CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, Larchmont, New York January 31, 2021

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

QUOTE FROM THE PASTOR “Let your face shine on our servant. Save me in your merciful love.” Psalm 31:17

Pastor’s Corner

WAIT. WHAT?

The connection is clear. First, in Deuteronomy we hear Moses reminding the Jewish people of God’s promise to send a prophet who will speak all that God commands. And in the Gospel, Jesus astonishes the people by com-manding an unclean spirit to come out of a man. But sandwiched between these texts, today’s short excerpt from First Corinthians seems like a bait-and-switch. St. Paul starts with an attention grabber: “I should like you to be free of anxieties.” Yes, we would like to be free of anxiety! Tell us what to do. Then the other shoe drops: we can either be unmarried and please the Lord or married and please our family. Wait. What? Just when we’re about to move on in disappoint-ment, a glimmer of light works its way through a tiny crack in this narrative: “ . . . I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord without distraction.” Married or not, we do very little without distraction these days, so maybe, just maybe this unexpected read-ing is for us after all. Maybe it’s not so much about our status but about our priorities. Do we ever focus on God without distraction? Or do we move through our days giving God only the leftovers of our time, our energy, our love? Our God is not an either-or proposition. When we focus on God single-mindedly for even part of our day, everything else falls into place. Mary DeTurris Poust, Give Us This Day, January 2021.

Mary DeTurris Poust is a writer, retreat leader, and the author of numerous books on Catholic spirituality. She writes about the spiritual journey on her blog, Not Strictly Spiritual, and in her monthly column, Life Lines.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INIATION

OF ADULTS RCIA What is RCIA? - In 1988, the Catholic Bishops of the United States directed that adults becoming Catholics do so by a unique faith formation process called RCIA. It has also been adapted for children (over the age of seven) and for teens.

Why Year-Round RCIA? - RCIA is truly a year-round process which begins for you when YOU decide you want to explore the Catholic faith. The RCIA group engages in thoughtful preparation for the Sacraments. It is your opportunity to “feast” on the richness of the Word of God—the Bible– and the treasury of the Catholic faith—all traditions centuries old yet still vibrant today. You will learn a different way of living and our prayer is that through the RCIA process, you will come to embrace Catholicism as your way of life.

Sounds Great! When Can I Start? - you can begin the jour-ney towards the Catholic Sacraments any time during the year. Interested? Please email Lu Doyle, [email protected] for more information.
