From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
What does it take to be a disci-ple of Jesus? A couple of weeks ago, we learned it takes disci-pline, a word derived from the same Latin root, disciplina, which means teaching or in-struction. A new school year
has just begun for many of us. What an appropriate time to act as a student. Ea-ger to learn what it takes to follow the Lord. Beginning this weekend all masses will be celebrated in the church. Once more I want to express my gratitude toward those who helped in organizing the sum-mer mass arrangement. Many partici-pants of Fearon Hall mass were very happy to have it in an air-conditioned place. On this Sunday at 10:30 mass we cele-brate a liturgy for our Religious Educa-tion Program. Vacation is ended, and new RE year begins. I’m very grateful to all involved in the RE Program here at St. Bernardine. Your faith and willing-ness of sharing it with our students in-spire me and, I think, many others of our parishioners. We keep all of you in our prayers. September is the month when all parish groups, ministries and councils begin the new year of their service. If you recog-nize yourself as potential member of any (for example, of a choir) don’t hesitate to
offer your talents to enrich this particu-lar ministry. The second collection this weekend will be taken for our St. Vincent de Paul So-ciety. Thank you for your generosity. Father Rob Irwin has successfully ac-complished his study at Loyola Hospital and is preparing for his trip back home. I have enjoyed very much Rob staying at the rectory, and surely he will be missed. I would like to thank Fr. Rob for provid-ing services here at St. Bernardine at the time of my vacation. May God bless you in your new assignment as a chaplain in the biggest hospital in Boise, Idaho. Af-ter Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass there will be a simple farewell reception in the con-vent dining room. Once again, thank you Fr. Rob and God bless you! Hospitality weekends resume, beginning next weekend (September 14th & 15th) in the convent dining room. The SVDP Society has been active dur-ing the past several weeks. The pantry has been open on Saturday mornings in
the Rectory basement, and we have been bringing food to the Little Free Pantry at the Forest Park Library sev-eral times each week. Currently, the food pantry is in need of cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, coffee, jam and jelly, peanut butter, meat products (Spam®, beef stew, hash, etc.), water, toilet paper, paper towels, canned fruit, and just about anything you can spare as long as it is not out of date. On occasion, we have to purchase items that we run out of, so we can al-ways use cash. You can put an enve-lope in the regular Sunday collection made out to St. Vin-cent de Paul. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its iden-tity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its voca-tion. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians cele-brate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weav-ing together three separate layers of prayers: a litur-gy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assem-bly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gor-geous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catho-lics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will con-tinue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occa-sional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to co-ordinate youth sports with adult commit-ments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. RESPECT LIFE Planned Parenthood and other abortion
businesses have made billions of dollars by mar-keting that the “services” they offer protect women’s health. The truth? Their services often harm women physically and psychologically and drive down standards for women’s healthcare.
Abortion facilities have received citations for dispensing abortion pills after the expiration date; reusing unsanitary sponges for several days to clean instruments; failing to disinfect or re-move blood stains from patient tables between abortions; employing abortionists who do not have admitting privileges at local hospitals and thus can’t provide adequate patient care in an emergency; and allowing frozen blood and fetal matter to build up in freezers—among other vio-lations. Hair and nail salons are held to higher standards and tougher regulation of their ser-vices by state licensing agencies!
A callous, cost-cutting measure recently in-vented by the abortion industry facilitates abor-tions by eliminating in-person consultations. Via webcam, an abortionist would have a brief online “chat” with the mother and then press a remote button dispensing drugs that cause an abortion. If she has complications after taking the drugs, the woman has no doctor to turn to for help. A graphic depiction of at-home drug-induced abortion was part of Abby Johnson’s exposé film, “Unplanned,” and proved unequiv-ocally that “do-it-yourself “is a psychologically and physically scarring experience with no sem-blance to real healthcare.

THE SACRISTY The sacristy (also called "vestry") of a church is the room where vestments, vessels and oils are stored. Our church has two rooms for this purpose, one to the south of the altar and one behind the altar. In addition to the vestments worn by the priests and altar servers, our rooms contain seats and kneelers, pews, closets for vases and choir robes, missals, candles, incense and other items used in the church over the years. Some of the items, like the Holy Communion patens and altar bells, are no longer used during the Mass.

September National HIV/AIDS Ethnic Awareness Days Did you know that an estimated 40,000 new HIV infections occur every year in the U.S.? It is estimated that 15 to 20% of persons living with the virus DO NOT KNOW that they are infected. If you do not know that you are infected with HIV, you could be spreading the virus to others. The only way to know if you are infected is to get tested. September 18th marks National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Although the num-ber of deaths from AIDS is decreasing, the number of new infections and the number of persons living with AIDS are rising. Among the population groups increasingly at risk for HIV infection are those 50 years and older. As these numbers increase, persons living with AIDS will face the daily challenges of living with the disease as well as the daily challenges of aging. September 27th marks National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show a sharp increase in the number of new infections among young (13-29) gay and bisexual men. Because of persistent and painful homophobia, stig-ma and discrimination people are afraid to be tested and seek treatment and health care. Free and confidential or anonymous testing is available in a community near you. This disease has NO CURE. There is NO Vaccine to prevent it, and it will NOT GO AWAY!!
