FEAST OF FAITH The Sign of the Cross At the beginning of our
prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple
and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the
cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ
has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this
sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does
not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of
the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross
echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our
entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is
also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people,
places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine
benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at
the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered
us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living,
and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our

FIESTA DE LA FE Convocados por Dios San Ignacio de Loyola
enfatizaba mucho la necesidad de encon-trar a Dios en todo, no
porque Dios estuviera perdido o ausente, sino porque las personas
no siempre son conscientes de su presencia en ellas o entre ellas.
En la asamblea litúrgica es Dios quien nos convoca a celebrar con
él, con Cristo y por medio de Cristo, la nueva alianza, la Pascua
misma. Los textos posteriores a la resurrección así lo
mani-fiestan, la preferencia del Señor por revelarse a la Iglesia
en asamblea. Curiosamente, somos convocados por Dios y él se hace
presente; no-sotros somos participantes en este encuentro, más no
protagonistas, porque el protagonista es Cristo mismo. No es una
reunión cualquiera o reunión con fines meramente sociales, sino la
reunión de los hom-bres y las mujeres libres que se reúnen a
celebrar la presencia de Cris-to y responden al llamado de Dios. No
somos nosotros los que convo-camos ‘una reunión con Dios’, sino
Dios quien convoca un encuentro-celebración con nosotros. Por ello,
no venimos como individuos aisla-dos, sino como miembros de un solo
cuerpo; no comulgamos para vivir la comunión, sino que comulgamos
porque vivimos la comunión en medio de nuestra gran diversidad.
Somos asamblea convocada, cuerpo vivo y santo que se hará

AN ANCIENT BAPTISTERY
One of the most ancient and enduring sites for bap sm in Rome is
the church of San Giovanni in Fonte. This church is in fact a bap
stery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral
of Rome. The Emperor Constan ne sponsored its construc on in the
year 315, and it is therefore the oldest bap stery in the world. It
is the model for nearly all later bap steries, including per-haps

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
When new sod is put in, it needs constant satura on with water.
Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same
when a branch is gra ed onto a tree: the poul ce that joins them at
the splice must be kept wet at all mes. Water is the stuff that
binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions
throughout all mes and cultures have used it so prominently. When
Jesus stepped into the Jordan for bap sm, he “knit” himself to what
had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one
with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised
Land. With John the Bap st, Christ wove himself into the prophe c
tradi on that
heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in
the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the bap
sm of repentance, Jesus iden fied him-self with our sinful, frail
humanity. It is through the waters of bap sm that Christ con nues
to gra new members
onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed
from sin and filled with the promise of grace,
given our des ny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is
also the waters of bap sm that inaugurate our mission to proclaim

LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe
regarse constantemente. Los jardineros dicen que esto “teje” el
césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede cuando se injerta una rama a un
árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar húmedo en todo momento.
El agua es lo que man ene unidas a las células de nuestro cuerpo.
Con razón las religiones de todas las épocas y culturas han usado
tanto este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser
bau zado, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al sumergirse
en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado
el río para llegar a su Tierra Prome da. Junto a Juan Bau sta,
Cristo se te-jió a la tradición profé ca que presagiaba la venida
del Reino de Dios. Jesús se había conver do plenamente en humano en
las aguas del vientre de María y al par cipar del rito del Bau smo
del arrepen miento, se sin ó iden ficado con nuestra frágil y
pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del Bau smo Cristo con núa
injertando nuevos miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a
nuestro des no de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del
pecado y recibimos la promesa de la gracia. Para nosotros, como
para Jesús, las aguas bau smales también inauguran nuestra mi-sión

