Standing with Christ

In today’s first reading from Acts 7:55-60 we learn about the

martyrdom of Saint Stephen, the first Christian to ever die in

witness to the truth of Jesus Christ.

The scene takes place at the end of a long speech that Stephen

had made before the Sanhedrin, Jerusalem’s Supreme Court. In

his discourse he summarized the entire history of salvation,

explaining that Jesus was indeed the long-awaited Messiah and

rebuking the Sanhedrin for rejecting Christ. In response they fly

into a rage against Stephen and that’s where today’s passage

picks up.

We are told that Stephen has the presence of mind to look up to

heaven in his moment of need, and because he looks upward

instead of inward is granted a vision of Jesus STANDING at the

right hand of God. This is interesting, because many times the

New Testament describes Jesus at God’s right hand, but this is

the only time He is standing. In every other instance He is

seated. And so in this instance Jesus adopted an active posture

and showed Stephen that He is standing with him in this

moment of trial and suffering - that He is with him.

In the end, Stephen’s vision didn’t save him from his enemies’

violent anger, nor did it rescue him from suffering. But it did

renew his courage and strengthened him to stay true to Christ,

the true object of his love, rather than giving into the pressure

and denying what he loved.

In many ways the story of Stephen’s martyrdom challenges us:

that when we are faced with a trial or a suffering or some

important choice, we must resist the temptation to turn in on

ourselves and force ourselves to look up to Heaven and to Jesus

- to recognize that Christ is standing there for us, more than

willing to actively get involved in our struggle.

Seventh Sunday of Easter

At the conclusion of the Last Supper discourse, Jesus intercedes

with the Father for the unity of all believers. In him the prayer is

both made and answered.

Jesus has just given his disciples the great commandment of love.

Now he asks his Father for the grace of unity among all

believers, the icon of his communion with God. The Lord Jesus

speaks here as head of his Body, the Church, which is perfected

by the unity of its faith and of its love. Born of the divine love

which wills to save the world, it must become the sign of that

love given to humanity. Thus is completed the circle begun by

incarnation. Returning to his Father, the Word who has come into

the world draws humanity with him into the communal life of

God. Jesus has not only manifested the glory of God, he plunges

us into it.

Science Stars

An article from the Spring 2019 Saint Anne Gazette

by Aaron Mathias, 8th Grade

Saint Anne students had a great showing at the state level competition of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy

of Science.

Nine students competed and we had seven 1st place awards and two 2nd place awards.

The state competition took place the weekend of May 19 at the Pennsylvania State University campus.

Students from all over the state came and demonstrated their science experiments. In order to qualify for the

state competition, they had to have received a 1st place in their regional competition. So even getting there is

an honor.

Matthew Vogel, Aaron Mathias, Andrew Logan, Amy Gorscak, Lauren Campbell, Eli Smith, Michael Todd,

Stephen Mescan, and Laura Kutschke all got 1st place awards and made it to state competition.

All the students from our school did great! Aaron Mathias, Andrew Logan, Amy Gorscak, Michael Todd,

Stephen Mescan, and Laura Kutschke all got 1st places! Matthew Vogel and Eli Smith received 2nd place!

All the kids who competed said they would like to come back again. “It was fun!” said Matthew Vogel. The

kids stayed in dorms, ordered pizza and got to watch movies.

A special thanks to Mrs. Laird, who worked so hard with all the students to get their projects together, and to

Mr. and Mrs. Kutschke, who were our chaperones.

Anointing Mass

On May 15th Saint Anne School hosted the annual Anointing of the Sick Mass. Our

4th - 8th grade students were in attendance to witness this beautiful Sacrament.

Following Mass our 8th grade students helped to serve lunch to those who

attended.

Saint Anne School Cyclones

Recently, members of the Saint Anne Cyclone teams gathered to make 140

lunches of sandwiches, snacks and granola bars. The lunches were delivered to

the Red Door downtown, which serves those in need. All the food items were

donated by the students and appreciated by the staff at the Red Door. This is the

second time the teams have gathered to help serve others. Well done, Cyclones!

CARE

CARE is a program created by committed Catholics in Pittsburgh

working with Casa San Jose, the community center for Latinos in

our area founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph and located in

Beechview. CARE works to connect parish-based volunteers

with Pittsburgh residents and their families who are legally in our

country awaiting asylum. These families are in need of

accompaniment and emotional, social service and spiritual

support when integrating into their communities or attempting to

comply with immigration proceedings. Miriam Manion is

organizing CARE efforts at St. Anne. We are seeking volunteers

to participate in CARE at St. Anne to support immigrants from

Latin America. Casa San Jose will coordinate training and

orientation for volunteers from St. Anne before they are assigned

a family to help. Volunteers can provide a little or a lot of time to

helping families in need, depending on their availability. Our

parish liaison will coordinate our volunteer schedule. Ideally,

each volunteer would support one family but it is also possible

that multiple volunteers would support one family based entirely

on volunteer time and client family need. Please contact Miriam

Manion from St. Anne for more information and to volunteer

(412) 668-0190 or [email protected]

Our Safe Environment Coordinator will be available for

assistance with parish volunteer clearances from 9am-1pm in the

Parish Office TODAY, June 2. Appointments are encouraged,

and walk-ins are welcome. Paper forms will also be available in

parish office throughout the week and on our website at

www.stanneparish.com. All parish volunteers must be in

compliance with safe environment regulations in order to

volunteer. Please call the parish office for more information at
