Mission:
Congratulations
Deacon Jeffrey Craig!
On Thursday, October 3,
at Saint Peter Basilica,
Vatican City, Jeffrey M.
Craig, along with 29
classmates from the
Pontifical North American
College, was ordained a
Transitional Deacon.
Deacon Craig is the son of Glenn and Laurie Craig of
Warrendale and parishioners of Saint Alphonsus. He
attended Saint Alphonsus Elementary School, Quigley
High School and Duquesne University. He is continuing
in his theological studies at The Pontifical North
American College in Rome.
Rejoice for the “yes” of these young men who have
accepted the Lord’s gift and calling. Please remember
Jeff in your prayers as he continues to prepare for
Ordination to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ in June,
2020, at Saint Paul Cathedral, Pittsburgh. We will
continue to share information on Deacon Craig’s journey
to priesthood as it becomes available. Congratulations,
Jeff!
Spring Time in the Fall!
The “Fall Kick-off” of the high school faith formation
took place recently. It was great to have about 60
teenagers participate in this event. Praise God!
Thanks to our young people for their interest, and to
parents for your support. Under the leadership of the
Holy Spirit and David Piccirilli, coordinator of Youth and
Young Adult Ministry for the Catholic Community of
Wexford, we can expect even greater things to take place
– mainly, making disciples for Jesus.
The high school formation program follows the Life
Teen Ministry Program which is used in parishes across
the nation and countries around the world. It provides a
healthy balance of worship, education, service and social
events. Young people appreciate these different
components along with the relationships that are fostered
with their peers.
Parents, for the sake of dear children, please continue
to direct and encourage your children to take part in the
various faith formation options within our parish
community. A relationship with Jesus and the experience
of his love are the real building blocks of life on earth and
eternally in heaven. It’s a privilege for us to work with
your children and help them prepare for their future with
confidence in God! For more information about the great
things that are happening with all the faith formation
programs in our community, visit us at
saintalphonsuswexford.org or stalexis.org.
A Time for the Shepherds to be
Shepherded Thanks to everyone who prayed for Father Joe,
myself, and all the priests of the Diocese along with
Bishop Zubik and Bishop Waltersheid during the
Triennial Convocation of Priests. For me, it was four
days of being spiritually fed while having time to enjoy
the company of brother priests.
The speakers included Thomas Cardinal Collins,
Archbishop of Toronto and Father Michael E. Gaitley,
MIC, author of 33 Days to Morning Glory, a-do-it
yourself retreat in preparation for Marian consecration.
Presentations focused on the importance of prayer, the
beauty and universal nature of the Psalms, the necessity
for sacrificing ourselves on behalf of the people we have
been called to serve, the strength of the Lord in the midst
of our challenges, the role of Mary in our lives, and the
victory that is ours in the Lord Jesus.
These days offered inspiration and renewal. As your
priests, we renew our commitment to serve you to the
best of our ability while being faithful to God in what is
asked of us. Please continue to pray for priests. Know
the difference your loving, prayerful presence makes in
our lives. Thank you!

The annual Saint Alexis Day
of Caring/Fall-Clean-up is
scheduled for Saturday, October
26 following the 8:00 a.m. Mass
and will continue throughout the
day. We need your help! Join
us in caring for what has been
entrusted to us. This semi-annual event promises to be
rewarding; working with fellow parishioners and
experiencing the satisfaction of what we are able to
accomplish together. This year, we hope to remove
seasonal flowers and provide a general winterization of
the grounds. All families and individuals are welcome!
We can use a pick-up truck or two, steel rakes, gas
weed wackers, straight-edge shovels and gardening tools
in general. Any amount of time you can give will be
most appreciated! Please RSVP by calling the Par ish
Center at 724.935.4343, extension 221, so that we gauge
the scope of projects and have an adequate amount of
refreshments available for our guests.
In the event of rain, we will convene at the same time
on Saturday, November 3. Thank you for your
participation and practice of good stewardship!

Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis News Evangelization Principle 2: Just listen!
By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization
The next most important lesson to learn about evangelization is to listen first and
speak second.
When we imagine what evangelization looks like, we probably draw up images
in our minds of street preachers or far off missionaries bringing the Gospel to ends of
the earth. The good news is that while those are valid forms of evangelization, we
don’t have to be street preachers to be effective evangelists. One of the greatest
Catholic communicators in history, Frank Sheed, made a valid point. Sheed said that if
he had one hour to evangelize someone, then he would take fifty minutes to listen and
ten minutes to talk. This is because each God draws each of us to Himself in different ways. Not everyone followed the
same path away from God, and not everyone follows that same path back to God. We need to listen and see where
people are in their feelings toward God, the Church, morality, Christians and their life! We need to hear their story so
we can effectively tell the story of Jesus Christ. Then we can answer the questions we know they have and not the
questions we think they have. This can be very difficult because some of the people we are trying to reach might be
very far from God and caught in sin and disorder. We have to fight the impulse to look at their life and tell them
everything we think is wrong and how to fix it. Remember, God is incredibly patient with us, so we should be patient
with others. If you have always wanted to evangelize and share Jesus with someone, now is the time to take two simple steps. First, pray for them, then build trust by listening to them.
As we come together each week we will answer all your questions and take a deep look at the way in which the Church interprets the Gospel of John.

