Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this prayer for our sick brothers and sister whom you have redeemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER
The Two-Fold Character of Lent
I have said before that I like the season of Advent more than any other liturgical season: not because of all the hype in anticipation of the joyful Christ-mas celebration, but because Advent very well represents the whole life of the believer—one of longing and of waiting. Having said that, we know that the Len-ten season is also of great importance, as the Church goes into the depth of the Paschal Mystery of the dying and rising of Christ. Today as we begin the season of Lent, I would like to borrow some ideas from the late Jesuit Walter Burghardt, professor of patristic theology and a spiritual author to whom I have been greatly indebted.
I must say that for a lot of Catholics and non-Catholics alike, Lent is a season of ashes and lashes, of giving up chocolates and cookies, of abstinence, etc. These concepts have been drilled into our minds. While we see a good deal of merit in these, we also have to reexamine the deeper meaning of Lent. In one of his reflections, Fr. Burghardt speaks of the two-fold character of Lent: namely that it is not time for pretending. On the one hand, some people may incorrectly pretend that in this season, Jesus is NOT alive; that we have to wait until Easter to experience his resurrection. This is so far from the truth. We believe that Jesus is always alive, even on Good Friday when the Church celebrates the fullness of his passion and death. And with Jesus, we are also “risen” Christians. This should control the way we fast and do penance: we have to do so with a joyful spirit… On the other hand, we cannot pretend that Lent does NOT exist either. In other words, we cannot just “fast-forward” Lent as if it does not really matter. Even though we ultimately look forward toward Easter Sunday, Christians also have to journey with Jesus on his way to Jeru-salem—the cross. We are to walk on this journey not only liturgically and symbolically, but also in our flesh and bones, and in the depth of our spirits.
This insight from Walter Burghardt really gives me a new, or “renewed,” understanding of the season of Lent. And with that, we have to raise the question: is Lent really a season for laughing or crying, of joy or of sorrow, of death or of resurrection, etc.? To be truly “Catholic,” it is not a question of either/or, but of both/and. I would say that in ex-treme cases where one has to choose between good and evil, of course, the answer is not both/and. But in many other situations in life, to be Catholic (or universal) the answer is both/and. For example, sometimes in life our individual conscience is in conflict with the teachings of the Church. Which shall we go with? The Catholic answer: not either/or, but both conscience and Church teaching. A well (in)formed Catholic should try his/her best to reconcile the two… An-yway, coming back to Lent: it is about both death and resurrection, both sorrow and joy, etc. Jesus has reconciled to world to the Father through his death and resurrection. As children of God, we are to walk with Jesus joyfully in this season of Lent, through his passion and death, so that we may come to his resurrection!
