All Saints Day and All Souls

LITURGY SCHEDULE FOR ALL SAINTS DAY Friday, November 1, 2013 8:00 a.m. - church 8:30 a.m. - School 7:00 p.m. - Church All Saint’s Day is always celebrated on November 1st and it is a Holy Day of Obligation in which all Catholics are required to attend Mass. The solemnity of All Saints Day can be traced back to Pope Gregory III (731-741) who consecrated a chapel within St. Peter’s Basilica to all of the saints on November 1st and nearly 100 years later the celebration was shared with the entire Church by Pope Gregory IV (827-844).

Praying for the dead is a spiritual act of mercy, offering special prayers for the dead is a beautiful way to love and honor those who have passed through life before us.

For any one who has lost a family member or close friend

and would like to remember them, you are invited to present a flower in their name.

We will celebrate our All Souls Memorial on Sunday, November 3 with a Mass of Remembrance at 11:00 a.m.

IMPORTANT—please email Susan Daley at [email protected] with your loved one’s name as well as your contact information by Monday, October 28th. By providing information in advance this will insure we have enough flowers and your loved one(s) name is read aloud at Mass.

ALL SOULS NOVENA Our parish All Souls Novena will be the intentions for the daily Masses — October 24 through 26 and October 28 through November 1. If you would like your deceased loved ones included in the parish’s All Souls Novena, please pick up an envelope from the back of the church, list the name(s) of your deceased loved ones in the space provided and turn the Envelope into the parish office or drop it in the collection basket at Mass.

An “at will” donation is appreciated

It is the Holy Spirit that guides the Church in this path.” — Pope Francis, Message for World Mission Sunday 2013

RCIA

In the coming weeks you will be witnessing the Rite of Welcome for those candi-dates who are presently in the RCIA process. “The prayers and ritual gestures acknowledge that such candidates are already part of the community because they have been marked by baptism.” (412 RCIA). The Rite of Welcome also states that they need to receive catechesis, training, and contact with the community of the faithful. Please extend the hand of friendship and companionship to these candidates who seek to know Christ that they feel welcomed as you share your faith with them in this “Year of Faith”. Blessings,

Donna Beam, RCIA Director

Special thanks to Board Members, Susan St. Clair and Kiesha Domanskis, for planning menu, cooking and coordinating all things related to the luncheon; and to Virginia Ather-

OPERATION CHRISTMAS SPIRIT 2013 Please help us bring the Christmas Spirit to the incarcerated men, women, minors, their families and loved ones by donating Christmas cards and stamps. Last year, Catholic Detention Ministry passed out nearly 7,000 Christmas cards with stamped envelopes to inmates and minors incarcerated in the Orange County jails and juvenile facilities. To keep the Spirit alive this year we need more Christmas cards and first class or “Forever” stamps. The cards should reflect our love for Jesus through the cele-bration of his Holy birth. Please mail or bring cards and stamps to: Office of Restorative Justice/Catholic Detention Ministry 1820 W. Orangewood Avenue, #101 Orange, CA 92868

The Parish School Garden Written by Kylie Martin - 4th Grade Student Did you get a chance to see the school garden growing this past summer? We grew 4 big pumpkins that were harvested and now sit by the school office. Come on by and take a look! Mrs. Butler’s 3rd grade class planted the “winter garden” last week. Some of vegetables they planted were broccoli, brussel sprouts, sweet peas, a variety of lettuce, onions, beets, and lots of different herbs. We hope to get a wa-tering system for our garden this year because right now everything is done by hand. Do you want to help with the parish school garden? Stop by the school anytime to find out how.

Firefighters from the local fire department visited our kindergarten and first graders. The presentation outlined a day in the life of a fire-fighter, reviewed fire safety information and gave the students an idea of what firefighters look and sound when suited up in full gear. The students received a fire safety checklist to take home and evaluate how safe their homes are from fire hazards.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
