SAFIO 2010-2011

Student And Faculty Interaction Opportunities

A great way to get to know and interact with

students outside of the classroom

PhilosophyOutside play and break time is very important to a child’s development and growth. Besides providing important physical exercise it is a time for our

students to learn through movement, play and social interaction.

Our students sometimes need supervision and direction to help them structure their playtime. We love to interact with students during this time

because it is a wonderful learning opportunity for staff also.

We help by making sure students are following the rules, treating each other and property with respect, and making sure that students are supervised,

nurtured and safe in order to best learn in a healthy and worry-free environment.

Learning about free play, learning about our students, and getting to know our students in meaningful ways outside of the classroom can be a great

pick-me-up to our day!

SAFIO teachers are expected to:

• Move around and maintain order• Remind students of the rules• Report incidents (repeat offenders, areas needing coverage, etc.)• Get students attention when you hear the hand bell (this bell rings

as a warning three (1-2) minutes before the electronic bell).

• Make up for missed duty and arrange your own coverage (from your

team) if needed. • Interact in positive ways with the students.• Have a keen and acute sense of supervision over their areas of

responsibility.

Page 4: SAFIO 2010-2011 Student And Faculty Interaction Opportunities A great way to get to know and interact with students outside of the classroom.

Students should not :

• Run in the halls or stairwells.• Stand or walk on benches• Have any food or drink (except water and sports drink)

outside of the canteen. • Play by the Church, in Admin. bldg, the Middle School or

the Swiss School.

• Make unnecessary noise or disruptions to classes or offices.

• Be disrespectful toward anyone in any way.

Page 5: SAFIO 2010-2011 Student And Faculty Interaction Opportunities A great way to get to know and interact with students outside of the classroom.

When students don’t follow the rules….

• They should be told: a) what they are doing wrong b) the proper way(s) they should be acting c) how they can change their behavior. • They should sit down where they are for 15 minutes or the rest of

the period (which ever is longer). • They should take responsibility for their actions (apologize, clean

up, play correctly…)• They should be sent to the office if a major or repeated infraction

occurs. Wrongs are always righted in respectful, positive,

learning oriented styles.

When being outside is not safe…what is our plan?

• RAIN – is the usual culprit, but this plan could be used for other reasons

• The next 3 slides explain where the students will go and who will supervise them.

Page 29: SAFIO 2010-2011 Student And Faculty Interaction Opportunities A great way to get to know and interact with students outside of the classroom.

Missing? Make it up?

• As we talked last year there were some things we decided as a staff. If you know you will be missing a SAFIO slot, speak with someone on your team or department to see if you can’t trade days with them.

• If nothing can be worked out, let Ms. Chu know in person or by email and she will arrange a substitute

About SAFIO

• “Supervision duties and Break and lunch are part of the Full Time Teacher’s responsibilities. They are not included as part of the teaching periods. The Principal assigns supervision duty. If the Principal recommends exceptions, approval of the Head of School must be obtained. Teachers who have less than normal teaching loads[,] are expected to substitute for other teachers when asked by their Principal” (RIS ES Faculty Handbook 2008-2009, p. 1000/1).

• Ideally SAFIO duties change from quarter to quarter. Sometimes it is the period that changes and sometimes it is the location of the SAFIO.
