Rumors had been fly-ing for weeks. WasBruno Magras going torun in the territorialelections in March, ornot? On the anniver-sary of his first electionto the municipal coun-cil on January 11,1976, Magras made ashort speech on theradio and put an end to

the rumors. “I chosethis date to announcemy decision not tosolicit your votes in thenext territorial elec-tions,” he confirmed.“To those who are dis-appointed by this deci-sion, I offer my sincereapologies. To thosewho are rejoicing, Iwish them all my bestfor their success.”

Now the big questionis who will take hisplace? Yves Gréaux,Magras’ first deputyvice president, pennedan “op-ed” piece in therecent UMP newsletterstating: “All those whotruly love SaintBarthélemy have a newchallenge ahead,” heasserted. A few hoursafter Magras made hisannouncement, Gréauxwas clear about hisintentions: “I am at thedisposition of the Col-lectivity and the citi-zens of Saint Barthéle-my if called upon.”The second name oneveryone’s lips is thatof Michel Magras,Bruno’s younger broth-er, currently thirddeputy vice president

and senator. If the dou-ble role of senator andpresident of the Collec-tivity is allowed, wouldMichel Magras acceptthe increased round-trips between the Sen-ate in Paris and SaintBarthélemy?

Stepping down after 12years as top dog,Magras has left thedoor wide open. Whenwe went to press, onlytwo lists were official:“Tous pour Saint-Barth” led by BenoitChauvin, oppositionmember of the currentgovernment, and“Saint-Barth Bleue etVerte,” a group includ-ing Didier Bensa andEmmanuel Jacques thatthrew its hat in the ringon January 9 at theWall House. Otherpossible candidatesinclude territorialcouncil membersMaximes Desouchesfrom the list “Action-E q u i l i b r e - T r a n s -parence,” and KarineMiot-Richard from“Tous Unis Pour Saint-Barthélemy.”

Bruno Magras Not A CandidateIn March Elections

Alice, Barbara,Donna: Thenames of lovely

ladies, yet also thoseattributed to devastatinghurricanes. In the 1950s,when hurricanes startedgetting official names,American Army andNavy meteorologistsoften named them aftertheir wives or girlfriends(after a series with oddnames such as Dog orJig). In 1979, men’snames were added to themix as well (due to thefeminist movement per-haps?). As of this week,Espace Météo Caraïbes(on the road above Gus-

tavia) presents an exhibiton tropical hurricanesorganized by the Inter-Regional AntillesGuyana Office (DRIAG)of Météo France. Thisinformative exhibitincludes approximately20 panels, illustrated withsatellite images, explain-ing how these quite dan-gerous climatic eventsform and evolve, fromtheir physical qualities tohow the winds swirlwithin them. The exhibitalso places an accent onthe history of hurricanesin the local area, with amap tracing their trajec-tories. From 1956 to

2006, the NorthernIslands were hit by 31hurricanes; less thanGuadeloupe which wassubject to 87 suchstorms. “But the North-ern Islands are more vul-nerable to the largest ofthese phenomena,”explains Yann Gréaux, director of Espace MétéoCaraïbes. The mostrecent hurricane here wasEarl, whose path took itjust 32 miles to the northof St Barthélemy inAugust 2010. But thestrongest hurricanes tohit the island, such asLuis in 1995, Donna in

1960, or Dog in 1950,have not been forgotten. The list of 21 namesrotates each six years (aname is replaced if astorm takes lives), so if ahurricane knocks at ourdoors in the coming sea-son, it could be calledAlberto, Florence, Kirk,or Valerie…

Espace Météo Caraïbes,Gustavia: Free exhibit, open Monday-Friday,8am-12pm, plus from2:30-4:30pm on Thursday. Through February 29.

Tourists in transit for SaintBarth lost in Sint Maarten? The Saint Barth Tourism

Committee (CTTSB) is doingsomething about it… by mid-February a welcome desk will beput into place at Princess JulianaAirport, on the neighboringisland of Saint Martin. Locatedafter immigration, near thecheck-in counters in the baggagehall, the welcome desk will helppassengers on the way to SaintBarth find their way without dif-ficulty. “The welcome desk isespecially useful for those goingby boat,” explains Inès Choisy, director of the CTTSB. “Manypassengers don’t know if theyneed to get the boat at Marigot orOyster Pond. And there is noth-ing at the airport to help themfind out.” The creation of a wel-come desk at Juliana Airport is

something thatthe tourism industry in SaintBarth has wanted to establish forquite some time, as it will alsooffer information about theisland’s hotels and restaurants. Atthe same time, thanks to newimmigration cards at Juliana Air-port, the CTTSB will have accessto more complete data about itsclientele. Regina Labega, head ofthe Sint Maarten tourist office, responded favorably to the

CTTSB’srequest for the welcome desk. The project, which began to takeshape last June, might eventuallycomprise four desks, as SintMaarten, Saint Martin, andAnguilla are considering takingpart as well. In the meantime, theSaint Barth welcome desk will beup and running. Constructionbegins in early February.

With the 28th edition ofthe St Barth Music Festi-val well underway, thereare some exciting eventson the horizon. The firstweek featured the usualroster of all-star musi-cians playing andsinging together at oneof the most unusual fes-tivals in the world. ButFrances Debroff, festivaldirector, still has sometricks up her sleeve. Thebiggie is the free rockconcert on the dock, Sat-urday, January 21 at7pm. One might ask

what a rock concert isdoing on the schedulefor a classical music fes-tival, but since the pro-gram includes jazz andballet, well why not? Soin typical festival styleit’s not just any rockband, but a group of allstars featuring BradWhitford of Aerosmithon guitar, along withRuss Irwin on keyboards(who has played withAerosmith, Sting, BryanAdams…); Johnny Lang(Grammy Award-win-ning American blues, gospel, and rock musi-cian from the Jimi Hen-drix Experience); ScottNelson (bass, guitar andkeyboards who hasplayed with ZZ Top andWillie Nelson); anddrummer Chris Layton(who played with StevieRay Vaughan). You’dhave to ask DeBroff howshe lined up such a band, but they here with roadmanager Donny Wight-man and guitar tech/pro-duction supervisor MarcoMoine, working with

Alex Bendahan, the festi-val’s senior sound techni-cian and recording engi-neer, who is also collabo-rating with the SaintBarth Film Festival toproduce a documentaryon the island’s traditionalmusic. Production valuesshould be high with a rigfrom Storm Lighting andEric Masson’s profes-sional sound gear(including a YamahaM7CL digital console).“This gear will allow areally cool mix,” saysBendahan. “The concept

is for a full, clean mix,but not offensively loud.We have enough equip-ment to make this hap-pen.” The band is expect-ed to play a two-hour setincluding 20 songs fromthe various bands repre-sented. The Saint BarthHarmony Music Schoolwill open the concert, which is part of the festi-val’s endowment cam-paign, whose goal is toraise 7.5 million dollarsto ensure the future of thefestival. Now that’s look-ing ahead.
