FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Fr.

Where Things Stand The latest report from the California State top official, Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, looks very promising. The outbreak is stabilizing, cases are going down, and also hospitalizations are on a downward trend. We are cautiously optimistic that sooner or later the restriction is lifted and we can go back to celebrating mass and other sacraments in the church.

As of now, we keep the current schedule of holding masses outdoor: 4:30 PM & 6PM (Spanish) on Saturday, and 10AM (Spanish) & 12NN on Sunday. The weekday masses are non‐congregational; there is NO in‐person attendance. However, starting in September, we may have Spanish mass on Tuesday (9AM), provided we get at least 20 attendees, and enough help to manage the safety protocols.

The parish is now open for baptism. You can read more about it in the announcement section of the bulletin. Earlier, the confirmation date has been fixed on October 3, Saturday at 10AM & 12NN. This week or early next week, we will decide the dates of First Communion masses.

We will have a virtual festival in October. Performances will be pre‐recorded and uploaded on social media for our viewing. Masses will be celebrated outdoor to accommodate more attendees while keeping the social distance.

Mayor Rico Medina plans to form a special committee to advise him on racial equality issues. He asked me to choose someone to represent the parish, preferably from the Polynesian group. So I asked the Tongan leaders Finau and Pava and they both endorsed Kalini Piutau. She is a long‐time parishioners, a former Lataki leader, current catechist and officer of the Sacred Heart Tongan Women’s Group. She is knowledgeable, good communicator, passionate in what she does and exudes confidene. She will represent us well. This is all for now. To keep abreast of news and parish happenings, kindly share your email addresses so you can be included in the Flocknote mailing list.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION / SU CONTRIBUCION August 15th & August 16th

We are grateful for your consistent financial support each Sunday. Please remember us in prayer & offering even when you cannot be present.

Catechism Corner by Kacey Carey , DRE Without Christ's establishment of Peter as the first pope , we would not have a Church hierarchy. Jesus gave Peter a unique position of preeminence among the apostles, making him the ultimate authority in the early Church. The Pope is the source and guarantor of the Church's unity. He has the supreme pastoral and final authority in doctrinal and disciplinary decisions. This is one reason many of our Protestant brothers and sisters left the Church , preferring to be their "own pope", deciding what was morally acceptable or not. The fallacy of this argument is that no one can say "their" interpretation is the correct one. So Christ leaving the ultimate decision of Church dogma to the papacy insured a continued internal reference point for the fledgling Catholic Church. The Bishop of Rome, watches over the transmission of the true faith when speaking Ex cathedra, or from the chair of Peter. This infallible doctrine only applies to matters of faith and morals, not to a Pope's personality, character or background. But an ultimate authority is necessary to eliminate multiple interpretations and disagreements as seen in the 30,000 off shoots of Protestantism. Every Christian community had to agree with Rome upon the standard for the true, complete and unadulterated apostolic faith. To this day every Bishop of Rome has been, like Peter, the supreme shepherd of the Church, whose real Head is Christ. "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:13-20

Mateo 16: 13-20
