Due to the pandemic, we are planning some adjustments to Ash Wednesday celebrations.

As directed by the archdiocese due to pandemic restrictions, ash distribution this year will be in the “Roman

style,” sprinkled upon the head from above, rather than tracing a cross on the forehead. The idea is to

minimize contact, and to eliminate the need for the celebrant to speak in close proximity to the recipient of

the ashes. The use of ashes is a tradition with roots in the Old Testament. “I turned to the Lord God, to seek

help, in prayer and petition, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes” (Daniel 9:3).

Sprinkling ashes on the tops of slightly bowed heads, rather than using them to mark foreheads, is not a new

practice; it is the norm in many countries of the world.

Listen to Episode 55 ("The Mighty One

Cures a Leper") on the Sunday Dive pod-

cast with Katie Patrizio and take a clos-

er look at this Sunday's readings. In it we

discuss:

- A literal translation of our scene that unveils Mark's unique

and vivid storytelling style [4:57]

- The Greek roots of the phrase "moved with pity" and the

raw, physiological emotion they assign to Jesus [25:36]

- Some textual perplexities that have led scholars to believe

Jesus also performed an exorcism when he healed the leper