Baptism – God wants to live in you
At our bap sm, the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit came to
be at home with us; dwelling within us. A bap zed person is a
temple of God and this is what Chris anity and life are all about –
namely, receiving the grace of the Holy Trinity who desires a rela
onship with us. God is not somewhere far off in the distant, nor is
he simply in our hearts, he is much closer than that – he is next
to each breath and heartbeat, keeping us alive at every moment.
From this point, the human soul in its desire to live, the Holy
Spirit is ac vely transforming us into Jesus Christ, and Jesus who
is one with the Father is turning us to the Father. Are we aware
that nothing happens outside of their oneness of Divine will?
Then, why do the bap zed suffer? Adam and Eve enjoyed the
indwelling of God un l the fall. A er this they could know God was
out there, but he became a thought with the absence of his
presence. Their original sin gave way to more sin, suffering and
death un l the end of me. We live in an imperfect world constantly
under a ack from the devil’s forces.
The good news: the salva on and redemp on of Jesus. At his Bap
sm, the descent of the Holy Spirit and the voice of the Father gave
a Manifesta on that Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah who would
give the 7 Sacraments to the Church. At our bap sm we are given the
first gi of recovery, the healing of original sin, and we are
immersed into the crucifixion, death, and resurrec on of Jesus. The
indwelling of the Trinity gives us wisdom to grow in the knowledge
of their presence. The Eucharis c heart of Jesus shepherds our
sufferings into pathways of peace and inspires many acts of faith
and prayer. Even when we are in desolate moments or depressing
mes.
To summarize keep in mind that you are image of God and even
more by your bap sm, your children of God. You. Amen!

Bautismo – Dios quiere vivir en ti.
En nuestro bau smo, la Trinidad, el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu
Santo vinieron a estar en casa con nosotros; morando dentro de
nosotros. Una persona bau zada es un templo de Dios y de esto se
trata el cris anismo y la vida, es decir, recibir la gracia de la
San sima Trinidad que desea una relación con nosotros. Dios no está
en algún lugar lejano, simplemente está en nuestros corazones, está
mucho más cerca que eso – está al lado de cada aliento y la dos del
corazón, manteniéndonos vivos en cada momento. A par r de este
punto, el alma humana en su deseo de vivir, el Espíritu Santo nos
está transformando en Jesucristo, y Jesús que es uno con el Padre
nos está volviendo al Padre. ¿Somos conscientes de que nada sucede
fuera de su unidad de voluntad divina?
Entonces, ¿por qué sufren los bau zados? Adán y Eva disfrutaron
de la morada de Dios. Después de esto podían saber que Dios estaba
ahí fuera, pero se convir ó en un pensamiento con la ausencia de su
presencia. Su pecado original dio paso a más pecado, sufrimiento y
muerte hasta el fin de los empos. Vivimos en un mundo imperfecto
bajo el ataque de las fuerzas del diablo. La buena no cia: La
salvación y la redención de Jesús. En su bau smo, el descenso del
Espíritu Santo y la voz del Padre dieron una manifestación de que
Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y el Mesías que daría los 7 Sacramentos a
la Iglesia. En nuestro bau smo nos dan el primer don de
recuperación, la curación del pecado original, y estamos inmersos
en la crucifixión, muerte y resurrección de Jesús. La morada de la
Trinidad nos da sabiduría para crecer en el conocimiento de su
presencia. El corazón Eucarís co de Jesús pastorea nuestros
sufrimientos en caminos de paz e inspira muchos actos de fe y
oración. Incluso cuando estamos en momentos desolados o empos
deprimentes. Para resumir recuerda que eres imagen y semajanza de
Dios y aun más por el bau zo eres hija e hijo de Dios. ¡Amén!

