From the Pastor’s Desk...
on Ash Wednesday (March 14th) cannot be completed until what has happened to us inside church is moved outside the church, into the street, the market place, the work place, the home. The Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa of Jesus (d.1582) taught that the purpose of grace is “good works, always good works”, and after she had died her sisters found these words in her prayer book:
“Christ has no body now but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which he is to look out Christ’s compassion
to the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good.
Yours are the hands with which He is to bless others now.”
AN AFFAIR OF THE HEART – In the end though, after all the good works have been done, religion is an affair of the Heart, and this is why the final two ripples of each
Paschal Triduum are the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (this Friday) and the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (this Saturday). Only then, with our hearts touched and rekindled, can we return fully into Ordinary Time. As Pope Francis has said, “We, the women and men of the Church, are in the middle of a love story; each of us is a link in this chain of love. And if we do not understand this, we have understood nothing of what the Church is.”
*****************************
CHOIR CONCERT – I hope you will join me in Chapel this afternoon at 3:00 PM for our annual Concert of Sacred Music by our Parish Choirs and a big THANK YOU to Tom Denny and all of our singers and musicians!
MASS SCHEDULE CHANGES & MEETING – As of Sunday July 1st our Saturday Vigil Mass will moved to 4:30 PM in St. Ann Chapel and our Sunday evening Mass at 6:00 PM will be discontinued. I will be in Chapel this Monday night at 7:00 PM to hear and respond to your thoughts and concerns in the wake of these changes and also to see if we can name any grace that is being offered to us at this moment both as a community and as individuals.
FAREWELL – I hope you will be able to stop into Griffin Hall at some point between 1:00 and 3:00 PM on Sunday June 17 to wish Fr. Heim farewell and all the best as he leaves St. Ann’s to return to Maryknoll in New York.
“LET US PRAY” - The twin sources of our Faith are: 1) Scripture and 2) Tradition. That said, how do Scripture and Tradition enter into us and become part of our memories, hopes, decision-
making, words and actions? The chief way is through the celebration of the Liturgy. This has been expressed rather poetically in the Latin phrase “Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi” which can be roughly translated as: “How we Pray = How we Believe = How we Live”.
Seeing the Form is the title of the first book in the major theological series titled The Splendor of the Lord by Hans Urs Von Balthazar. Seeing the form, connecting the dots, discerning the pattern that lies below the surface of normal sensory perception is
perhaps the chief way in which liturgical celebration serves us. Ritual makes visible what is most real; liturgical celebrations bring to light the Deep Truth as they simultaneously conform us more deeply to the One Who Is Truth Itself. That said, today is a good day to review and to preview the liturgical trajectory (“Lex Orandi”) that brings to light how we are to live (“Lex Vivendi”).
MBS – We can never capture nor begin to exhaust the mystery that is Most Blessed Sacrament (MBS) of the Eucharist. That said, in order to encounter the Eucharistic Lord and also hand
on the Faith to each generation, our Tradition presents three main avenues of approach to the Eucharist: 1) Sacrifice; 2) Meal; and 3) Presence. Each year on Holy Thursday we fittingly accent the MBS as sacrifice (Jesus washes the feet of his disciples) and the MBS as meal (“Take and eat this is my body. Take and drink this is my blood of the new covenant”). Today, on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, our Tradition highlights for us the MBS as the Real Presence of the Lord.
SOLEMNITY of the BODY and BLOOD OF CHRIST – Every Mass ends with a procession as we carry within us the One we have received out of the church and into the world.
That said, today each parish on the planet will conclude at least one Mass with a solemn, communal, outdoor procession with the Eucharistic Jesus visibly present in a monstrance. The celebration that we began 110 days ago

Have a Holy Summer - The lazy days of summer offer many opportunities to bring your family closer to God. Try ideas like these to have a happy and holy summer:
Sing a Psalm - Choose a psalm that praises God for his mercy, kindness, and love, such as Psalm 103. Learn a new line each week and sing or recite it together at dinner time or bed time. By summer’s end, you will have learned a new way to praise God.
Strengthen a Virtue - Virtues are good habits. For example, temperance can be practiced by limiting the amount of time spent watching television or using electronics. Charity can be strengthened by volunteering for a local aid organization as a family.
Read a Story - The Bible is a library of books that weave together the story of our family of faith. Read about heroes, brave rulers, warriors, prophets and thrilling victories. For example, the first book of Samuel (chapter 16) begins the account of David, a poet and musician, warrior and king with an extraordinary love for God. Or, read about the remarkable journey Moses led out of slavery found in the book of Exodus.
Visit Him Each Week - Weekly Mass is an important way to bring your family closer to God. Even when you are on vacation, visit www.parishesonline.com to find a Mass close by.

CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Spotlight Solidarity is one of the seven key principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Solidarity reminds us that we are one human family whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. We are our brothers and sisters keepers, wherever they may be. In solidarity, let us remember our brothers and sisters in Niger, Guinea, Mali and The Gambia who are dying from malaria. Malaria deaths have been reduced by 60% since 2000, yet this disease remains one of the largest killers of children in Africa. It’s time to do more. We can prevent malaria. We can treat it. With your help, we can work toward eliminating it. To find out more information, visit www.crs.org and click on "Crush Malaria."
