Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018

FOCUS: Jesus teaches us to stay connected always to the Father, through whom all good things come.

The image of the vine and the branches is a clear remind-er of our dependence on God for our every breath. If we hope to bear any good fruit in this world, we must stay close to the source of goodness—God himself.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Saul, increasing in strength and fortitude, is preaching the truth that Jesus is the Christ. Barnabas brings him to the Apostles explaining that they need not fear, Saul is in-deed converted. In John’s Letter, he challenges us to love in deed and truth, and reminds us that our hearts are known by the Father. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that he is the vine and the Father is the vine grower. We must abide in him in order to bear good fruit. REFLECTION: When Jesus reminds us to "remain in me," he wants us to "stay in touch" with him. But we know that we don’t have to move away to lose touch. We might continue going to church regularly, but lose touch with Christ when we just go through the motions of religion, without our heart and mind being fully in it. In fact, we are not "remaining" in him; his words don’t nourish and direct us. So we ask ourselves: Has my religious practice become formalistic and

merely habit? What first step should I make to get "back in touch"

with Jesus and a living faith?

Pre-Jordan Class is scheduled for Wednesday, May 2 at 7:30PM in Church. First time parents are re-quired to attend and the Godpar-ents are also welcome. Pre-registration is required by contact-ing the Rectory at 215-725-1240.

Second Collection—Next Weekend The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will be taken up at the second collection the weekend of May 5-6. Thank you for your kind consideration and being as generous as possible.

Letter from Archbishop Chaput Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Here in the U.S. there is a great need for evangelization and sharing the message of Christ and the beauty of the Church. The Church at home needs to be strengthened and fortified. Soon, as a diocese, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA), which supports the neediest diocese in the U.S. This appeal makes the most basic faith programs possible and shares the gospel message with our brothers and sisters in dioceses where Church communities are scattered and strug-gling. The Diocese of Pueblo’s terrain, very mountainous and lonely, has shaped the attitude of pastors and parishioners alike—they tend to be highly independent. This has served them well, since only 44 priests and 45 deacons are available to serve the needs of over 64,000 Catholics. The diocese is primarily rural, cover-ing the entire southern half of the state of Colorado, and the priest shortage is felt very strongly there. But with your support of CHMA, the Diocese of Pueblo offers lay ministry training pro-grams. This training will provide ministers to serve the most isolated parishes and offer spiritual support for Catholics in the diocese. Your support of this appeal makes a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters right here in the U.S. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the appeal this year. Thank you for strengthening the Church at home. Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ, Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

Blue Monday Wear Your Blue on April 30th for BLUE MONDAY! Each year on the last Monday of April, the ENTIRE ARCHDIOCESAN COMMUNITY unites to create a sea of blue to demonstrate our solidarity against child abuse. Everyone, adults and children alike, are encouraged to wear something blue on Blue Mon-day. WHY BLUE? In the Spring of 1989, a grandmother from Virginia began the blue ribbon cam-paign as a tribute to her grandson, a three-year old who died at the hands of his mother’s abusive boy-friend. Since that time, concerned citizens all over the country have worn blue as a symbol of the need to pre-vent child abuse and neglect.
