R E F L E X I Ó N (Quinto Domingo de Pascua )

Una de las frases más célebres de la novela histó-

rica Les Miserables es “Amar a otra persona es ver

el rostro de Dios”. Esto es lo que nos dice hoy el

Evangelio. Contemplar el rostro de Dios es el cielo,

porque esa es la eterna gloria y lo más alto a lo que

puede aspirer un ser humano. Contemplar el rostro

de Dios es la perfecta felicidad y lo mejor es que no

hay que esperar a morir para experimentarlo, porque

en la tierra ya tenemos el anticipo: amar a otros.

El protagonista de Les Miserables pasa por escla-

vitud, acusaciones falsas, maltrato, violencia, perse-

cución, innumerables injusticias y problemas; pero

ha visto el rostro de Dios encontrando su propia

identidad. “¿Quién soy?” Se pregunta una y otra

vez, ante las opciones morales que encuentra, como

hijo amado de Dios y como ser capaz de amar hasta

el sacrificio supremo por otras personas. Se entrega

arriesgando su propia vida por otros, perdona a

quien lo ha perseguido, ruega a Dios que tome su

vida, para que su hija adoptiva pueda ser feliz con el

hombre al que ama. Este hombre pudo amar a una

persona, porque recibió el amor de Dios primero.

Jesús dice en el Evangelio de hoy que el mayor

mandamiento es amar como hemos sido amados. Al

haber sido amados, se nos otorga el perdón y la ca-

pacidad de ser quienes estamos llamados a ser como

hijos amados de Dios; y, con esa nueva identidad,

somos capaces de amar a otros. Esta es precisamen-

te la salvación que nos viene a través de Cristo: el

sacarnos de nuestro propio pecado y limitación, no

importa lo grave que sea; el devolvernos a nuestra

identidad como hijos de Dios, creados a su imagen y

semejanza; y el permitirnos ver la gloria del rostro

de Dios en la tierra, por medio de nuestro amor a los

demás.

En Les Miserables, el protagonista hace increí-

bles sacrificios y heroicidades por amor a Dios y a

los demás. Quizá no se nos pidan tales actos heroi-

cos; pero el día a día nos trae pequeñas muertes y

pequeños sacrificios en que nos negamos a nosotros

mismos, para encontrarnos a nosotros mismos. En

todo eso podemos ver la luz del rostro de Dios, su

gloria. Sin lugar a dudas, son el cielo nuevo y la tie-

rra nueva que buscábamos; es la esperanza de nues-

tra redención.

TOTUS TUUS es un programa juvenil de verano

divertido y lleno de energía para todos los niños de

primaria, secundaria y preparatoria. El programa de

una semana de duración está dedicado a compartir el

Evangelio y promover la fe católica a través de la

evangelización, la catequesis, el testimonio cristia-

no, la música, las actividades, la adoración eucarísti-

ca y más.

La misión de Totus Tuus es inspirar en los jóvenes

un verdadero anhelo de santidad, un profundo deseo

de conversión diaria y una apertura a su vocación

desafiándolos constantemente a entregarse por com-

plete a Cristo a través de María y fortaleciendo con-

tinuamente sus vidas de oración imitándola a ella.

El programa de la escuela primaria está diseñado

para niños que ingresan de primero a sexto grado en

el próximo año escolar. Los niños se reunirán del

lunes 17 de junio al viernes 21 de junio de 9:00 am a

3:00 pm todos los días.

El Programa de secundaria superior y superior es

para jóvenes que ingresarán del 7º al 12º grado en el

próximo año escolar. Estos niveles de grado se reú-

nen cada noche del domingo 16 de junio al jueves

20 de junio de 7: 30-9: 45pm.

Los niños y jóvenes que participan en Totus Tuus no

solo aprenden más sobre su fe católica, sino que

también regresan a sus hogares emocionados de vi-

virlo y compartirlo.

CAMP RE-NEW-ALL

Camp Re-NEW-ALL, the summer camp program for the

Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, is taking appli-

cations for this summer. Camp is open to campers going

into 5th-9th grade in the fall, high school staff going into

10th-12th grade, and adult staff. Parents and grandparents

are invited to volunteer, too! Brochures are available on

VIRTUS TRAINING

The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau is com-

mitted to the protection of children and youth. We

believe strongly in our moral obligation to keep the

young safe and provide them with a caring environ-

ment in which their faith can flourish. The Diocese

of Springfield-Cape Girardeau requires that adults

who work with children in any capacity in the par-

ish, must take VIRTUS TRAINING.

Totus Tuus is coming to St. Canera Parish

June 16-21, 2019

TOTUS TUUS (Latin for Totally Yours) is a fun

and energetic summer youth program for all chil-

dren in elementary, middle school, and high school.

The week long program is dedicated to sharing the

Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through

evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness, music,

activities, Eucharistic worship, and more.

The Grade School Program is designed for chil-

dren entering first through sixth grades in the up-

coming school year. The children will meet Mon-

day, June 17 through Friday, June 21 from 9:00am

to 3:00pm each day.

The Junior High and Senior High Program is for

youth who will be entering the 7th through 12th

grades in the upcoming school year. These grade

levels meet each night Sunday, June 16 through

Thursday, June 20 from 7:30-9:45pm.

istration information, or contact Kevin Linehan or

the parish office.

Music practice is after

PSR classes on Sundays or

after Mass when there is no PSR.

And, on Tuesdays at 6:00 PM.

masses on May 25 and 26 in celebration of their

graduation. There will be a blessing of the gradu-

ates at all the masses that weekend.

loved you.”

5th SUNDAY OF EASTER

R E F L E C T I O N (The Fifth Sunday of Easter)

One of the most famous phrases in the historical

novel Les Miserables is “To love another person is

to see the face of God.” This is what today’s Gospel

tells us. To contemplate the face of God is heaven,

because it is eternal glory and the highest thing a

human being can aspire. To contemplate the face of

God is perfect bliss and the best thing is that you

don’t have to wait to die to experience this,

because we have a preview here on earth: loving

others.

The protagonist of Les Miserables endures slav-

ery, false accusations, abuse, violence, persecution,

countless injustices, and problems; but he had seen

the face of God, managing to find his own identity.

“Who am I?” He questions himself again and again,

when faced with the moral options he encounters,

as the beloved son of God and as a being capable of

loving up to the supreme sacrifice for other people.

He surrenders his own life for others, forgives the

one who persecuted him, prays to God to take his

life, so that his adoptive daughter could be happy

with the man she loves. This man could love a per-

son, because he first received the love of God.

Jesus says in today’s Gospel that this is the

greatest commandment: to love as we have been

loved. By having been love, we are granted the for-

giveness and the ability to become what we are

really called to be as beloved children of God; and,

with this new identity, we are able to love others.

This is precisely the salvation that comes to us

through Christ: getting us out of our own sin and

limitation, no matter how serious it is; giving us

back our identity as children of God, created in his

image and likeness; and allowing us to see the glory

of the face of God here on earth, through our love

of others.

In the story of Les Miserables, the protagonist

makes incredible sacrifices and heroics because of

his love for God and others. Perhaps we will not be

asked to perform such heroics; but the day-to-day

brings us small deaths and small sacrifices where

we deny ourselves, in order to find ourselves. In all

this, we can see the light from the face of God, his

glory. Without a doubt, it is the new heaven and

earth we were seeking; it is the hope of our redemp-

tion. This reflection was taken from Nuestra Parroquia.
