Do you like to sew? Come join us on Saturday, May 16 at 10:30 AM (lunch provided) in the Parish Hall when we will be making cheerful pillowcases to be donated to local children who are in the hospital. Bring your sewing ma-chine, iron, ironing board, pins, scissors, thread, cutting mats and/or fabric and join us in starting our "Miles of Smiles" event. Don't sew? You are welcome to come and join us - there are many jobs that need to be done such as cutting, pinning, ironing and folding. Or you can help by donating fabric, white thread or cash to purchase ma-terials. Each pillowcase takes 3/4 yard of cotton novelty print and 1/3 yard of a coordinating color for the trim. For more information about the organization, and and directions for making the pillowcases, go to www.conkerrcancer.org. For more information about the local event, contact Judy Holden 451-3424 or email [email protected]

My dear sisters and brothers, As we approach the solemnity of the Ascension next Sunday, our gospel takes us to the Upper Room where Jesus gave his “last will and testament” for those he would be leaving behind. They would not be orphans, but he would remain with him in their love for one another. We will cele-brate the solemnity of Pentecost. Jesus insures the efficacy of his last will and testament by his sending of the Spirit. Benedict XVI tells us that we evangelize more effectively by attraction than by proselytizing. What he means be this is that people will be attracted to the faith more readily by “how these Christians love one another” (words of an early non-Christian his-torian). In other words if we are a community of faith and caring, people will notice and will want to share in what we have. This is an obvious way of bringing about the “sharing Jesus” part of the Diocesan Plan. It will happen if we are “loving Jesus” and “serving Jesus”. This is all quite simple and basic in concept, yet it takes a great deal of effort to accomplish. Let us ask the Lord for the grace and the wherewithal to make it a reality in our faith community. Thus we will not be left orphans, but we will have Jesus with us and around us in the members of our community of faith.

With fond affection, Fr. Hank
