How to Tell You This? This is my first year at Saint Andrew Parish and many

things are new to me. Sure, at other parishes I have worked on parish staffs for nearly 17 years, but that doesn’t mean I know how to address the realities of Saint Andrew parish. Many of you have been kind to me in this respect, but sometimes I’m stumped, and if I’m honest, talking about the events planned for the week ahead is one of them.

Next Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday we host the annual Parish Mission. When I talk about the mission with parishioners, I get a variety of looks which vary anywhere from “What is a parish mission?” to “Why should I care?” to “Oh, I’ve never gone because…”

I don’t know how to respond because I don’t know the history at this parish, but for me and my experience, the Parish Mission is THE thing. It’s what I pay the most attention to.

Why? First of all, “What is it?” A parish mission, at its basic level, is just a quality speaker coming to do a set of talks, built around a theme, and aimed to inspire a parish community. In our case, we are jointly hosting the Parish Mission with Saint Benedict Parish in our chapel, and we have two speakers, Sr. Sallie Latkovich and Joe Paprocki (who wrote the book we are using for One Book One Parish).

But why should we, in our busy lives, drop everything we are doing for this one thing? Because it is our only chance, all year, to have one point of spiritual reference for the whole community. The Confirmation students will have their retreat, the First Communicants will have their retreat, some

people might go on a pilgrimage, some went to the Ministry Enrichment Gathering at DePaul University, and so on and so on. There are many, wonderful things that parishioners do to enrich their spiritual lives, but the Parish Mission is the only time that the entire parish is invited to have one thing that we all do together.

My old pastor used to talk about Parish Missions with these words “A Parish Mission is like a Parish Retreat.” Many of us went on retreats in high school and college, but it is hard as an adult. A Parish Mission allows us to go on a retreat, and gain spiritual insight, even when we don’t have the total freedom to let go of all responsibilities with family, work, school, etc.

#Noexcuses. Recently a parishioner noticed something about the Parish Mission and so she used the hashtag #noexcuses on Facebook to her friends to come to the mission. Why? Because this year, the Parish Mission also offers an optional dinner for you and your family (please RSVP at 773-525-3016), and also a children’s program that will reemphasize the mission’s themes (RSVP preferred), and it also starts earlier (6:30 PM), so it will end in time for families to be home for bed-time rituals. For those at Saint Andrew School, because of school testing, you also have the benefit that there won’t be any homework next week. By posting #noexcuses, this parishioner pointed out on her posts that (within some reasonable expectation that things do happen in life) this year, there is no excuse not to go!

Maybe she’s right. And maybe in a year from now, I’ll write a different invitation letter as I better understand life at Saint Andrew parish, but for now, I’d like to use my time and energy to invite you to come. Come all three nights. Come one night. Come two. Do what you can. But come! For me, a Parish Mission is our chance to grow spiritually so that we can better be the Church that Christ wants us to be here in Lake View. I hope to see you there!

Parish Mission PrayerDear Heavenly Father,

You have chosen us to be Your beloved sons and daughters. You have created us in your own

Image and likeness to know you personally. You have sent your Son

So that we may all be one family with you. Therefore, we come not as individuals,

But as one community, lifting all in prayer. We pray not for our needs, but for the needs of

Each other, and for our neighbors That we are yet to know.

We come not to receive, but to share the love Which you so freely have given to one and all.

So, bless our Parish Mission with the abundance of your love.May our hearts be open to know your Son, Jesus, in our lives,

Drawing us ever closer together, as one body in Christ.Allow the Spirit to renew and refresh us with heartfelt joy,

That we may rejoice as one family - joined in one faith - Within the love of one God.

Alleluia, Alleluia Amen.

Parish Mission PrayerAt both Saint Andrew and Saint Benedict Parishes this prayer is offered

during the period of preparation and during the mission. Please pray it with us and comeSunday, April 10 through Tuesday, April 11, 2016.

Please pray this prayer when invited to pray it at Mass and throughout the week during your personal prayer time.

We look forward to seeing you at the Parish Mission and continue to pray for the growth of our community through, with, and in Christ.

Help Us Make the Sale Even More Successful!

We appreciate all of your donations! To make sure we can sell all of your donations, please help us with the following:

Puzzles & Games: please tape boxes closed or use a rubber band to keep boxes closed

“Open Face” Puzzles: please tape down pieces or attach pieces in a ziplock bag

Shoes: please tie together or pair together using a ziplock bag

Toys with Multiple Parts/Pieces: please use ziplock bag, tape or other means of keeping pieces together

ClothingWe will happily accept donations of gently used clothing from infant to pre-teen.

* If you have a little extra time before dropping off your donations, clothing sorted by gender would be really helpful

* If you have even more time before dropping off your donations, clothing further sorted by size would be fantastic!!

At the sale we display clothing according to gender and size in order to maximize sales (i.e., raise more money for St. Andrew). Any sorting you can do at home prior to dropping off your donations saves our volunteers lots of time. Please note that this is not a requirement but would be very helpful if you have a little extra time.

Donation Collection TimesPlease consider utilizing the donation times early in the week. The earlier we receive donations, the more we can do prior to setting up the sale which saves our volunteers lots of time.

Thank you!! Your donations mean a successful sale and we really appreciate each and every one of them!

Sincerely,Kristi Kowalczuk and Laurie BischelGarage Sale Co-Chairs
