SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

God is great all the time, all the time, God is great!

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. FRANCISCO RIOS, PAROCHIAL VICAR…. This Sunday Luke presents to us the Sermon on the plain which has some similarities with Mat-thew’ Sermon on the Mount but also have some differences. Luke also presents the woes to those who have everything they want in this life and might not get anything in the life to come, because they live just for this life, not thinking of eternity. Also the first reading reminds us that our trust should be only in God not in our riches or in ourselves. This reading makes me think of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus; the rich man had everything and never paid attention to poor Laz-arus at his door. When they died Lazarus went to the bosom of Abraham and the rich man to the place of sufferings. Father Abraham said to the rich man remember that in your life you had everything and Lazarus had nothing, now he is enjoying eternal life and you are suffering. Let us pray that we will be guided by the Holy Spirit to use wisely the gifts that God has given us and set our hearts in the things that last for ever.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

One of the more troublesome characteristics of our human nature is the need for reinforcement. It is not enough to “know” that something is true, we need to see that truth from different angles. Scripture tells us the essential presence of God with which we, in our rational moments, certainly agree. But then life has a way of challenging us, precisely when what we know to be true (our creator God loves us, Jesus came to give us life in the full, all are God’s children, etc.) has to be expressed in the way we live. Speaking about our beliefs is a wonderful way to invite others to share our common heritage; but that operates at an intellectual level (not a bad level, but…). But to fully embrace our beliefs we need to live what they ask. Ah, there’s the catch; we can’t just profess our faith we must also express our faith by the way we live our call to follow Jesus, to love as he did by doing our best to do what we know our Christian faith asks of us. Today’s first reading from the prophet Jeremiah tells us that we are to trust in God, not just in human beings. He gives us more “angles” to interpret that call by a bush in the desert (trust only in mankind) and a tree by running water (trusting in the Lord). That vivid comparison makes it easier to see the significance of our choices. The reading from Luke today is called The Sermon on the Plain which is similar to Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. Besides the truth of each of the “Blessed are you…” and “woe are you” verses, their sheer number gives reinforcement to their truth by hearing different applications (or angles) of what Jesus invites his listeners to live. Sometimes there is what seems an uncanny familiarity to actions in our own life. This is sometimes evidence of what is referred to as the truth of the Gospel. When we’ve lived and experienced what we hear it reinforces our understanding of Christian living. Hearing the “blessed” things resonate is a wonderful grace, but sometime we need the jolt of a “woe” to guide us back to the path. Most importantly, the woe can be a graced reminder of how we have forgotten that the manifestation of inattention to Jesus’ call can leave us bereft of the joy that imitating Jesus brings to us. In a somewhat oversimplified way, when our actions lead us toward others as opposed to only what we want or think we need, then we need to remember where the “woe” leads us. Without neglecting to care for ourselves we need to know that Jesus’ call to love has an unlimited number of “angles” which point to others, through the lens of Jesus’ love.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Just when you thought that we were in the midst of an early spring, Mother Nature says “not so fast.” She reminds us that keeping the thermostat as it was when spring was coming saves energy and asks only that we “bundle up” using warm clothing.

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL MSGR. FRAN-CISCO RIOS, VICARIO PARROQUIAL…..

OBRANDO EN LAS ESCRITURAS Por Diácono Rick Haeckel

SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

SAINTS CHAPEL HELP Clean chapel area and put new candles out. Help is needed throughout the day and evening. Small candles need to be changed every four hours. Contact: Ralph Ortega at [email protected].

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith

CANDLE POLICY The lighted candle is a precious gift of our Catholic tradition. At Christmas time, in the past, they were put on Christmas trees, and some today put them in their windows to symbolize Christ as the Light of the World. In our Saints Chapel, we have votive can-dles, which when lit are called vigil lights. People light them to signify they are praying for someone. We have many people who pray before the Blessed Moth-er and the saints in our Chapel. Over the year, we purchase over 6,000 large and 7,000 small candles. I have been asked why we do not allow can-dles purchased in stores. Compare them side by side with store bought candles and you will see the difference. Ours are much sturdier, plus they burn cleaner, and longer, and will not damage our walls and ceiling. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

RECONCILIATION RETREATS

This month, Sacramental Preparation families attend the Reconciliation Re-treats. During the retreat, parents and children reflect on Rules to Live By, espe-cially the Ten Command-

ments and the Beatitudes, the choices we make and Reconciliation, the Sacrament of Healing that re-stores us to God when we make unloving choices. Please pray for the children as they prepare for this special encounter with Jesus and celebrate God’s forgiveness!

LOOKING FOR A JOB? After being employed here at St. Catherine’s for over 11

years (almost three part-time, 8.5 full-time), I am leaving my position. This was not in any way an easy decision to make. This ministry has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. I have grown so much in my faith and as a man because of a “yes” I said over 16 years ago (that “yes” was actu-ally more like a, “fine, I’ll check it out”). I’d like to spend a few moments sharing the reasons for my decision so that crazy rumors don’t start or spread (not that I’m worried about you spreading gossip, but it’s that other person reading this that I’m worried about). A few years ago, my wife asked me what my 5 year plan was (I didn’t even know what my plan was for the next 5 hours). I didn’t have one. I expected to continue to work here at the parish until God led me elsewhere. What I didn’t realize at the time was that God had already been leading me to something new since I first started volunteering in youth ministry back in 2002. God brought these opportunities of volunteering, working part-time, and then working full-time to my door without extra effort on my part, so I (incorrectly) believed that He’d do the same if I was to do something different. Over years of prayer and discernment, I realized that God brought me to this point but what hap-pened beyond that would require my intentional effort. God has been calling me to go beyond our parish to speak to others about Jesus Christ. However, with Beth’s full-time job that requires more of her time than it has in the past, and 3 young children (and another ON THE WAY!), that call from God has mostly gone unanswered. So, in order to follow the path God has invited me to walk on, and to better support my wife in her career, I am stepping down. I’ve agreed to stay up through the last week of March (the 28th), but if the right person to take over the position is found before then, I’ll stop earlier. So although I’ll likely be around for a few more weeks, is that I sincerely believe that there are many people who can serve the youth and young adults of the parish far better than I have been able to. And maybe that person is you, or someone you know, that wouldn’t think or know to apply unless they knew about the position early on. This job not only requires a passion for the young Church, but also the ability to recruit amazing leaders for the various ministries, and coordinating with them. Please pray with me, that the person who is called to take on this ministry will step up. If you feel like you might be called, please take the time to pray and discern. Please start sending emails concerning youth/young adult/confirmation ministries to [email protected] to make sure no communications get lost in the transition.

BLESSED When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of today’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more fa-miliar one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur through-out the prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following his resur-rection in John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The evangelists placed these sayings through-out the Gospels as short reminders about the character-istics that one will find in a follower of Christ, character-istics that will help spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the “blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gospels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our own days a living beatitude! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