Bethlehem Haven Needs You!
Volunteer opportunity
available! We are looking for more
parishioners who would like to join
our outreach ministry.
Our committee prepares and
serves dinner on the second
Saturday of each month to the homeless women of
Bethlehem Haven’s permanent supportive housing shelter in
Uptown Pittsburgh. Please consider cooking part of a meal
to donate, providing meal items (such as beverages or
bread), driving the food to the shelter or serving the meal
and visiting with the women -- or volunteer to do a
combination of these options. Dinner is provided for up to
26 women at 5 p.m.
Bethlehem Haven provides shelter and supportive
services to thousands of homeless women. The continuum
of care consists of a range of housing and supportive
services designed to enable each woman to identify her
needs, develop a plan of action and achieve a successful
outcome.
Bethlehem Haven believes that a secure home is an
essential foundation for women to achieve stable mental and
physical health as well as personal empowerment. Every
woman who lives there is linked to supportive services,
specially designed for their individual needs. Bethlehem
Haven helps clients identify an action plan to achieve self-
sufficiency and permanent housing.
New members are welcome at any time. Servers must
be female and at least 16 years old. Other opportunities with
this ministry are open to everyone. We also support school,
scouting and other group projects such as providing
homemade cards and gifts, table and seasonal decorations or
collecting toiletries or other items found on the shelter’s
website wish list: https://www.bethlehemhaven.org.

Reflect. Renew. Retreat.
Is the busyness of life stressing you? Have you ever felt the need to get away to clear your head? If the answer is yes, consider attending an upcoming Emmaus Weekend. You will meet people like you who are also grappling with life’s big questions. You will have a chance to reflect and renew, worship and praise. The weekend is coordinated by lay people who will not try to convince or preach to you. Instead, they will share experiences and let you draw your own conclusions. The connections made at these weekends can supercharge your personal and spiritual life. If you have been putting this off, what are you waiting for? The women’s weekend will be held October 26-28 at the Kearns Spirituality Center in Allison Park. The men’s weekend will be held on December 6-8 at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Pittsburgh. Both retreats take place in a relaxed atmosphere, minutes from home. Private rooms and food are provided. Help Needed For The Catholic
Community of Wexford Welcome
Committee Ministry
The Welcome Committee Ministry welcomes new parishioners to the Catholic Community of Wexford for both Saint Alexis and Saint Alphonsus parishes. Due to an influx of newly registered parishioners, we are looking to expand our committee. (This is a good
problem to have!!) We are in search of 4 to 8 additional members from Saint Alphonsus parish. Currently, there are only two members from Saint Alphonsus involved in this ministry. The time commitment would include helping host a quarterly Welcome Luncheon (a combined Saint Alexis/Saint Alphonsus event), as well as reaching out to newly registered parishioners. Our next luncheon is scheduled for Sunday, October 27. This ministry DOES NOT include Hospitality/Fellowship Sundays. If you are interested in becoming involved in this important ministry, please contact Leslie Mitros at [email protected].

On Tuesday, October 1, Blessed
Francis Seelos Academy 8th grade
students had the unique opportunity to hear Mrs. Lynne
Ravas, a daughter of a Holocaust survivor, tell the story of
her father surviving the Holocaust. Her inspiring story,
with such a surprise ending, had the students full attention.
The students had many thoughtful and interesting
questions which she graciously answered.
Mrs. Ravas said that she was quite impressed with the
students and their knowledge of the Holocaust and wished
a safe journey to the students when they visit the Holocaust
Museum in Washington D.C. later this month.

Help Immigrants Living in Pittsburgh
Faith based volunteers are needed to help immigrants who live in the Pittsburgh area. Compassionate Accompaniment Reflective Experience (CARE) is a program that connects parish-based volunteers with immigrants and their families who are undocumented or awaiting asylum in the U.S. It is a service of Casa San Jose, the community center for Latinos started by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Volunteers provide transportation and support for grocery shopping, visits to doctors, and ICE appointments. Training will be provided for all volunteers. If you would like to learn more about this program, please contact Miriam Manion at 412.668.0190.
