Dear Friends in Christ,

“Every one of you who does not renounce all his posses-sions cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33). When we first

trusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we

can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess

or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the

many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His

Disciples.

Plant

If you want corn, you know what to plant. If you want apples, you know what to plant. It’s how things work. The thing is, it’s not just plants that work that way. Maybe you call it karma. My grandfather liked to say that “it all comes back by return mail.” St. Paul said “as ye sow, so shall ye also reap.” Whatever you call it, it’s how life works. And it’s why St. Paul tells us that our duty as Christians is to “encourage one another and build each other up.” When you really put the effort in to do something well. Or to make something to the best of your ability. You know how great it feels when someone tells you how im-pressed they are with it. It only took them a moment. But you feel 10 feet tall. When you get hit with bad news. Or something goes horribly wrong. Or maybe you’re just having a having a bad day. You know what a blessing it is for someone to have a kind word for you. It may seem like the smallest thing to them. But to you it means the world. If you and I want to live where that happens. Where encourage-ment is the norm. Where support comes when needed. Then we need to be the ones who start it. So how do you start it? By grounding yourself in gratitude, gratitude to God for all that God has done for you. Do it by thanking God for each thing that God has given to you. List out each thing. Start small, and thank God for each one. You won’t be able to do it for more than a minute or two before God will change your whole perspective. If you keep it up, you will find that – even in the middle of life’s hardest things, death, illness, divorce, job loss – God will ground you in this quiet joy. A joy that overflows. A joy you cannot contain. That is what you start with. That is where the support and en-couragement that you can give will come from, the joy that comes from grounding yourself in gratitude for all that God has done for you. That is what you plant. And it will change the world. - Deacon Jim

Annual Catholic Service Appeal... Soon each parish family will be receiving a letter from Bishop Paprocki asking for support of our larger diocesan church. The annual appeal assessment for St. Aloysius Church this year is $51,458.00. I invite our Parish family to prayerfully consider this appeal. The theme is “Together in Mission” Christ calls us to consider our gifts and to return a portion of them to him through our parish and the larger Church, our diocese. Joining with other parishes in our diocese, we can all work together to care for the Church by sharing God’s gifts. Thank you for your generosity. Are you interested in the Catholic Faith? We will begin a new journey in faith to share the richness of the Catholic Church and our parish family. We invite you to learn what the Church teaches, and be introduced to some of our parish members. These sessions also are opportunities for you, and others that you may wish to invite, to ask those per-plexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. If you know someone

who may be interested in learning more about our faith invite them to join the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) You can accompany them (give them moral sup-port) to the sessions as they explore our faith. RCIA will begin Wednesday, September 18. Your word or deed can make a difference. The RCIA Schedule includes: September 18, 7:00pm, First Meeting: Welcome; Stories; Why Catholic with Fr. Clint. September 25, 7:00pm Church Tour with Fr. Clint.

ChargerFest will be held on the parish parking lot next Saturday, September 14. It will include a dinner catered by McCormick’s, a cash bar, and live music provided by The Cold Peppers and Gracia Harrison, former contestant on The Voice. There will also other activities planned including a Magic Show and Cake Walk! We are looking for cake donations. Cakes can be dropped off at the school office on Friday, September 13.

Helping Others…We must speak to others with our hands before we try to speak to them with our lips. Providing immediate relief to the hungry in our communities is the goal of Catholic Charities Holy Family Food Pantry. Through the donations of local businesses, churches, school groups, individuals, and the tireless dedication of volun-teers, thousands each year receive relief from hunger and help to find solutions for the future. The Holy Family Food Pantry is greatly in need of your assistance. During the summer, food donations are reduced but the need increases. Our shelves are still very low. With the holidays fast approaching, we are in great need of food donations. Please help by bringing food to church or directly to the pantry. All food items are needed at this time, however the most needed are as follows: tuna, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, canned pasta and canned fruit. Thank you for your donations and generosity.

91st Annual Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Convention This event will be held at St. Boniface Church, 110 N. Buchanan, Edwardsville on Wednesday, September 25. Registration and morning refreshments, 8:00am with the Convention starting at 9:00am. Mass follows at 11:00am. celebrated by Bishop Thomas John Paprocki. The Convention finishes up with a luncheon after Mass. Guest speakers are Deby Sansone Schlapprizzi and Maria Rodgers O’Rourke. For more information, contact Sue Schwegel at (618) 466-4208 or [email protected].

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time... September 8, 2019, Being a disciple. Jesus is relentless. One more time he tells the great crowd: carry your cross, renounce posses-sions, be my disciple. Following him requires relentless behaviour. We are to have an unwavering preference for Jesus above parents and family. But we cannot forget that care for them and all others is also attention to Jesus Christ. It is both-and. Always.

How will I behave to assure myself I am following Jesus?

What must I do to carry my cross one more day, one more week?

What possession (s) can I give away for someone else to use?

St. Al’s Seniors... Attend the 8:20am mass on Tuesday, September 18 fol-lowed by coffee/breakfast at the Park-way Café.

Youth Choir rehearsals will be in the school music room on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30pm. Students will sing at 10:30 mass on Sunday, September 22.

KC Council 4175 (Springfield North Council) is beginning their fall fish fries. The next fish fry is Friday, Sep-tember 13. Thank you for your support.

St. Aloysius Prayer Chain... If you have a special intention or someone whom you would like prayers offered please call Mrs. Vikki Warren @ 217-544-2299. STEWARDSHIP ...Gracious and lov-ing God, we understand that you call us

to be stewards of your abundance, the caretakers of all you have entrusted to us. Help us to use your gifts wisely and to share them generously. May our faith-ful stewardship be the hall-

mark of our discipleship, a visible sign of our commitment to Christ. We pray with grateful hearts, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
