Blow, Kindle, Ignite. Last weekend our family went camping. We are not exactly hardcore wilderness survivalists, but we sleep in tents and like doing our cooking over the fire. I have a special fondness for coffee perked over the fire. It is a wonderful way to begin the morning. Fire can be difficult to maintain, and easy and even cooking takes consistent heat. The variables are tricky to control. I was reminded early on of the need for kindling, and constant stoking of the fuel, which was all wood in our case. I sent the kids on many stick gathering missions. It was not unusual to have to blow on the embers to rouse the flames. In the end, we had wonderful meals, and wonderful coffee. Pentecost Sunday reminds us that we already have the Holy Spirit dwelling among and within us. Sometimes the fire is smoldering, sometimes it is raging, and most often it is gently and warmly animating our Christian character. It is easy to forget the fire that burns within us. On this feast day, we pray that our faith is reignited, that our zeal for the Lord is renewed. By the way, it was through his breath that Jesus imparted the Holy Spirit to his disciples. One of the titles given to the Holy Spirit is Giver of Life. When Jesus breathed on the disciples, he was giving them a share in the divine life. The Church was thus born on Pentecost because a great outpouring of the Spirit was given. What we do as followers of Christ is guided, given credence, and enlivened by the Holy Spirit. It is the enabling by the Spirit that gives our actions a spiritual nature. When we open ourselves to the actions of the Spirit, then grace abounds; grace flows through us to bring change to our troubled world. Let us pray for the courage to examine our fires. To stir the embers, to blow fresh air upon the flickering ash, and to reignite those areas in which we have allowed the cold and dark to creep. Let us also pray that our fire would help start new fires in others. May our being, consumed by the fire of the Spirit, give life to others who feel life has been taken from them. Our fires have not died, may they be stoked to continue the building of God’s reign.

Knights of Columbus Annual Meeting The annual meeting for Club 1881 will be Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at 7:00 at the hall on Vine Street. The annual meeting is important to all members in that it

affords all members the opportunity to vote on issues concerning the club. This is different from the regular monthly

board of directors meeting where only the board members vote on issues. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending.

Dear Parishioners, Although another school year has come to an end, there is still quite a bit of activity here. The search is on for a new fifth grade teacher (thanks to Sr. Kathryn for the last 26 years), classrooms have been emptied so carpets can be cleaned (thanks to Marge Tillotta and a happy retirement), and tutoring continues. The hard work of faculty, staff, parents, and students has earned the school awards for excellence and a very good reputation. Now we look toward the next school year. We have a vibrant ministry in our school. What we need are more students. I am asking all parishioners to be recruiters. I’m sure there are children in the community that could greatly benefit from what we offer here: not only a fine academic education, but an education in faith and values that will serve them well all through their lives. This is our way of helping parents in their roles as the primary educators of their children. If you know of any families whom you think might benefit from what we can offer as a Catholic school, please invite them to check us out. If there is a question about costs, have them call Bruce Schooler (219-866-5480) to talk about assistance. We are the best ambassadors for St. A’s. Together we can fill our classrooms. Thank you, FD

Farewell to Sister Kathryn Kirk! After twenty-six years of loyal service to St. Augustine School, Sister Kathryn is retiring. She has repeatedly said how she thoroughly enjoyed being a part of our school ministry, and will especially miss servicing the needs and interests of our children. Sister Kathryn

intentionally delayed her retirement announcement, so that she could continue to focus her time, energy, and attention on her children right up until her last scheduled day of work. Sister Kathryn did ask that anyone wanting to send her well wishes may do so by sending a card or letter to: Sister Kathryn Kirk P.O. Box 451 Wheatfield, IN 46392. Please know that the energy, spirit, and love generated by Sister Kathryn will forever be a part of St. Augustine School. She may not be here next school year and beyond physically, but her spirit and all of the love she afforded us will remain forever! God bless you Sister Kathryn, and best wishes for a happy and healthy retirement.

On June 25, 26 and 27, the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana will be sharing the Diocesan Uniting in

Heart 2030 Pastoral Plan. There will be one

presentation in each Deanery. St. Augustine

will host the Fowler Deanery meeting on June 26th at 9am in the church basement. This plan took many factors and data analyses

of our diocese into consideration, and will make a once in a lifetime impact to our diocese. Your attendance at your deanery meeting

is crucial to the future of our diocese.

senior servers that have continued to serve

Mass throughout their high school career.

The group wanted to recognize these

individuals for their service to God, the
