St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

From Our Pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler De Nuestro Párroco, Padre Mateo Zuberbueler

Dear Friends, Does absence make the heart grow fonder? “They” say it does. We are in what seems to be the early stages of a tempo-rary “new normal” in the church and in the world. I’m sure you agree that what we are experiencing now is somewhat unimaginable and is difficult to navigate. Like you, we here at the parish are trying to accept the many limits and changes with a spirit of doing what is best for eve-ryone. Obviously, we don’t want to do anything to allow the number of people harmed by a virus to increase. Christian charity teaches us not to harm others. So, we try to make the best of these unusual days, offering prayers and sacrifices for the good of all. I sincerely believe (and already have seen evidence for it) that this time will be a great opportunity for renewal in our faith and in our lives. One key reason for this is the fact that we are being forced to go without some very great supports, things we have grown accustomed to—and perhaps have tak-en for granted. You know that I am referring to the great great gift of Holy Communion and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! Bishop Burbidge was saddened to make the historic decision to suspend public Masses indefinitely. It was surreal to hear him say it and it has been surreal to begin living it. This weekend was to be our 50th Anniversary celebration. Fifty years of daily Masses in our church! Fifty years of faithful people approaching God and finding Him here at our altar! In a way, our cancelled public celebration and the spiritual way it is occurring will be a lesson by contrast. We have this moment to see in relief the tremendous gift of coming togeth-er around the altar of God as His People. Imagine how it will feel, in the not too distant future, when we return to worship together in our church. That will be a joyful day, reminiscent of the first Mass here in 1970! Meanwhile, I invite you to make this unexpected desert experience a fruitful time. Re-fresh your search for God. Be glad when you experience hunger for the Bread of Life. Be close to each other and to God, even though we feel keenly a lot of separation. I invite you to live our temporary parish motto: Socially Dis-tant, Spiritually Close. God dwells among His people. He is taking care of us. Rejoice in the many ways you find Him. Stay close. With my prayers, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler Pastor P.S. Please stay connected by our social media and website.

Pray with us by watching our Mass each day online. Look for ways to help people around you. Lastly, please sign up for Faith Direct so that we can avoid a financial crisis here at

St. Anthony’s because there aren’t any Sunday collections.

Major Parish Changes Due to Pandemic Times

Here at St. Anthony’s your priests will offer the Mass each day, privately, for the intentions and needs of the parish and our parishioners. We will offer all of the Masses for all of the particular intentions that many of you have already asked of us in our 2020 calendar.

We will soon be able to offer a recorded daily Mass and two Sunday Masses, one in English, one in Spanish. The record-ed Masses will be posted on our website and social media sites.

The church will be open for private prayer. Parishioners are strongly encouraged to make a Spiritual Communion each day, trusting in the Lord Jesus to share with them the grace of Holy Communion.

Confessions will be offered at the regularly scheduled times but they will not be in the usual confessionals. Instead, con-fessions will be heard in the three meeting rooms down the hall to the right of the main entrance to the church (past the gift shop), Rooms 8, 9, and 10. We will use these rooms so that the prescribed social distancing rules can be observed for your protection and ours. We ask that you observe the same rules of distance and contact while waiting in line for confes-sions.

Stations of the Cross, the Perpetual Help Novena (on Wednesday evenings), and Benediction of the Blessed Sacra-ment will not be held.

All groups, meetings and activities are cancelled until further notice.

The Parish Office remains open at their usual hours for now.

The Gift Shop remains open with modified hours.

In these uncertain times we at St. Anthony are practicing Social Dis-tancing and Spiritual Closeness As we find new ways to gather in Prayer and worship we ask all to keep church stewardship in mind. Without your regular support of our Padua Fund Poor Box and your weekly contribution in the collection, our outreach and minis-tries are jeopardized. You can Sign-up for Electronic Giving (Faith Direct). Electronic Giving allows your weekly or monthly contributions to be charged to your credit card or transferred electronically from your checking or savings account directly to the church account. While away physically and staying safe, you can have peace of mind knowing that your pledge has been received and is contributing to the work of the church. You can log on at https://membership.faithdirect.net/VA924. If you prefer to donate differently or need help, contact our business manager, Elaine Ventura, at 703-220-6075 or [email protected].

Grandes cambios parroquiales debido a tiempos pandémicos

Dear St. Anthony Families, Please join us for a virtual tour of our exciting newly expanded Pre-school. We are a Catholic Community focused on a responsive Christian approach to early childhood learning, one that brings young students to the best kindergarten readiness place they can be. Meet our team via your computer on April 2 at 6:00 pm. You will view a video tour of our school, meet the faculty, and see our stu-dents at work. Following the video tour, you will have the opportunity to participate in a question session in real time via Facebook Live and messaging. All of this experience will be socially distant, but spiritually close in the special St. Anthony way. It will allow you and your entire family to get a sense of our parish school. Please take the time to register by email at [email protected] or visit our preschool page on our website, www.stanthonyofpaduacommunity.com/school/academics/preschool-stanthony/ the day of the virtual tour. We open the virtual doors at 6:00 pm on Thursday, April 2. With my thanks and prayers, Nora Buçaj Principal

Youth Ministry

“If a tiny spark of God’s love already burns within you, do not expose it to the wind, for it may get blown out… Stay quiet with God.” –St. Charles Borromeo, a Saint during the Plague, 1576–78 As we prepare to face the realities of our community’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we may feel that a tiny spark of God’s love is all we have. And now that we can’t readily go to Mass, or other spiritually renewing activities, it is important to find ways to stay quiet with God, and be creative on how to protect that spark of His love and spread the fire of the Holy Spirit… I challenge not just the youth of our parish, but all parishioners and their families to go viral by sharing that spark that is evident in the Gospel, and entrusting our current situation to Jesus Christ. Here is how you can stay SOCIALLY DISTANT but SPIRITUALLY CLOSE with St. Anthony of Padua Youth Ministry.

Regular Zoom video conferences on Sundays at 6:30 pm

St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

Instructions: 1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross. 2. Make an Act of Contrition. 3. Pray the first 3 decades of the Rosary (optional). 4. Pray the Meditation of the Week. 5. Pray the last 2 decades of the Rosary (optional). 6. Pray the Prayer to Mary, Undoer of Knots. 7. End with the Sign of the Cross.

Meditation for the Sixth Week Queen of Mercy, I entrust to you this knot in my life:

[Mention your request here] and I ask you to give me a heart that is patient until you undo it. Teach me to persevere in the living word of Jesus, in the Eucharist, in the Sacrament of Confession; stay with me and prepare my heart to celebrate with the angels the grace that will be granted to me. Amen! Alleluia! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Prayer to Mary, Undoer of Knots Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know very well how desper-ate I am, my pain, and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of his children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the Evil One himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and inter-cessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot: [Mention your request here] I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all. You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution, and, with Christ, the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me. A correction in the second paragraph of the Novena brochure (POPE FRANCIS & OUR LADY section): “Through your grace, your intercession, and your example, de-liver us from all evil, Our Lady, and untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and er-ror, may find Him in all things, may have our hearts placed in Him, and may serve Him always in our brothers and sisters.”

Instrucciones: 1. Hacer la señal de la Cruz 2. Acto de Contrición 3. Rezar las tres primeras decenas del rosario 4. Oración (meditación) de la semana 5. Rezar las dos últimas decenas del rosario 6. Oración a María, Desatanudos 7.
