PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners: This Sunday’s gospel is one of my

favorite scriptural passages. Others may read it as an interesting story about the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. But for me, it is a lovely portrayal of each one of us when we come to Mass.

Like the two disciples, we are all walking home on our heaven-bound journey. Like them, we may be walking “downcast.” Looking back at “all the things that had occurred” makes us sad and dejected. Looking at the road ahead makes us worried. Our paths are uneven and our crosses heavy. We seem at times to be walking with no purpose and we spend a lot of time searching for meaning.

But, we’re not alone. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,” Jesus said (Matthew 18:20). When we come together at Mass, Christ himself comes and accompanies us, just as he did with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. If we earnestly seek him, he will manifest himself to us. “Ask and you will receive,” he promised, “seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9).

The reason we, like the two disciples, don’t readily recognize Jesus, is because we don’t really know him. As St. Jerome puts it, “ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.” That’s why we need scripture readings at Mass. Through them, “beginning with Moses and all the prophets,” we come to an intimate encounter with the Risen Lord.

Only then will our spiritual eyes be opened to recognize him when the priest breaks the bread on the altar. How sad it is that many people don’t even realize that there is a “breaking of the bread” during Mass! Is it any wonder why so many people still go home after Mass downcast, sad and depressed?

When we attend Mass with our ears attentive, our eyes opened, and our hearts “burning within us,” we will never have to urge him to “stay with us” again, “for in him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

OUR LADY OF FATIMA’S 100TH ANNIVERSARY

All are invited to a special Mass and devotion in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima on Saturday, May 13, in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral (5th Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, Manhattan). LA PERSPECTIVA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos feligreses: El evangelio de este domingo es uno de mis pasajes bíblicos favoritos. Otros pueden leerlo como una historia interesante sobre los dos discípulos en el camino a Emaús. Pero para mí, es una hermosa representación de cada uno de nosotros cuando venimos a la Misa. Como los dos discípulos, todos estamos caminando a casa en nuestro viaje al cielo. Al igual que ellos, podemos estar caminando “abatidos”. Mirar hacia atrás a “todas las cosas que habían ocurrido” nos hace triste y abatido. Mirar el camino que está por delante nos preocupa. Nuestros caminos son desiguales y nuestras cruces pesadas. Parece que a veces estamos caminando sin ningún propósito y pasamos mucho tiempo buscando significado. Pero, no estamos solos. “Porque donde dos o tres están reunidos en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos”, dijo Jesús (Mateo 18:20). Cuando nos reunimos en la Misa, el mismo Cristo viene y nos acompaña, igual que hizo con los discípulos en el camino de Emaús. Si lo buscamos sinceramente, se manifestará a nosotros. “Pedid y recibiréis”, prometió, “buscad y hallaréis; llamad y se os abrirá la puerta” (Lucas 11:9). La razón por la cual nosotros, como los dos discípulos, no reconocemos fácilmente a Jesús, es porque no lo conocemos realmente. Como dice San Jerónimo, “la ignorancia de las Escrituras es ignorancia de Cristo”. Es por eso que necesitamos lecturas de las Escrituras en la Misa. A través de ellos, “comenzando con Moisés y todos los profetas”, llegamos a un encuentro íntimo con el Señor Resucitado. Sólo entonces nuestros ojos espirituales se abrirán para reconocerlo cuando el sacerdote rompa el pan en el altar. ¡Qué triste es que muchas personas ni siquiera se dan cuenta de que hay una “ruptura del pan” durante la Misa! ¿Es de extrañar por qué tantas personas todavía ir a casa después de la misa abatidos, triste y deprimido? Cuando asistimos a misa con nuestros oídos atentos, nuestros ojos se abren y nuestro corazón “arde dentro de nosotros”, nunca tendremos que exhortarlo a “permanecer con nosotros” otra vez, “porque en él vivimos y nos movemos y tenemos nuestro ser” (Hechos 17:28). 这主日的福音是我最喜欢的福

音章节之一。别人也许把关于去往大

马士革路上的两位门徒当做一个有

趣的故事来读，而为我来说，这是我

们来参与弥撒的一个美丽的画像。

如同这两位门徒，我们都走在回

归天乡的路上；也如同他们一样，我

们也许在“情绪低落”的走路。回顾过去“所有发生的

事情”使我们沮丧和失望；前方的路让我们担心和恐

惧；我们的道路不平，我们的十字架沉重。有时候我们

看上去是没有目的行走，用大量的时间来找寻意义。

但是，我们不是孤单的。耶稣说：“哪里有两三个

人因我的名字聚在一起，我就在他们中间”（玛 18:20）。

当我们在弥撒中聚在一起，基督自己来到我们中间，和

我们一起，正如他对大马士革路上的两位门徒所做的。

如果我们真切地寻求他，他就会把他自己显示给我们。

“你们求，必要给你们，”他许诺说，“你们找，必要

找着；你们敲，必要给你们开”（路 11:9）。

就像两位门徒一样，我们没有准备好认出耶稣的原

因是我们没有真正的认识他，正如圣热洛尼莫所说：

“不认识圣经，即不认识基督”。这就是为什么弥撒中

需要读经部分。通过圣经，“从梅瑟及众先知开始”，

我们得以与复活的主亲密地相遇。

只有当我们灵性的眼睛睁开，才能在神父在祭台上

擘饼的时候认出耶稣来。让人难过的是很多教友都意

识不到弥撒中还有“擘饼”这一刻！怪不得许多人弥

撒后仍是沮丧失望的回家了！

我们参与弥撒的时候，耳朵要注意聆听，眼睛要打

开，我们的心要“火热起来”，我们就不需要再次请求

主“留下来”，“因为我们生活、行动、存在，都在他

内”（宗 17:28）。
