31ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In the Gospel Jesus ends by saying, “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." We currently live in a world that is more about ‘self’ than ever before. As a culture, we are influenced to make decisions based on our own benefit. We have technology that inflates focus on our self: selfies, snap chat, etc. This self-centered world is opposite of God’s image that we were created in and what Jesus teaches us. As we consider this, Fr. Slavko, a Croatian Capuchin, who held a PhD. in psychology stated that mental health begins with serving others and mental illness begins with serving ourselves. Another way of saying this is that by helping others we improve our mental health. The prayer attributed to St. Francis is the best summary of being Mentally Healthy and at the same time living the Gospel. Pray the prayer daily so it becomes part of your way of life and you remain healthy mentally and live as the best disciple of Jesus.

Christ the King feast day is November 26. Last year we did something new. Instead of an afternoon Holy Hour, we had two shorter Adoration and devotion times between the morning Masses, from 9:15 – 10:50 and from 11:15 – 11:50. We will be doing the same thing this year. Please pray about staying after the 8:00 AM Mass or coming early for the 10:00 AM Mass, or staying after the 10:00 AM Mass, or coming early for the 12:00 noon Mass and participating in the devotions as we honor Christ as our King. Olive Wood Sales –November 26 – same day as Christ the King. The organization “Land of Peace” visits us every year with their hand carved items from Olive Wood from the Holy Land. This is the only income and support of many Christians in the Holy Land. They will also speak briefly about the Christian situation in the Holy Land. Items include Crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries- all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. Since tourism has greatly declined, Christian families in the Holy Land, who depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. The goal of this mission is to build a Charitable Hospital in Bethlehem and help the poor and needy families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Sale of these goods will help them very much and also give you the opportunity to have “something” authentic from the Holy Land. For more information please see the Website: www.landofpeace.org and www.bcfmission.com. Please plan ahead to do some shopping for Christmas as well as supporting Christian families in the Holy Land.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Fake news information about Sacraments It seems this past year has been filled with a lot of fake news. There is gossip and fake information circling the parish which state that I will not do sacraments under certain situations and circumstances especially when it comes to baptisms and weddings. Do not listen to what you have heard. If you're planning on a baptism or wedding contact me or Deacon Mike and get the truth. From what I have heard in the last several weeks the information was completely false. Do not assume, ask for the truth. Do not listen to others, ask the clergy, or at least a staff member.

Amen to Action will be held on Friday, November 24-the day after Thanksgiving-from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. this event is aimed at providing 1 million meals for people who need them. Fr. Joe Mele is asking for volunteers. We can get a bus from our parish to make it easier, if we have enough people. Please contact Fr. Tony ASAP if you can help for this volunteer mission in conjunction with other denominations all around the area. We need 2,500 people, if we can get one bus load from here it would be awesome. Fr. Tony

TAIZE Wednesday, November 8th — 7:00 PM

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 7:00 PM we will have a Special Taize service in the Church. This service is an hour of adoration using the music originated by the monastic order in Taize, France. The songs are characterized by short, musical verses repeated for a meditative experience. Our service will consist of this reflective music, readings, a homily by Father Tony, a time of silent prayer, and reciting of the Lord’s Prayer, and concluding prayers. Please come, listen, and pray, in an environment that will help you draw nearer to the Lord.

Praying For Vocations This week, the Knechtel Family will be praying for vocations with the vocation kit. Please consider signing up and praying for more vocations to the religious life and priesthood.

45th ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER PRESENTED BY THE ST. BERNADETTE ATHLETIC

ASSOCIATION Sunday, November 19th, 2017

Please join us for a great meal with good friends at the annual Spaghetti Dinner and support the Athletic Programs for our St. Bernadette Students. The dinner is held in the Lourdes Center from 1:00—6:00 PM. All proceeds directly benefit our athletes who participate in Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, Track, Cheerleading and Volleyball. Please contact Jill Vovaris at (724) 757-6210 or via email at [email protected] for tickets.

Parking recently yellow lines and signs were added to several areas of our property. I have noticed several people not obeying the no parking signs posted at the yellow lines. The yellow lines were added, and Noah took on this project because some areas prevent emergency vehicles from getting to where they need to be in the event of an emergency. This has happened in the past; and we have to ensure an area around all public buildings for emergency vehicles. Some areas also block in people that need to leave the property, or the priest on call for the hospital. I personally have had to approach people while I am in my Mass vestments and ask to have the car moved, as I watch them pull in, park and ignore the signs and lines. Due to the sever nature of this, if you are parked in any of these areas, you will be towed at your expense. I am sorry but this is for the safety and good of all.

Confirmation will be on November 18, 2017 at 10:00 AM, with Bishop Zubik. Therefore that Saturday there

will NOT BE an 8:30 AM Mass and NO CONFESSIONS.

St. Bernadette School Mission Statement St. Bernadette Catholic School is a Roman Catholic elementary school serving students in Pre-K through Grade 8. Inspired in faith and rooted in Gospel values, St. Bernadette, as a ministry of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, is dedicated to excellence in Catholic education. In partnership with each family, neighboring parish and faith community, our principal, faculty and staff endeavor to instill in each child a life-long commitment to learning, service to others and trust in God. St Bernadette’s provides the foundation for each child to grow in spiritual development, wisdom, faith and integrity in order to prepare them to meet any future challenges.

ADORATION Saint Faustina, who was known for sharing Christ’s message of

Divine Mercy with the world, wrote about her deep love and devotion to the Holy Eucharist on various occasions. “I adore

You, Lord and Creator, hidden in the Most Blessed Sacrament,” the saint once wrote. “I adore You for all the works of Your hands that reveal to me so much wisdom, goodness and mercy, O Lord.

You have spread so much beauty over the earth and it tells me about Your beauty, even though these beautiful things are but a faint reflection of You, incomprehensible Beauty. And although You have hidden Yourself and concealed Your beauty, my eye, enlightened by faith, reaches You and my soul recognizes its

Creator, its Highest Good, and my heart is completely immersed in prayer of adoration.”

“The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white

host.” Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

“In that little Host is the solution to all the problems of the world.”