APOSTOLIC LETTER: PATRIS CORDE OF THE HOLY FATHERFRANCIS ON THE
150th ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROCLAMATION OF SAINT JOSEPHAS PATRON OF
THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH
WITH A FATHER’S HEART: that is how Joseph loved Jesus, whom all
four Gospels refer to as “the son of Joseph”.[1] Matthew and Luke,
the two Evangelists who speak most of Joseph, tell us very little,
yet enough for us to
appreciate what sort of father he was, and the mission entrusted
to him by God’s providence. We know that Joseph was a lowly
carpenter (cf. Mt 13:55), betrothed to Mary (cf. Mt 1:18; Lk 1:27).
He was a “just man” (Mt1:19), ever ready to carry out God’s will as
revealed to him in the Law (cf. Lk 2:22.27.39) and through four
dreams (cf. Mt 1:20; 2:13.19.22). After a long and tiring journey
from Nazareth to Bethlehem, he beheld the birth of the Messiah in a
stable, since “there was no place for them” elsewhere (cf. Lk 2:7).
He witnessed the adoration of the shepherds (cf. Lk 2:8-20) and the
Magi (cf. Mt 2:1-12), who represented respectively the people of
Israel and the pagan peoples. Joseph had the courage to become the
legal father of Jesus, to whom he gave the name re-vealed by the
angel: “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people
from their sins” (Mt 1:21). As we know, for ancient peoples, to
give a name to a person or to a thing, as Adam did in the account
in the Book of Genesis (cf. 2:19-20), was to establish a
relationship.
In the Temple, forty days after Jesus’ birth, Joseph and Mary
offered their child to the Lord and listened with amazement to
Simeon’s prophecy concerning Jesus and his Mother (cf. Lk 2:22-35).
To protect Jesus from Herod, Joseph dwelt as a foreigner in Egypt
(cf. Mt 2:13-18). After returning to his own country, he led a
hidden life in the tiny and obscure village of Nazareth in Galilee,
far from Bethlehem, his ancestral town, and from Jerusalem and the
Temple. Of Nazareth it was said, “No prophet is to rise” (cf. Jn
7:52) and indeed, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (cf. Jn
1:46). When, during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Joseph and Mary lost
track of the twelve-year-old Jesus, they anxiously sought him out
and they found him in the Temple, in discussion with the doctors of
the Law (cf. Lk 2:41-50). After Mary, the Mother of God, no saint
is mentioned more frequently in the papal magisterium than Joseph,
her spouse. My Predecessors reflected on the message contained in
the limited information handed down by the Gos-pels in order to
appreciate more fully his central role in the history of salvation.
Blessed Pius IX declared him “Patron of the Catholic Church”,[2]
Venerable Pius XII proposed him as “Patron of Workers”[3] and Saint
John Paul II as “Guardian of the Redeemer”.[4] Saint Joseph is
universally invoked as the “patron of a happy death”.[5] Now, one
hundred and fifty years after his proclamation as Patron of the
Catholic Church by Blessed Pius IX (8 December 1870), I would like
to share some personal reflections on this extraordinary figure, so
close to our own human experience. For, as Jesus says, “out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Mt 12:34). My de-sire to
do so increased during these months of pandemic, when we
experienced, amid the crisis, how “our lives are woven together and
sustained by ordinary people, people often overlooked. People who
do not appear in newspaper and magazine headlines, or on the latest
television show, yet in these very days are surely shaping the
decisive events of our history. Doctors, nurses, storekeepers and
supermarket workers, cleaning personnel, care-givers, transport
workers, men and women working to provide essential services and
public safety, volunteers, priests, men and women religious, and so
very many others. They understood that no one is saved alone… How
many people daily exercise patience and offer hope, taking care to
spread not panic, but shared responsibility. How many fathers,
mothers, grandparents and teachers are showing our children, in
small everyday ways, how to accept and deal with a crisis by
adjusting their routines, looking ahead and encouraging the
practice of prayer. How many are praying, making sacrifices and
interceding for the good of all”.[6] Each of us can discover in
Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden
presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of
trouble. Saint Joseph reminds us that those who appear hidden or in
the shadows can play an incompara-ble role in the history of
salvation. A word of recognition and of gratitude is due to them
all.

