READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: THE LAW OF LOVE

To love one’s enemies may be the most difficult teaching of Jesus, the one that leads many times to act in direct contradiction to the wisdom of the world. Yet that is at the heart of His message. FIRST READING Take no revenge and cherish no grudge; love your neighbor as yourself. (Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18). The priestly authors who produced this book remind the Israelites that if they truly believe in the holiness of God, then they must try to reflect that holiness in their lives. Looking with eyes of holiness changes the way that we look at life (our faith, morality, even politics). This has consequences on how we treat each other. We are to love one another with the same love with which God loves us. SECOND READING You are the temple of God, and holy (1 Corinthians 3:16-23). For Christians, our temple is the human body, for we encounter the Holy Spirit of God in our own hearts. All people, therefore, should be treated with sacred dignity. Paul had been preaching the wisdom of God, the wisdom of the cross, in Corinth. One of the difficulties in the community of Corinth was factionalism. Paul relativized the importance of the various apostles and missionaries to remind the Corinthians that their only true goal was to follow Christ whole-heartedly. This is especially important to hear now in an era of increasing factionalism in our Church, the world, politics, etc.

GOSPEL Offer no resistance; love your enemies (Matthew 5:38-48). The law of the Old Testament, “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth,” was actually a compassionate rule that limited the extent of revenge one could extract from one’s enemies. Jesus, however, demands an even greater spirit of generosity. He challenges His listeners to respond to hurt and injustice with charity and goodness. Jesus realized that violence begets only more violence. Only love can break the vicious cycle of hurt and revenge. St. Maximilian Kolbe was asked by a fellow prisoner in Auschwitz, “Shouldn’t we hate the Nazis?” His answer was, “No, because only love conquers.” We hear that our love should be like that of the Father. He loves and cares for everybody (good, bad and indifferent). We view those who have hurt us as wounded (what they have done to us is only a symptom of their brokenness). We only want them to be healed. Jesus calls us to be perfect (pure) in love, just as God is. REFLECTION “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:19). Does Jesus know what He is asking? Living like that can lead to my demise. But that’s exactly what Jesus did when He was arrested and when He stood before Pilate and when His executioners struck and ridiculed Him. He walked His talk. While He died on the cross, resurrection and new life came from the actions of those who had acted in an evil way toward Him. These words challenge us, and challenge they ought. Yet, if we’re honest, resistance and retaliation have not ended or lessened evil. They put it at bay for a while, but it rises even stronger then before, like the terrorism and violence evident in every part of our world, when force is lifted. Jesus asks us for more. Go two miles, hand over your cloak, do not ignore those in need, love your enemies. Tough love sets limits, creates boundaries, and challenges behavior in order to invite change, not to seek revenge. Pope Francis lives Jesus’ teaching that only love can reduce hate and rob evil of its power. Force may be necessary at times, but evil is reduced only as long as the force lasts. Without deeper change evil returns once the force is gone. Being holy, for God is holy, means to love God, St. Francis de Sales taught. To love God we must love our neighbor. As the temples in whom God’s Spirit dwells, we love God when we respect all God’s children. This can be difficult enough in the face of goodness. In the face of evil it is our greatest challenge. How do Jesus’ words challenge you?

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK POLICY ON MASS INTENTIONS Church Law, Canon 948 states that “separate Masses are to be applied for the intentions for which an individual offering has been made and accepted. The priest who accepts such offerings is bound in justice to satisfy the obligations personally or by committing them to another (Cc. 989, 954-55).” In 1991, the Congregations of the Clergy issued a decree in which permission was given to accept several offerings for a collective intention at a single Mass.

The following regulations must be observed :

1) The donors must be informed of and consent to the combining of their offerings before the Mass at which the collective intention is. 2) The time and place for the Mass must be announced. 3) The practice may not be observed more than

twice a week. 4) The offerings are to be placed in the general funds of the parish.

These collective intentions will be held at St. Anthony Parish on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the year, provided the day does not fall on a Church Feast or Holiday, such as Christmas.

No more than five intentions can be celebrated at each of these two Masses. These intentions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. All other Masses will be offered for a single intention only, in accord with Church Law.

If you would like to have your Mass intention offered sooner than the parish can accommodate, Mass intentions can be sent to the Joliet Chancery Office where they will be sent to retired priests, who will offer them at their convenience. Only one Mass intention a day can be accepted by any priest.

If you need any clarification of this policy, please see the Pastor at your convenience.

“I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

The $14 fee provides a Commentary and Study Guide. Participants also need a Bible. It is helpful to have a study edition. The Bible Study is sponsored by Adult Faith Formation.

2017 Lenten Fast and Abstinence Regulations

1) Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

2) All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

3) On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

4) To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

5) Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

EUCHARIST DISTRIBUTION

You may have noticed changes in the way the Eucharist is being distributed. In order to preserve the reverence in the Eucharist, it was decided to move the station from the back to the front of the church. We invite all who are physically able to join us in the front for Communion. Those who are not able, the Eucharist will be provided. Please notify an usher when you come to Mass. Once the side aisles are finished, ministers will come to the back of church. When you see the ministers approach please raise your hand. For questions, call Dcn. Joe Johnson, 815-469-3750, x111.

Are you looking for a closer Relationship with God?

Come to the Life in the Spirit Seminar…

The Life in the Spirit Seminar is designed as an evangelistic tool, a formation experience, and an introduction to a life lived in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. The Life in the Spirit Seminar is intended for anyone who desires a new awareness and deeper relationship with God, especially through the working of the Holy Spirit. The seven weeks of sessions help participants realize the fire, the breath, the gifts, fruits and the charisms of the Holy Spirit.

Although we receive the life of the Spirit through the Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, many of us need to fan this spark of life into flames. The Seminar invites us to gather and prepare for a very personal “Pentecost,” a new release or revitalization of the Spirit’s presence.

The sessions/topics of the whole Seminar include:

God's Love. How Jesus saves us. Everyday life as a true Christian. Being open to all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Growing in our New Life. Becoming more like Jesus.

Life in the Spirit Seminar presentations sponsored by the St. Anthony Holy Spirit Prayer Group. For information, please contact Terry Murphy at 815-603-5509.

I n this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells His listeners that He wants us to show by our

loving actions that the Kingdom of God is already here. We don’t have to be perfect in everything, but we have to love others the way Jesus did. Jesus knows that we are human and cannot always be perfect. He does not expect us to know how to do everything correctly all the time. But Jesus does expect us to serve the Kingdom of God by following His example of loving others, including our enemies, and being generous to those who need help.

Question For Children:

What can you do at home or at school to show that you follow Jesus’ Commandments? Do you think Jesus was serious when He said to love your enemies?

Question For Adults:

Have you ever told someone to do something for his/her own well being? Do you accept God’s laws in the same spirit of love and concern?

CATECHIST CORNER

What Does It Mean To Say, “Forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us”?

Merciful forgiveness—the mercy that we show to others and the mercy that we ourselves seek— is indivisible. If we ourselves are not merciful and do not forgive one another, God's mercy will not reach our hearts. Many people have a lifelong struggle with their inability to forgive. The deep blockade of being unreconciled is resolved only by looking to God, who adopted us "while we were yet sinners" (Rom 5:8). Because we have a kind Father, forgiveness and reconciliation in life are possible.

Mission Statement We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to live the Gospel in our daily lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
