4 A MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
DIOCESE OF TUCSON ONLINE NEWS LINK
Dear Parishioners of Saint Augustine Cathedral,
August is a very especial month for our community, we celebrate our Cathedral and Diocesan patron, Saint Augustine, his mother Saint Monica, and our own Blessed Mother Mary. Before celebrating the Feast of Saint Monica and Saint Augustine, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption and Queenship of Mary. As we celebrate these beautiful Marian feasts, we remember that “what Mary is, the Church desires to be” it is that perfect union that Mary has with her son, Our Lord Jesus Christ that we desire to obtain.
On November 1st, 1950, Pope Pius XII in his Bull Munificentissimus Deus defined the Assumptions of Mary as a Dogma of the Catholic Church. This dogma of the Assumption of Mary affirms that Mary’s body was glorified after her death. For all of us, this moment of the resurrection of the body will come at the end of the world, but for Mary, the moment of glorification of soul and body came immediately after death, anticipating our future, hence we proclaim “what Mary is, the Church desires to be”.
In Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII states: “From the universal agreement of the Church’s ordinary magisterium we have a certain and firm proof demonstrating that the Blessed Virgin Mary’s bodily assumption into heaven…is a truth revealed by God and therefore should be firmly and faithfully believed by all the children of the church” (Munificentissimus Deus: AAS42 [1950], 757). The fact that Mary was immediately taken to heaven in soul and body shows the perfect union that Mary had with her son Jesus Christ. This perfect union manifested from the moment of Mary’s participation in her Son’s mission to the moment of her participation in her son’s redemptive sacrifice, and therefore culminating in her participation with Jesus after death. Perfect union with Jesus in life and heavenly destiny, in body and soul.
This weekend in the Cathedral, we celebrate some of our First Holy Communions, it is a moment that reflects the spirit of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. These children will receive Our Lord in the most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist and their soul will experience a beautiful union with Jesus. Do you remember when you received Our Lord in the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the very first time? In what church did you receive him? What priest gave you First Holy Communion? Do you remember the date? This day will be a very especial day for these children, a moment that will foreshadow the ultimate and eternal union with Jesus, a union with Jesus that we all desire, “what Mary is, the Church desires to be.”
Let us pray for these children that will celebrate their First Holy Communion in this month of August, the month of Saint Augustine, Saint Monica, and of Our Blessed Mother Mary.
St. Augustine, Pray for us.
St. Monica, Pray for us.
Mary Queen assumed into heaven, Pray for us.
In Christ,
Rev. Alan Valencia Rector

DO YOU WISH TO REGISTER IN THE PARISH?Often people may attend Mass for several years, but never register. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of St. Augustine Cathedral Parish community. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for weddings, infant baptism, school or religious education registration, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings and emails.
Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. St. Augustine Cathedral Parish accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. However, the Diocese of Tucson advises that you may only choose one parish as your home parish. You may be active at as many parishes as you would like, but please choose only one parish as your home parish which will be your parish of registration.
In order to register at St. Augustine Cathedral Parish, you need to complete a registration form. Come fill out a registration form during office hours or bring it back filled. We welcome you to register!
Have you Moved?Do you have a new address, phone number or family change? Updating this information helps us serve the parish more effectively and saves on the cost of returned postage. If you wish to update, continue or discontinue your registration, please call the Parish Office at 520-623-6351.
