SAINT AMBROSE PRAY FOR US! HISTORY OF ST AMBROSE, OUR PATRON: St
Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, Confessor and Doctor of the Church, is
one of the genuinely great men in the whole, long history of the
Church. It has been said of him that “his historical importance
cannot be exaggerated” yet, he is far more memorable as a zealous
pastor of souls, the very embodiment of the bishop’s office. His
symbol is the beehive, which reminds us at once of his unflagging
industry and his sweet and persuasive eloquence. He is one of the
great preachers of all �mes. He was born about the year 340 of a
noble family and he was des�ned for the career of a public
official. At the age of 34 he was governor of Liguria in Northern
Italy with headquarters at Milan. During the stormy elec�on for a
man to fill the vacant post of Bishop of Milan in the year 374,
Ambrose was called in his official capacity to keep order in the
Church. While he was speaking to the crowd someone cried out
“Ambrose for Bishop” and the cry was taken up by the people. He was
bap�zed, confirmed, received first communion, and ordained all in a
few days. He was to be a Bishop for 23 years. He died on Holy
Saturday in the year 394. (drawn from a document prepared by

HISTORIA DE SAN AMBROSIO, NUESTRO PATRON: San Ambrosio, obispo
de Milán, confesor y doctor de la Iglesia, es uno de los autén�cos
grandes hombres de toda la larga historia de la Iglesia. Se ha
dicho de él que "no se puede exagerar su importancia histórica",
sin embargo, es mucho más memorable como un celoso pastor de almas,
la encarnación misma de la oficina del obispo. Su símbolo es la

How long has it been since my last Confession?

HISTORY OF ST AMBROSE PARISH Saint Ambrose was ini�ally in the
parish of St. Mary of the Mills in Laurel as part of the territory
administered by Archbishop John Carroll of Bal�more. When Saint
Jerome in Hya�sville was established, our parish territory be-came
part of that parish, and beginning in 1883, a priest would visit
this area to minister to Catholics. In 1886, a wooden chapel was
built on proper-ty donated by the Wilson family, giving Catholics
of Old Landover and its surrounds a more permanent arrangement. The
oldest document tes�fying to the existence of Saint Ambrose is a
le�er dated July 12, 1886 from Cardi-nal James Gibbons, Archbishop
of Bal�more, to the pastor of Saint Jerome parish, Father Walker
Caughey. The le�er gave permission to set up the Sta�ons of the
Cross. The li�le wooden chapel was used to celebrate Holy Mass and
for the Sac-raments of Ini�a�on and Forgiveness un�l January 1960
when it was de-molished and the remains burned to make way for the
John Hanson High-way. Ground was broken in November 1960 for the
new and magnificent Saint Ambrose Church on the hilltop where it
now stands. The original bell tower has survived. There are two
li�le windows showing a small angel caressing a large beehive. The
double doors, used as the entrance, are the original inside doors
of the church. The Archbishop of Washington, Patrick O'Boyle,
established the independ-ent parish of Saint Ambrose in 1948 when
he separated it from its parent church in Hya�sville. He sent
Father Ronald Fannon to be the first pastor and Father Fannon
worked un�ringly, building upon the founda�ons of true
Catholi-cism. Monsignor Philip Brown con�nued the work a�er Father
Fannon's death in 1954. The parish prospered under their guidance
and from their hard work and the work of all those who helped them.

HISTORIA DE LA IGLESIA SAN AMBROSO San Ambrosio fue inicialmente
parte de la parroquia de Santa María de los Molinos en Laurel en el
territorio administrado por el Arzobispo John Ca-rroll de Bal�more.
Cuando se estableció San Jerónimo en Hya�sville, el territorio de
nuestra parroquia se convir�ó en parte de esa parroquia y, a par�r

Timeline of selected events
1950 April 23: Ground-breaking for the new parish building
October 1: The convent opens October 2: First day of school, with
only the first four grades November 12: Dedica�on of the
auditorium, school, and con vent
1951 January: Father Leo Cody comes to assist Father Fannon
June: Father George Ellis, just ordained, arrives as Assistant
September: The new rectory opens; the school is opened with a full
complement of eight grades.
1954 December 9: Father Fannon dies. 1955 January: Father Philip
Brown arrives to assume the Pastorate. 1956 September: Eight
classrooms are added to the school, bringing
the total number of rooms to sixteen. 1960 Permission is granted
to begin the preliminary work toward
building and financing a church building March 6: The Most
Reverend Philip M. Hannan breaks ground November 12: Excava�on
begins.
1961 December 17: The building is blessed and set apart for wor
ship by Archbishop O’Boyle.
1999 December 4: New altar is installed and dedicated by James
Cardinal Hickey
2020 December 6: New rectory is blessed by His Eminence Cardinal
Wilton Gregory.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Ambrose Conference, 70th
Anniversary St. Vincent de Paul Conference was founded 70 years ago
on December 7, 1950, the feast of St. Ambrose. There were 12
members originally including John J. Buckley, President; John
Olsavsky, Vice President, John Quinn, Treasurer; and Jus�n
Dunlavey, Secretary. During the first year the group made 34 home
visits, and assisted 2 families with food and fuel. The total
budget for the year was $192.36. The Society's work included
assis�ng Father Fannon in welcoming new families to St. Ambrose and
rec�fying marriages. For 70 years God has blessed us with many
opportuni�es to con�nue in the work of St. Vincent here at St.
Ambrose, sheltering the homeless, opening a pantry to feed the
hungry, and providing many families with food, housing and u�lity
assistance. Thank you to all of the parishioners of St. Ambrose for
your assistance.
