FOCUS: God’s commandments are written in our hearts. Today we are challenged to love God with our entire being and our neighbor as ourselves. On the face of it, these are difficult commandments to live out day after day, but Moses reminds us that they are written in our hearts. Our task is to listen to God’s word and carry it out at each moment, in each situation we face. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Moses calls on the people to heed the voice of God written in their hearts. The second reading reminds us of Christ Jesus as the image of the invisible God, through whom all things were created and who made peace by the blood of his cross. In the Gospel, Jesus points to the Good Samaritan, with his unselfish works of mercy, as an example of a good neighbor. REFLECTION: As a church we are a "Conspiracy of Goodness." We "breathe together" the breath of God’s Spirit to do good, regardless of peoples’ origins, marital status, race, sexual orientation, or religion. The Spirit breathes in us trying to make the instinct to help others a natural response; as natural as breathing in and breathing out. So we ask ourselves:
Who are the "different people" that need my help and I have been avoiding?
How can I bridge the gap between them and me?
Mission Appeal The second collection next weekend (July 20-21) is for the African missions of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The Brothers through their representative, Brother Michael Migacz, SC, are asking for your prayers and financial sup-port. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart are religious edu-cators who staff schools and other establishments in over thirty countries. Your contributions will especially benefit young men who are preparing to enter religious life. Thank you for your generosity.

The Mass (A Minute in the Church by Gus Lloyd)
The Sunday Sabbath—The Third Commandment says, “Take care to keep holy the Sabbath day as the Lord, your God, commanded you...the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord, your God.” From the beginning the Jewish people have always ob-served Saturday as the Sabbath. So why do Catholics go to church on Sunday? In short, it’s all about Jesus! The Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraph 2174 says this: “Jesus rose from the dead ‘on the first day of the week.’ Be-cause it is the ‘first day,’ the day of Christ’s Resurrec-tion recalls the first creation. Because it is the ‘eighth day’ following the Sabbath, it symbolizes the new crea-tion ushered in by Christ’s Resurrection. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord’s Day.” And in paragraph 2176 the Catechism tells us that “Sunday worship fulfills the moral command of the old Covenant, taking up its rhythm and spirit in the weekly celebration of the Creator and Redeemer of his people.” We see Sunday Mass from the very beginning of the Church. In Acts 20:7, St. Luke recalls, “On the first day of the week when we gathered to break bread…” And finally in paragraph 2177 of the Catechism, we read “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is cel-ebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.”
