INTRODUCTION• Electricity consumption in Kuwait has experienced

growth in excess of 100% over the past decade.

• This increase is attributed to population growth and huge number of buildings.

• The extensive use of air-conditioning system along the summer period ,which consumes 70% of the peak electrical load.

• Low consumption rate .

• Lack in saving energy awareness.

Page 5: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

• Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) represented by Technical Supervision Department, applied a Conservation Strategy for air-conditioning (AC) and lighting to reduce and rationalize the electrical load during the peak period (12:00 pm – 5:00 pm) in many buildings of government and private sectors, since the summer 2007.

• By this procedure, we save 22,749.73 MWh, which is around 15.2 % of the electrical load during the peak period for these buildings, in summer 2010.

STRATEGY OF CONSERVATION OPERATION ON DIFFERENT

SECTORS• In summer 2010,MEW applied conservation

operation strategy on 52 buildings included the following sectors:

The conservation operation strategy were applied on two main consumable systems in the buildings, which are AC and lighting .

Private Colleges

AC SYSTEM :1. Partial closure of air conditioning, air handling

Units (AHUs) and reduce the number of chillers at 12:00 pm which is the beginning of the peak period during the days of the week, then it restarted before the start of working hours the next day.

2. Run the minimum number of AC chillers , AHUs and water pumps in the case of the use of water chillers without impacting negatively on the indoor environment of the building during working hours.

Page 8: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

3. Adjusting the thermostats at 27 C after the official working hours.

4. Install a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD),which is used for controlling the rotational speed of an alternating current electric motor by controlling the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the motor.

5. Using Double Glassing with air vacuums system for windows.

Page 9: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

LIGHTING SYSTEM :1. Utilization of efficient types of light with energy

savings (fluorescents).

2. Using the timer for the outdoors lighting and the sensors for indoors lighting, to save energy.

3. Using the Electronic Ballasts instead of Magnetic Ballasts with the lamps.

4. Adjust lighting in the elevator, so it turns off automatically when it is not in use.

GREEN BUILDINGS PROJECTS

The Ministry of Electricity and Water is established this project in cooperation with

different sectors :

1-Green Building Strategy for the MEW/MPW Complex

3-Demand Side Management of Major Power users through

optimum remote control in cooperation with KISR

4-Energy design guides for school buildings and hospitals

facilities

2- Energy Efficient design of low rise residential buildings in Kuwait in cooperation with

Kuwait University

Page 13: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

• Energy Auditing is the optimum utilization of the resources of energy available without compromising the comfort or productivity of the occupants, or impairing the efficiency of appliances and equipment used.

• Lighting consumes nearly 10% of the total electric load during peak period, in Kuwait most parking lots lights are overestimated.

ENERGY AUDITING OF PARKING LOT

Page 14: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

GUIDELINES FOR ENERGY AUDITING OF PARKING LOT• Take advantage of daylight in lighting outdoors.

• Maintenance of the Fixtures Should be on regular basis.

• Retrofit lighting into more efficient ones such as: 1- Retrofit from FT-12 into FT-8. 2- Retrofit magnetic ballast into electronic ones.

• Reduce the intensity of lighting in stairs.

• Control the lighting in the elevator so it turns off automatically when the lift is not in use.

Page 15: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

ENERGY AUDITING OF AL-ADDAN PARKING LOT

• The parking lot is recently opened to the public on a construction area of 10,000 m2 of 1,000 vehicles capacity.

• It consists of two flour besides the roof. The design of the two flours is similar while the roof is opened area. The parking lot has four entrance and four exits.

• There are (600) fixture. Each fixture consists of two (4ft, 36 WFT-8) lamps with magnetic ballast.

• The measured Lux during daylight is 344 while the

measured Lux during night is 160.

Page 16: Safiya & suad & ghadeer the energy conservation measures in government & private buildings

• Turn off roof lighting during daylight.

• Delamping of first flour.

• Retrofitting with (4ft, 36 WFT-8) lamps with electronic ballast.

• Installing occupancy sensors on the entrances and exits.• Rewiring of the control switches with the fixtures so the

one switch controls half of the fixtures and the other switch the other rest half.
