 16 points, if technically feasible.

1. Identification of the substance/material, including information on trade name and a product registration number (PR number), if available, allocated by the Danish Working Environment Authority. For labelled substances and materials, the producer, supplier or importer will be indicated on the label.

2. Composition/information on constituents, including substances and materials that are classifiable according to the Ministry of the Environment, and information on constituents in the form of organic solvents.

3. Hazard identification. 4. First aid precautions. 5. Precautions against fire, including information on measures to be taken in the event

of a fire. 6. Precautions against accidental spillages, including information on measures to be

taken in the event of a spillage. 7. Handling and storage, including information on the safety protocol with storage on

work premises. 8. Exposure controls (precautionary measures)/personal protective equipment,

including information on action to be taken in the event of exposure and on the use of personal protection equipment, and ban on working alone.

9. Physical and chemical properties. 10. Stability and reactivity, including information on properties when heated or during a

fire. 11. Toxicological information (health hazardous properties), including information on

possible symptoms if ingested or assimilated in the organism. 12. Environmental impact. 13. Disposal methods, including precautionary measures to be taken. 14. Transport information. 15. Regulatory information, including limitations on its use, special requirements in

terms of training, age, etc. of operator. 16. Other information, including its range of applications in the company.

Location The location and personal protection equipment to be used in the workplace should be demonstrated in the workplace and instructions given in relevant first aid procedures and fire fighting equipment. Should be ticked on the list. Handling of waste In order to ensure the correct and environmentally sound disposal of waste, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the waste is sorted, handled and stored correctly according to security regulations. The laboratories at ANIS are diverse and produce many different forms of waste. For example liquid and solid chemical waste, waste from animal experiments, waste from soil and plant experiments, radioactive waste, etc. Summary of waste handling practices at Research Centre Foulum gives a good summary of how different types of waste have to be disposed of and could be used as a guide at other centres as well. http://djf-intranet/CenterdriftFoulum/affaldshandtering.html Questions regarding the disposal of waste contact Morten Andersen from center operation on tel. 87 15 12 15 Kommunekemi in Nyborg has a very good waste guide on the net: www.kommunekemi.dk. If you have problems, give them a ring as they are also very helpful over the phone. Waste notification gives information on EWC-codes for different types of waste. EWC-codes must be stated when waste is sent for processing via a receiving station to Kommunekemi. The notification can be downloaded from www.retsinfo.dk (in Danish only). Supplier safety data sheets and workplace MSDSs provide information on the sorting of the various substances or chemicals into waste groups and waste fractions in connection with disposal. Local receiving station delivers cans and drums. Collects the waste and sends it to Kommunekemi for further processing.

safety gloves. • If working alone in the halls you must have a mobile

phone at your disposal or collect the emergency phone in the lunch room in P30 – also when working in weekends.

Handling of mink in general

• Notify the stable personnel when starting working in the stable and inform them how long you expect to stay.

• Notify the stable personnel when leaving the stable • Beware of slippery, uneven and frozen floors • Stay calm when dealing with animals • Do not stress the animals unnecessarily • Wear dust masks when handing out straw and during

whelping. • In general, you must wear earmuffs when handling the

SAFETY WHEN WORKING WITH HORSES General safety conditions when working with horses

• When working or dealing with animals you must wear safety shoes.

• When working in the feed barn you must wear earmuffs.

• When working with chemicals you must know the APB • When working with hoofs you must wear goggles • If working alone in the stable you must have a mobile

phone at your disposal or collect the emergency phone in the lunch room in K42.

• When handling horses you must wear a safety riding vest.

Handling of horses in general

• Do not enter the horses without an experienced employee or someone who knows the horses.

• Notify the stable personnel when starting working in the stable and inform them how long you expect to stay.

• Notify the stable personnel when leaving the stable • Make the horses aware of your presence before

approaching the horse. • Stay calm when dealing with animals • Do always touch the horse with e.g. a hand, an arm or

a shoulder when you are in the box. • Do not corner the horse • When dragging the horse, do not twist the rope around

your hand. • Do not stress the animals unnecessarily • Wear dust masks when weighing coarse fodder • Avoid sudden sounds or movements

SAFETY WHEN WORKING WITH HORSES

• When handling/treating horses there must be two persons present • Always pass the horse in the front • Beware of slippery and uneven floors and folds

Mounting of experimental equipment on horses in general

• The horse must be in a horse stall when inserting a catheter, nose tube and when

taking rectal fertilizer samples and temperature, muscle biopsies, hair samples and teeth sharpening. Hoof biopsies are taken in the aisle of the stable.

Blood sampling on horses in general

• During blood sampling in a throat vein the horse must be held by another person • Stand at the side of the horse. Avoid standing in such a way that you may be stuck

between the furniture and the animal. Do not stand in front of the horse – it can kick forward with the front leg. Horses can kick far behind and to the side with the hind legs.

Milk sampling from horses in general

• Stand close to the side of the mare with your back towards the muzzle and milk the mare. Mind your head, the hind leg can kick forward and to the side.

• When using a ladder, make sure that the animal cannot reach the ladder and overturn it.

• Do not mount equipment while horses are near by or in the stable

Physical and psychological surveys ("APV")

A physical survey was carried out in the spring of 2012. Action plans have been made.
