THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

CHANGING LIVES FOREVER PROGRAM WE NEED YOU

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers a free program to individu-als in Poverty who want to Change their Lives for the better and leave poverty. This program involves a commitment to attend a three-hour session each week for 18 weeks with 13 other people. Supplies are provided.

Currently there are 5 parishes in Indianapolis with a total of 65 people developing spe- cific plans to change their lives. For this program to be successful we des- perately need volunteers to be MEN- TORS to those asking for support after they graduate in early summer.

Think about becoming a Mentor to some-one who has worked hard for 18 weeks to develop a plan to improve their life and only needs your advice six hours per month (you set the times) for one year. It only takes 4 hours to be trained. For further information about becoming a Men-tor in the Changing Lives Program, call either :

Joe Doll, 317-919-1419 ([email protected]) or Domoni Rouse, Dir of Changing Lives, 317-985-2149 Ext 219

([email protected])

VOCATION PRAYERS - Our monthly prayers for vocations to the priesthood and religious life will be held on Monday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Barnabas. Deacon Jerry Matthews will lead the rosary, fol-lowed by some prayers, a homily and end-ing with Benediction. After several seminar-

ians have left, it is more important then ever that we beg God to send holy Apostles to His Church and that they an-swer His call.

On Monday, May 14, we will gather by 11:45am in St. Barnabas Hall for an afternoon of Euchre, refreshments and good company. All are welcome and remember that we play every month except July when St. Barnabas shuts down for cleaning. If you have questions, I will be glad to answer them. Call me at 317-881-7464. Director of Youth Ministry

St. Barnabas Catholic Church, a 1300+ family community on the southside of Indianapolis, IN is seeking a full-time pasto-ral, creative, relationship-driven, and dynamic Director of Youth Ministry to serve alongside our youth, parents, and members of the parish. This position will continue to strengthen existing ministries for middle school and high school youth; coordinate Confirmation preparation; and pro-vide a pastoral presence to our parish school and public school students.

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in The-ology or comparable field or at least 3 years of youth min-istry experience. Applicants should also have strong organi-zational skills, written and verbal communication skills, and should be fluent in the latest technological trends. The appli-cant must have the ability to coordinate and work well with volunteers and exhibit good leadership skills. Review of applications will begin immediately.

Please direct inquiries and/or your cover letter, resume, and list of references, in confidence, by email to Meg Horcher at [email protected] by May 25, 2018.

Dear Parish Family,

After much prayer, discernment, and reflection I have come to the decision to step down from my position as Director of Youth Ministry for St. Barnabas parish. I have accepted an opportunity to study for my Master's degree in ministry. I will be pursuing a Master's of Divinity degree and a certificate in Spirituality and Social Change at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA beginning this Fall. My husband, Preston, and I will be re-locating to the San Francisco Bay Area this August.

I am very excited about this opportunity to continue to grow in my spirituality, formation as a lay minister, and as a per-son. I feel very called to study at PSR (Pacific School of Religion) to continue down the path where I feel the Holy Spirit is leading me. However, I am also deeply sad to say goodbye to this very special parish community. I feel grateful, humbled, and privileged to have had the opportunity to serve alongside each of you these last three years. I will treasure my time here, but more importantly, I will treasure the relationships I have formed with so many of you. Thank you for trusting me, for loving me, and caring for me.

I plan to stay in my position here at Barnabas until the beginning of August and will attend the summer mission trip to New Orleans and lead our summer youth ministry programming. We are beginning a search committee for our next youth minister. Please begin to pray for this person (whoever he/she may be). I know that they will walk into a community who will accept them with open arms and hearts the way you have done for me.

Finally, St. Barnabas will always be my home. I love this parish and always have. It has been a true honor to give back to a community who gave me so much when I was a young person here growing up. I see this not so much as a “goodbye,” but more of a “See you later! Talk soon!” Please be assured of my continued prayers for each of you and for our parish commu-nity. Love, Mary Kate Becker

KAIROS MINISTRY

Thanks to all of you for the generous financial support, given through the Outreach Commission for the

Kairos Prison Ministry!

We are also grateful for the many dozens of cookies made by over 100 St. Barnabas parishioners. The men truly appreciat-ed the tasty treats.

But most importantly, we thank you for the prayers offered for the success of this weekend; that God will help the men overcome the challenges they face in the hostile environment in which they live.

HOOP NEWS We fed many hungry friends who seemed especially hun-

gry tonight! After each outing, I try to share an experience that has touched us that night as we feed the homeless. We drive to the various homeless camps around the city and offer food, water, clothing, blankets, conversation and pray-er. Often, we will find someone sleeping in an alley, under a bridge, or in a doorway. We will stop and simply ask, are you hungry? Would you like some-thing to eat? Tonight, as were driving along South Street, Don spotted a man lying under the underpass. He pulled over and I jumped out and asked, "Are you hungry?"

The man popped up with a smile on his face and said, " Am I glad to see you! All the trash cans from here to Market Street have already been raid-ed! And, I'm not kidding I checked."

Well, what do you say to that? Speechless, we gave him a large cup of beef vegetable soup, a couple of sandwiches, water and a bag of snacks. The man thanked us over and over. So to those lovely ladies, Helen Kanter, Mary Jaffe, Connie Schmidt, Ruth Schaefer and Caroline , God bless you for preparing the soup and sandwiches for our outing tonight. It was truly enjoyed by so many.

Thanks also to the 2nd graders at St. Barnabas School who prepared the boun-tiful blessing bags along with the handmade cards. What a treat!

Thanks to all who are Christ to our homeless brothers and sisters. Please keep them in your prayers. Questions about helping with HOOP contact Don/Karen Beckwith [email protected]

PRAYER FRIENDS' DINNER Our annual dinner will be held in the Banquet Room of MCL at 3630 S East Street on Thursday, June 7th at 6:30 p.m. This is open to all ladies of the parish, regardless of age. We draw a name and secretly pray for that lady throughout the year as well as send-ing notes or cards. At the dinner, we celebrate all of our birthdays with a modest gift for the lady we have been praying for. We then draw a new name for the following year. Judy Hirschle at 317-881-6417 and I at 317-881-7464 will be happy to take your phone reservation or e-mail me at [email protected]. I f you leave a message, be sure we confirm your reserva-tion. You may join even if you can't make the dinner but really would encourage everyone to attend the dinner so your Prayer Friend can see who you are if she doesn't know you. Res-ervations are due by Tuesday, May 29, but if possible, please get them in earlier. For ques-tions, please give one of us a call. Hope to see you. Ceil Woodard
