Pidiendo ayuda

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

T he pilgrim experience of going by foot to San ago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle,

with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the o en primi ve lodging facili es are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to bap ze the na ons. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some peo‐ple take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beau ful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gra tude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys. —James Field, Copyright ©

DSA: Our Status ‐ no change... While regular monthly pledges have been processed regularly (thank you!) new dona ons have leveled off and not been com‐ing in for a few weeks. As you can see from below, we have not met our goal for the year, and as you also know any shor all comes right out of our opera ng budget. There are so very many programs funded by the DSA that help our community, our brothers and sisters and ourselves, here at the parish level. Our parish has benefited directly from programs from Catholic Chari es Diocese of Charlo e and the Elder Ministry, to name a couple of examples. Please use the pledge card you received in the mail or simply go online (see link below) to make a contri‐bu on today!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society has contact‐ed Habitat for Humanity to request a rep‐resenta ve to come to our parish for an informa on session on applying for a Habi‐tat home. St. Barnabas has provided 'sweat' labor for many Habitat homes, as we volunteer each year (see separate ar cle about helping this year). Given the price of rent in our area, we thought there would be many families that would be interested in home ownership at very affordable prices. Habitat offers 2‐4 bed‐room homes in safe communi es, ideal for raising children. Currently Habitat is building in the Candler area. Both homes and townhomes are available.

The informa on session would explain the steps you would need to take toward ownership. Habitat offers no interest, no down payment loans with affordable mortgage payments. If you apply and are not accepted, they will send a le er sta ng the reasons, and offer you the op on of re‐applying at a future me if you have resolved the issues leading to non‐acceptance. There is no limit on the numbers of mes you can apply.

We are looking at several dates on which this approximate‐ly one hour informa on session might happen: Saturdays: August 10, 17, or 31. September 7 or 14. There is a sign‐up sheet in the social hall. If you wish to come, please list your name and put a check mark in any/all of the days you WOULD be available. We will then compile the list and schedule the Saturday (morning, probably), that the most people can a end.

Your Vincen ans

Connec ng with everyday life: Many Catholics express difficulty in knowing how to pray. Most can relate to the disciples who asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Today, invite your people to turn to God with an open and prayerful spirit. You might lead them in a brief guided reflec‐

on, or invite them to set aside me for prayer each day in the coming week. Perhaps share this quote from C.S. Lewis with them: “I pray because I'm helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the me, waking and sleeping. It doesn't change God. It changes me.”

No cambia a Dios. Me cambia a mí”.

Pro‐Life Answers to False Pro‐Choice Arguments (Part VIII)

"Abor on is necessary because there are already

thousands of children wai ng to be adopted".

The chances of a newborn baby not being adopted are ex‐

tremely small, regardless of race or circumstances. The prob‐

lem in adop on is not babies, but older children (many of

whom are not legally

adoptable) who come into

the adop on system long

a er their birth.

When the abor on indus‐

try tries to jus fy abor ng

children by saying there

are children who are not

ge ng adopted, they are

talking about two sepa‐

rate and unrelated groups

of children. The interes ng thing is that the children they

want to abort are the ones who are the easiest to place for

adop on and therefore, not part of the problem.

The pro‐choice posi on is, "We have a group of children

over here (older and already born children) who are difficult

to place for adop on, so let's kill this other group over here

(unborn babies) who are extremely easy to place." This argu‐

ment is plainly absurd and indefensible!

How is a 14 year old girl who needs a loving home helped by

killing an unborn baby? Abor ng a totally unrelated group of

children who are not hard to place will not help her a bit.

Pro‐aborts o en counter that if the people who want to

adopt babies could not do so, they might adopt these older

children already in the system.

It would be hard to imagine a more repugnant form of extor‐

on that this argument. What they are really saying is, "In

order to make adop ve parents take the older children we

think they should adopt, we will slaughter the babies they

want to adopt". Few statements speak be er to their moral

bankruptcy than that one!

Respuestas Pro‐Vida a falsos argumentos Pro‐Elección (parte VIII)

Sacred Music: What Is It and Why Do We Care? There is no more divisive component of any church than the style of worship that is offered and fostered within the litur‐gy. There are no more places of misun‐derstanding and openness to opinion than sacred art and music. Within these two facets lies the poten al to alter one’s grasp and experience of the sacred mys‐teries of Holy Mass.

The very word sacred holds the implica‐on of being set above the secular which

is temporal or profane. Sacred music ex‐ists purposely for use within the Church and her liturgies, and as with all things Church there is an authority that helps us to define, and therefore use as a guide, what we should sing.

Both Popes St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI urged the reform of sacred music in the liturgy because it is not only one of our oldest treasures, it also helps us to transcend past the secular into the heaven‐ly realm. Why does sacred music need reforming? Here are some common statements every music director hears:

I like upbeat music and need Mass to li me up. Music and emo on go hand in hand. However, we can‐not use emo on as criterion for what is sacred. If this were the case, my opinion would be just as valid as any‐one else’s. It also takes us away from what is truly im‐portant: the text.

I prefer contemporary songs and hymns because it is what we know. Contemporary music is truly a good thing and both S. JPII and BXVI encouraged the wri ng of contemporary music suitable for the liturgy. However, what is o en meant by

this term “contemporary” is music composed from 1970‐1985 or so. Because these compo‐si ons are rooted in secularity they are truly “temporary,” as they appeal only to a par c‐ular group of a par cular age and do not stand the test of me. The ancient hymns and chants live on, somewhat because of style, but mostly because of the text.

What do the words ma er, I like the sound and style. Singing at Mass comes from the ancient tra‐di on of singing the Psalms and other biblical texts. The Sacred has become infiltrated with secular texts, so much that the average person cannot tell the difference any‐more. One example that comes to mind is

the song: “The Lord of the Dance.” This hymn has no biblical basis and is heresy. Because the tune is catchy and people like it, our brains shut down and accept it as Sacred. Secular means “outside the temple” and certain‐ly this song and many other popular di es should remain so.

Holy Mass is a prayer from beginning to end. The goal for Sacred Music, or anything at Mass should never be “me” but always a focus on God as we work to conform our lives to Him. The Mass is our foretaste of the Heavenly Liturgy; let us give our absolute best to God! Sacred Music is no excep on!