CON MOTIVO DEL 150.° ANIVERSARIO DE LA DECLARACIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ
COMO PATRONO DE LA IGLESIA UNIVERSAL Con corazón de padre: así José
amó a Jesús, llamado en los cuatro Evangelios «el hijo de José»[1].
Los dos evangelistas que evidenciaron su figura, Mateo y Lucas,
refieren poco, pero lo suficiente para entender qué tipo de padre
fuese y la misión que la Providencia le confió. Sabemos que fue un
humilde carpintero (cf. Mt 13,55), desposado con María (cf. Mt
1,18; Lc 1,27); un «hombre justo» (Mt1,19), siempre dispuesto a
hacer la voluntad de Dios manifestada en su ley (cf. Lc 2,22.27.39)
y a través de los cuatro sueños que tuvo (cf. Mt 1,20; 2,13.19.22).
Después de un largo y
duro viaje de Nazaret a Belén, vio nacer al Mesías en un
pesebre, porque en otro sitio «no había lugar para ellos» (Lc 2,7).
Fue testigo de la adoración de los pastores (cf. Lc 2,8-20) y de
los Magos (cf. Mt 2,1-12), que representaban respectivamente el
pueblo de Israel y los pueblos paganos. Tuvo la valentía de asumir
la paternidad legal de Jesús, a quien dio el nombre que le reveló
el ángel: «Tú le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque él salvará a su
pueblo de sus pe-cados» (Mt 1,21). Como se sabe, en los pueblos
antiguos poner un nombre a una persona o a una cosa significaba
adquirir la pertenencia, como hizo Adán en el relato del Génesis
(cf. 2,19-20).
En el templo, cuarenta días después del nacimiento, José, junto
a la madre, presentó el Niño al Señor y escu-chó sorprendido la
profecía que Simeón pronunció sobre Jesús y María (cf. Lc 2,22-35).
Para proteger a Jesús de Herodes, permaneció en Egipto como
extranjero (cf. Mt 2,13-18). De regreso en su tierra, vivió de
manera oculta en el pequeño y desconocido pueblo de Nazaret, en
Galilea —de donde, se decía: “No sale ningún pro-feta” y “no puede
salir nada bueno” (cf. Jn 7,52; 1,46)—, lejos de Belén, su ciudad
de origen, y de Jerusalén, donde estaba el templo. Cuando, durante
una peregrinación a Jerusalén, perdieron a Jesús, que tenía doce
años, él y María lo buscaron angustiados y lo encontraron en el
templo mientras discutía con los doctores de la ley (cf. Lc
2,41-50). Después de María, Madre de Dios, ningún santo ocupa tanto
espacio en el Magisterio pontificio como José, su esposo. Mis
predecesores han profundizado en el mensaje contenido en los pocos
datos transmitidos por los Evangelios para destacar su papel
central en la historia de la salvación: el beato Pío IX lo declaró
«Patrono de la Iglesia Católica»[2], el venerable Pío XII lo
presentó como “Patrono de los trabajadores”[3] y san Juan Pablo II
como «Custodio del Redentor»[4]. El pueblo lo invoca como «Patrono
de la buena muerte»[5]. Por eso, al cumplirse ciento cincuenta años
de que el beato Pío IX, el 8 de diciembre de 1870, lo declarara
co-mo Patrono de la Iglesia Católica, quisiera —como dice Jesús—
que “la boca hable de aquello de lo que está lleno el corazón” (cf.
Mt 12,34), para compartir con ustedes algunas reflexiones
personales sobre esta figura extraordinaria, tan cercana a nuestra
condición humana. Este deseo ha crecido durante estos meses de
pande-mia, en los que podemos experimentar, en medio de la crisis
que nos está golpeando, que «nuestras vidas es-tán tejidas y
sostenidas por personas comunes —corrientemente olvidadas— que no
aparecen en portadas de diarios y de revistas, ni en las grandes
pasarelas del último show pero, sin lugar a dudas, están
escribiendo hoy los acontecimientos decisivos de nuestra historia:
médicos, enfermeros y enfermeras, encargados de reponer los
productos en los supermercados, limpiadoras, cuidadoras,
transportistas, fuerzas de seguridad, voluntarios, sacerdotes,
religiosas y tantos pero tantos otros que comprendieron que nadie
se salva solo. […] Cuánta gente cada día demuestra paciencia e
infunde esperanza, cuidándose de no sembrar pánico sino
corresponsabilidad. Cuántos padres, madres, abuelos y abuelas,
docentes muestran a nuestros niños, con gestos pequeños y
coti-dianos, cómo enfrentar y transitar una crisis readaptando
rutinas, levantando miradas e impulsando la oración. Cuántas
personas rezan, ofrecen e interceden por el bien de todos»[6].
Todos pueden encontrar en san José —el hombre que pasa
desapercibido, el hombre de la presencia diaria, discreta y oculta—
un intercesor, un apoyo y una guía en tiempos de dificultad. San
José nos recuerda que todos los que están aparentemente ocultos o
en “segunda línea” tienen un protagonismo sin igual en la historia
de la salvación. A todos ellos va dirigida una palabra de
